Canada Day Regatta on July 1, 2003 On July 1, 2003, a flotilla of pleasure boats will gather at Aberdeen and set sail for Lamma Island for a seafood lunch. The participants will be provided with red or white polo shirts and the boats will be decorated with Canadian flags. You are cordially invited to join to celebrate Canada Day and if you have a boat, you are welcome to join with your boat as well. 2. 2 Who am I An Expatriate or a Returnee? Some time in May, I ran into Allan McLeod, Head of CDNIS and James Mistruzzi, Principal of Japanese International School at Aberdeen Boat Club. During our conversations, I mentioned CCA s intention to establish the post of Director for Expatriate Affairs and the fact that I was (and still am) looking for a suitable candidate for it. The idea was to have someone to deal with expatriates and handle their related affairs. Then the issue of who should be considered as an expatriate was raised. I found it intriguing as, apparently, Allan seemed to be of the view that I should consider myself (or words to that effect) an expatriate as well. I am a person who was educated and raised in Hong Kong, went to Canada to continue my tertiary education and returned to Hong Kong after obtaining my two degrees from UBC and my Canadian citizenship status. It is intriguing, at least to me, to be classified as an expatriate in such circumstances as it has never dawned on me in all these years that I should be considered as such. One dictionary defines Expatriate as a person living outside his own country. Hong Kong was my home before I left for Canada and the place which I returned to live after spending eleven odd years in Canada. As I am now living in my home country, it seems that I should be considered as a returnee but not an expatriate in the true sense and meaning of the word. For more information, visit the Chamber website at: Certainly, any Canadians who came to work in Hong Kong and do not hold a permanent Hong Kong Identity Card should rightly be considered as an expatriate and I venture to say, even amongst those who have obtained a permanent Hong Kong Identity Card, are still expatriates if they were originally having Canada as their home country. After the analysis, I am happy to report that in the context of the Hong Kong situation, I am not an expatriate but an returnee and my original idea of establishing a post of Director for Expatriate Affairs is proper and appropriate to extend CCA s services and coverage to include the expatriates.. 3 Introduction of our new Executive Committee Members Year 2003 to 2004 We wish to take this opportunity to introduce to you members of our Executive Committee : Chairman Spencer Lee Spencer was a founding member of Chinese Canadian Association of Hong Kong ( CCA ), Canadian International School of Hong Kong ( CDNIS ), UBC Alumni Association of Hong Kong, Yee Hong Community Wellness Foundation of Hong Kong Limited. He co-founded CCA in 1987 and was Chairman of CCA in the year and is this year s Chairman and Chief Editor of CCA s Newsletter. He is a graduate of UBC with degrees in B.Sc. (1 st class Hons.) and LL.B. He is currently an Ex-officio Governor of CDNIS representing the Members of its Foundation and sits as a member of its Chinese Studies Subcommittee. He is a solicitor and a Notary Public and has been operating his own firm under the name of Spencer Lee & Co. since Vice Chairman (General Affairs) Wilson Wong Wilson is an Assistant Director at Hang Lung Properties Limited, a major property developer in Hong Kong and Shanghai, responsible for the sales and marketing of Hang Lung s property development projects. Mr. Wong was trained as a pharmacist and a graduate of UBC. He is a Founding Member, Governor and past President of the UBC Alumni Association in Hong Kong and was twice recognized by UBC for his dedication and contribution. Mr. Wong serves as a Governor and a member of the Finance and Administration Committee at CDNIS. He is also a Vice-Chairman of CCA, a member of the Legal Sub-Committee of the Real Estate Developers Association of Hong Kong, and a Fellow Member of the Hong Kong Institute of Real Estate Administration. Vice Chairman for External Affairs Michael Ma Michael has extensive experience and expertise in the Information Technology field for many years both in Canada and Asia. Michael is currently an executive member of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and cochair its IT Committee, and a member of the Canadian Club, Hong Kong Computer Society, Canadian Information Processing Society, and Hong Kong Management Association. At CDNIS, he is currently a Governor, Chairman of the Scholarship & Debenture Committee, and a member of the IT Committee. He has previously held the portfolios of Chairman of the Premises Committee and Chairman of the Parents Teachers Liaison Committee. At CCA, he is the Vice Chairman responsible for external affairs and liaising with the Chamber, Canadian Club, CDNIS, the Canadian Consulate, and other external parties. Michael holds a degree in Computer Science from UBC, in addition to having professional designations as a Certified Computing Professional and Information Systems Professional of Canada. Vice Chairman (Membership) Yu Tat