1 Herald Citizen November 25, 1943 Funeral services were held today at Denny s Seminary for John Bell Denny, 81, who died at his home Tuesday morning of a heart attack. Rev. J. A. Harris was in charge. Burial was in the Smellage Cemetery, Boma, TN. He was a member of the Methodist Church at Denny s Seminary. He was the last member of the family of the late Jonathan Denny, and was a brother of the late Judge T.L. Denny and Silas Denny of Cookeville. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Eliza Barnes Denny, and several nieces and nephews. Herald Citizen October 27, 1949 Mrs. J. B. Denny, 82 Funeral services were held Wednesday morning for Mrs. John Bell Denny, (Eliza Jane Barnes Denny) 82, at Denny s Seminary. Interment was in Smellage Cemetery. Mrs. Denny died at her home in the Buffalo Valley community Sunday evening after a long illness. She was a loyal member of the Methodist Church. She was noted for her hospitality, kindness, and humility. She had no children of her own but reared Ethel (Man) L. Jared and Charles Johnson a nephew of her husband. (Robert & Doris (Gillem) Shanks live there today, in 2000.) 2 Herald Citizen Services were held this week for Grover Anderson, 81, a prominent resident who helped save Tennessee Tech in one of its darkest days. A native, Anderson was a merchant in Baxter who served terms on the Putnam School Board and who for 40 years was a trustee at Baxter Seminary. He was serving as Putnam s state representative in 1929 when years of resentment against higher education and the stock market crash that led to the Depression threatened to dry up state dollars for the state college in Cookeville. That year, Anderson campaigned for $1 million in state funding for Tennessee Tech for its annual budget. He got $250,000. He attributed much of the shortcoming to competition from other state colleges in Tennessee that are scrambling for state support. 4 Herald Citizen October 29, 2000 Denny s celebrate 50 years Harold and Lois Guess Denny, at left, formerly of Cookeville, celebrated their 50 th wedding anniversary at the Holly Tree Country Club in Tyler, Texas, on October 20 with a dinner hosted by their daughter, Brenda Cox, her husband Mark, and their children, April and Casey Cox. Several friends from their home in Shreveport, LA, joined them to celebrate with the couple, who were married October 27, 1950, in Baxter. Mrs. Cox pointed out to the group that her parents married while her father was in service and that there was no time or money from an Army private s pay for a wedding trip then. So a South American cruise was arranged for them in celebration of 50 years of marriage and service to their adopted community. At right is the couple around the time of their wedding. Pastor Ron McConnell of Murfreesboro officiated. The bride was escorted by both of her parents to the song I Knew I Loved You. She wore an A-line white halter dress with a sweep train. The bustline and train were accented with lace, pearls and sequins. She completed the ensemble with elbowlength lace gloves, a tiara of white roses and knee-length veil. She carried a bouquet of yellow roses. The matron of honor, Melissa Downey Wolford of Cleveland, wore a black, anklelength, sleeveless gown with black elbow-length gloves. The groom wore a black suit with a gold tie accented with a yellow rose boutonniere. The best man was the groom s brother, Dr. Bunker Stout of Cookeville. The bride is the granddaughter of Elizabeth Whitehead of Buffalo Valley and the late Oscar Moss and Nick and Ruby Christian. The groom is the grandson of the late Tamer and Clara Nell Denny, Velma Stout Hughes and Hargis Stout. Patrick was the s/o Elton Stout & Dorothy Nell Denny. 5 Floyd Huddleston Herald Citizen October 8, 1980 Buffalo Valley Graveside services for Floyd Huddleston, 81, will be conducted Thursday, October 9, 1980, at 9:30 a.m. at Crest Lawn Cemetery, with Rev. Robert H. Case officiating. Mr. Huddleston died Tuesday night in the VA Hospital in Murfreesboro following a long illness. He was a native of Buffalo Valley, the son of the late Henry and Lucinda Tennessee Sexton Huddleston. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Richard Pinkham, Nashville. His body will lie in state at the Hooper & Huddleston Baxter Chapel after 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Hooper & Huddleston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
