With winter past and the days getting longer I cherish each spring day and look forward to summer when there is time to golf, fish, hang at the beach, or just relax. But this spring also signals the end of my year as chapter president. A new slate of officers will be installed in June at our annual meeting and the gavel will be passed on to a new President and a new Board of Directors. Fortunately most of this year s Board will be returning so the same talented team will be in place to continue providing quality programs and events. Chapter highlights this past year included raising twenty-two thousand dollars at the golf tournament for CM student scholarships, and a record attendance at the awards banquet in April where Jeff Gouveia, formerly of Suffolk Construction, was recognized as Person of the Year and Scott Brown was the keynote speaker. A portion of the luncheon proceeds along with Board member contributions resulted in a $2,600 contribution to the One Fund Boston. We also saw record attendance at the Owner s Forum luncheon in March which was conducted jointly with SAME. Finally, our monthly breakfast programs were excellent and once again our chapter sponsored the Professional Construction Management course at Wentworth Institute, which facilitates individuals to achieve CCM, Certified Construction Manager, accreditation. Our chapter has grown to 411 members and continues to grow at over 10% per year! This is a real acknowledgement both of the value CMAA brings to our profession and the leadership and achievements of our Board, committee members, and active membership. Going forward, greater involvement by chapter members, including younger professionals, is the key for our chapter to improve and expand programs and events. CMAA and the New England Chapter provide great opportunities for networking and honing leadership skills while shaping the future of our profession. Despite my busy work schedule I ve enjoyed serving as chapter president, working with a talented Board, keeping abreast of industry trends and meeting new and talented people. Thanks for giving me this opportunity. Steve Marshall PE, CCM.
2 PAGE 2 EMPLOYEE NEWSLETTER Committee News The IHNC Surge Barrier Project provides 100-year storm protection to New Orleans and is the largest design build civil works project ever accomplished by the US Army Corps of Engineers The Technical Committee, under Steve Farrell and Jim Driscoll, are looking for volunteers for CMAA NE Mentoring as well as speakers for a Brown Bag Luncheon Series. Contact Steve at sfarrell@farrellconsultinggroup.com. Jim can be reached at jdriscoll@gilbaneco.com. The Programs Committee capped this year s stimulating breakfast program with a presentation by Gerald R. Doton, PE, Deputy Director of Engineering at Shaw E&I, a CB&I Group Company on the New Orleans Inner Harbor Navigational Canal/Hurricane Storm Damage Risk Reduction System, which achieved the Engineering News Record 2011 Best of the Best Civil Works/Infrastructure Category Award. Planning is starting for the September 2013-May 2014 series; ddoane@massport.com for any ideas or issues you would like addressed in the next series. Newsflashes: PCM Course Requests for CCM s have become more prevalent in Request for Qualifications... CMAA NE once again hosted a Professional Construction Management Course on March at Wentworth institute of technology in Boston MA. The workshop was well received, attracting participants from around the country including Texas, California and Maine. The course was led by a multi-disciplinary team of instructors with various backgrounds including Architects, Engineers, Lawyers and Construction Managers. Diversity within the student population created an integrated learning opportunity for both instructor and students resulting in a mutually beneficial and stimulating experience. As the CCM recognition and value increases within the construction industry the demand for Certification is growing among developers and public and private institutions. Requests for CCM s have become more prevalent in Request for Qualifications documents issued for the procurement process. This recent change is clear indication that experienced, trained & Certified Construction Managers (CCM) are considered leaders and added value to any program. CMAA NE Plans to host its next PCM course in spring Contact Greg Janey at greg@janeyco.com
3 Awards and Scholarships The 19 th Annual Achievement Awards Banquet was held on April 23, 2013 with former Senator Scott Brown as the featured speaker. 15 awards were presented including a Program Management Award to PMA for their work on a $340 million program improvement and expansion at UMass Medical Campus in Worcester, MA. Former Senator Brown, currently working with the law firm of Nixon Peabody LLP, addressed the political climate in Washington, DC as business and governmental policies relate to the industry. Scott Brown addresses an attentive audience of over 200 participants Jeffrey A Gouveia, Jr., most recently the Executive Vice President and General Manager for Suffolk Construction Company, Inc., received the 2013 Person of the Year Award. Jeff Gouveia is congratulated by CMAA-NE President Steve Marshall, PE, CCM As part of the Awards program, successful scholarship applicants were recognized. Of the 26 applications received, 11 scholarships totaling $22,000 were awarded, and two applications, that of Haylee Bacik of Wentworth and Kledio Baci of Northeastern, forwarded to the CMAA Foundation for further scholarship consideration scholarship winners
4 PAGE 4 EMPLOYEE NEWSLETTER Golf Tournament With the New England Chapter's Golf Committee outreach to a myriad of consultants, contractors, agencies, and to the CMAA membership, the 17 th annual event was once again held at the Brook Meadow Country Club in Canton, MA, on Wednesday, May 22. Besides being central location to our industries constituents, the Country Club continues to be incredibly helpful to our events held there. Special thanks to our student volunteers As of the first week in May, the Golf Outing was fully booked with 31 full Sponsors, 1 Sponsor w/o Golf, and 20 Individual Players, for a total of 144 players. A crew of over 20 dedicated individuals assisted at the Outing including a combination of CM students and Scholarship Recipients from Roger Williams, Northeastern, University of Southern Maine, and Wentworth Institute. These Recipients were acknowledged and presented their Scholarships at the Clubhouse at the end of the last round. Since the majority of the total costs of the scholarships are funded by the Golf Outing, we once again take off our hats to and thank the Sponsors and Individuals that participate. Changing (or not) of the Guard Recent elections for the CMAA-NE Board resulted in the following results: New Board members take up duties starting with the CMAA- NE Annual Meeting on June 20, Look for invitations to participate in next year s committee work.