Kong, Peter Peter is the Director & Group General Manager of The Miramar Group. Miramar is a publicly-listed company with main business activities which include Hotel ownership and operation; Tourism; Food & Beverage operation and Real Estates development. Before joining The Miramar Group, Peter was the President and Chief Executive Officer with Richfield Hospitality Services, Inc. in U.S.A. Richfield was the largest independent hotel management company in the U.S. and operated about 150 hotels throughout the country. Peter has more than 25 years of international experience in diverse industries in Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Canada and U.S. He has been active in the hospitality industry in the U.S. prior to his returning to Hong Kong in Mr. Yu was on the Board of Trustee with the Education Institute and a Board of Regent at the President Academy under the American Hotel & Motel Association. He also sat on the Industrial Real Estate Finance Advisory Committee (IREFAC) for 2 years with the Association. Peter holds a bachelor s degree in Statistic and Computer Science from the University of Manitoba, a master s degree in Business Administration from UBC and is a Canadian Chartered Accountant and U.S. Certified Hotel Administrator. Currently, he is a member of the Advisory Committee on Hotel & Tourism Management of The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

4 Vice-Chairman (Functions) Bill Ling Bill is a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University in USA with a degree of B.A. in Economics and Mathematics and an MBA from The American Graduate School of International Management. Bill started his advertising career in 1974 with McCann Erickson Advertising Agency (A top Ten Advertising Agency in the World). In 1984 he took over the family-run advertising agency, The China Commercial Advertising Agency, which was founded by Bill s grandfather in Shanghai, China in He was a past President of the International Advertising Association HK Chapter and a founding member of the Hong Kong Independent Advertising Agency Association. He was also a founding member of the Alumni Association (Hong Kong Chapter) for the American Graduate School of International Management and was on the School s Asian Board members from 1998 to Bill is also an active members of The Lions Club participating in many community charitable projects both in Hong Kong and China, the most recent one was to build a threestoreyed school for a remote village in the hills of YingDa, in the Qingyuan District of Guangzhou Province. He is also a member of the Youth Outreach and Drug Awareness (YODAC) sub-committee promoting anti-drug usage message to the youth of Hong Kong. 2 nd Vice-Chairman (Functions) Tony Lit Tony is a businessman and the Chairman of Wing Tung Yuh International Co. Ltd. (Food Products) and Easy Jumbo Limited (Property Holding). He is also the Executive President of Easy Lead International Ltd. (Textile) and Tung Yuh Trading Development Co. Ltd. (Textile). 3 rd Vice Chairman for Functions Pam Mak Pam received her Bachelor of Business Administration degree from York University and owns her own wine business under the name Sinolink Fine Wines Ltd. and also runs her family business in transportation under the name Chun Shing Logistics Co. Ltd. She is active in community services and is at present the President ( ) of the Lions Club of Tuen Mun. Vice Chairman (Sports and Recreations) Sandy Law Sandy was educated in the U.K. with a B.Sc. degree in Mathematical Science and a postgraduate diploma in Management Studies from Hong Kong Management Association and Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She was previously a Sales and Marketing director in firms in Canada and Hong Kong before switching to become an investment consultant and now runs her own firm by the name of Elite Financial Services Ltd. in her capacity as director and registered investment advisor. She is keen in sports especially golf and badminton and is the key organizer of our golf expeditions. Honorary Treasurer Benthony Ip Ben is a graduate of University of London in 1981 with a degree in Mathematics. He is a Chartered Accountant and a member of Hong Kong Society of Accountants with 20 odd years of experience in Accounting, Corporate Finance and Management, from working for a large international firm of accountants and as Chief Financial Officer and Finance Director of groups with interests in consumer electronics, real estate construction, investment and development in Hong Kong, U.S.A. and Australia. Ben is the principal of his own financial consultancy firm, Vice President and Regional Treasurer of Hong Kong Scout Association and a member of its Regional Executive Committee. In addition, Ben is also a Founding Director and Treasurer of Hong Kong Federation of Restaurants and Related Trades. He is a Treasurer of Hong Kong Biotechnology Association and has been advising the financial aspects of a number of Biotechnology projects since 1998 and currently the financial advisor to a group of publicly-listed companies. Honorary Secretary Jamie Sih Jamie is a graduate of University of Toronto and has been in the banking industry since She is this year s Honorary Secretary.

