2 WHAT IS CULTURE TRACK? Culture Track is the largest national tracking study focused exclusively on the ever-changing attitudes and behaviors of U.S. cultural consumers. Developed by LaPlaca Cohen and fielded six times since 2001, Culture Track is the product of over a decade of research and dedication to producing a current, highly-actionable resource for the leading cultural organizations across the nation. 4 CULTURE TRACK 2014 PRESENTATION ARTHUR COHEN Chief Executive Officer, LaPlaca Cohen As Chief Executive Officer of LaPlaca Cohen, Arthur Cohen consults with major arts organizations throughout the world, working with staff, Board members, and funders on communications and strategic planning issues. To ensure that clients always have access to the latest best-practice examples and cutting-edge research from around the globe, Arthur leads Culture Track, he lectures internationally, and he is also an Adjunct Professor at New York University, where he teaches a course he created in Cultural Branding. Arthur is a graduate of Harvard Business School and the University of Pennsylvania. Arthur is the Vice Chairman of the Smithsonian Archives of American Art, and a Board member of: the Architectural League of New York; The University of Pennsylvania/Institute of Contemporary Art; and the Provincetown Art Association and Museum. He also serves on the Executive Board of the Modern and Contemporary Collections Committee of the Harvard University Art Museums, and the Visiting Committee of the Center for Experimental Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He lives in New York City and Cape Cod. PANEL DISCUSSION JOHANNA BLAKLEY, Moderator Director of Research, Norman Lear Center, USC Johanna Blakley is the managing director and director of research at the Norman Lear Center, a research and public policy institute based at the University of Southern California s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. Blakley performs research on a wide variety of topics, including entertainment education, cultural diplomacy, and the impact of digital media and intellectual property law on the creative industries. Blakley has held a variety of positions within the high-tech industry and she received a PhD in English from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She has two talks on TED.com and she speaks frequently in the U.S. and abroad about her research.

5 RENAE WILLIAMS NILES Vice President, Programming, The Music Center Renae Williams Niles is the Vice President of Programming for The Music Center in Los Angeles, one of the three largest performing arts centers in the US. She oversees all programming including the dance series, family programming and a model multidisciplinary art-making program. Prior to joining The Music Center, she was Director of Grant Programs for the L.A. County Arts Commission. She has worked with the Lula Washington Dance Theatre as Company Manager and with Grand Performances at California Plaza as Marketing/Special Projects Manager. Renae has been a panelist for the Entertainment Industry Foundation, the Irvine Foundation/Dance/USA, the National Endowment for the Arts, United States Artists, the California Arts Council, and many local/regional arts agencies. She currently serves as President of the Board of Directors for the Western Arts Alliance and was recently on the Board of Trustees for Dance/USA. She was also a founding member of the board for the Culver City Cultural Affairs Foundation. She is an active member of the Association of Performing Arts Presenters and attended by invitation, the 2003 and 2006 National Dance Presenters Leadership Forum at Jacob s Pillow. Renae holds a BA in Public Relations from the University of Southern California and resides in Culver City, California. ANN PHILBIN Director, Hammer Museum Under Ann Philbin s leadership, the Hammer Museum has developed an international reputation for thematic contemporary exhibitions and scholarly historical exhibitions. Philbin also created a roster of dynamic public programs that regularly feature many of the most provocative and creative thinkers of our time. In the position since 1999, she founded the museum s Hammer Contemporary Collection as well as the Hammer Projects series focused on emerging artists. Under her direction the Hammer has mounted more than 100 exhibitions and installations many of which have traveled nationally and internationally and she has also overseen substantial building renovations. In 2012 the Hammer inaugurated Made in L.A., a series of biennial exhibitions focused on emerging and overlooked artists from the Los Angeles region. Prior to her tenure at the Hammer, Philbin was director of The Drawing Center in New York for 10 years where she curated and organized historical and contemporary exhibitions of works on paper.

6 JOSÉ LUIS VALENZUELA Director of Theater & Film; Professor, UCLA School of Theater, Film & Television José Luis Valenzuela (Artistic Director, LATC) is an award winning theater/film director and Head of the MFA Directing program at the UCLA School of Theater, Film & Television. For over 28 years he has directed critically acclaimed productions at major regional theaters including the Los Angeles Theatre Center where he created the Latino Theatre Lab in 1985 and the Mark Taper Forum where he established the Latino Theater Initiative. He most recently directed Premeditation by Evelina Fernández at The LATC, and Henrik Ibsen s Peer Gynt at the Ibsen Theater of Norway. Other LATC credits include: Melancholia by The Latino Theater Lab, Faith, Hope and Charity by Evelina Fernández, La Victima by El Teatro de La Esperanza, and La Virgen de Guadalupe, Dios Inantzin, an annual holiday pageant at Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral. Mr. Valenzuela is the recipient of the Ann C. Rosenfield Distinguished Community Partnership Prize and the Hispanic Heritage Month Local Hero of the Year Award. PHILIPPE VERGNE Director, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles Philippe Vergne was appointed director of The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA) in March Prior to joining MOCA, Vergne served for five years as director of the Dia Art Foundation, New York where he built an international reputation as a successful and committed museum leader with a deep knowledge of contemporary art. Prior to leading the Dia Foundation, Vergne held leadership roles as Deputy Director and Chief Curator at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, where he worked for over a decade organizing more than 25 international exhibitions and the Herzog & de Meuron facility expansion; as Director of the Francois Pinault Foundation in Paris; and Director of the Musée d art Contemporain (MAC) in Marseille, France. Vergne was awarded the Légion d honneur in recognition of his 24 years of service to the arts in April Vergne was also named chevalier de l ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government in 2004.

Prior to joining this firm, he was for 11 years a lead analyst for the Russ Reid Company, a direct response fundraising consultancy.