5 Director for China Affairs Richard C.K. Wong Richard C.K. Wong, BA, FICB, is currently the Chief Executive of Regency Investments & Management Company Ltd., an international direct investments and corporate finance company with extensive investment experience in China. Richard completed his tertiary education at Jordanhill College of Education, Glasgow, U.K. with full sponsorship by the Hong Kong Government and at York University, Canada and is a Fellow of the Institute of Canadian Bankers. Richard is the Founding Chairman of CDNIS, a Director of the Hong Kong Chinese General Chamber of Commerce and a Committee Member of the Hong Kong Pei Hua Education Fund (A charitable Fund established to help train senior Chinese government officials). He was appointed Honorary Consul of the Republic of Tunisia in Hong Kong on May, Director of Communications Francis Yau Francis is a director for Auction and Valuation Services in Greater China of Dovebid Inc., a world leading plant and machinery appraiser and auctioneer. He had previously attended high school and the University of Regina in Canada before returning to work in Hong Kong. Director for Website Herbert Lee Herbert is a graduate of University of Western Ontario and UBC and was trained as a civil engineer. He previously involved in real estate development and construction in his family business and is now the Managing Director of Herbertini Ltd. & Quantum Cybertech Ltd. which relate jewellery and high-tech businesses. Member at Large Simon Wong Simon Wong returned to Hong Kong in 1981 after spending 12 years in North America. He is a graduate of University of Minnesota, USA with B.A. degrees in Psychology and Studio Arts. Since 1993, he is the Chairman of Kampery Group, major brands of the Group are Dai Pai Dong, Coffee Chateau, Greendotdot, Organic Garden, Mocaroma and Golden Phoenix etc. Simon is very active in public affairs, amongst them, he is a Board Member of Licensing Appeals Board and the V.M.O. Marketing Advisory Board. He is also the Chairman of Committee Chest Greening for the Chest Organizing Committee and a Member of Community Chest Campaign Committee, Chairman of Hong Kong Federation of Restaurants and Related Trades, Vice Chairman of the Association for Hong Kong Catering Services Management Ltd., Honorary Vice Chairman of Hong Kong Girl Guides Association, Adjunct Professor of Faculty of Business/City University of Hong Kong, Member of The University of Hong Kong Foundation for Educational Development & Research, Chairman of Yee Hong Community Wellness Foundation of Hong Kong Ltd., Governor of Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care, Yee Hong Community Wellness Foundation/Canada. Ignatius Chong Iggy is an Executive Vice-President at Coutts Bank, Hong Kong Branch and is Deputy to the Head of Private Banking. He was born in Singapore and emigrated to Vancouver in He graduated in 1982 from UBC with a B. Comm. degree in Finance. He began his banking career after graduation and served in varied managerial roles with the Royal Bank of Canada in Vancouver and Hong Kong for twelve years, before joining Coutts in He obtained his Fellowship of the Institute of Canadian Bankers (FICB) in 1986 and his Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in He was a former President of the UBC Alumni Association in Hong Kong (from 1994 to 1996) and the co-chair of the Finance and Legal Committee of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce from 1997 to 1998 and a member of the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Society of Financial Analysts from 1997 to He currently serves on the Board of Governors of the UBC Alumni Association in Hong Kong.

6 Ex-officio Governor representing CCA at CDNIS Dr. Anthony Cheng Dr. Cheng received his B.Sc. (1 st class Hons.) from Mount Allison University in New Brunswick and M.D. from UBC. He completed his ENT specialist training in Canada and returned to practise in Hong Kong and is the chief ENT Surgeon and former Medical Superintendent of the Hong Kong Central Hospital. He was a former Council Member of the Hong Kong Medical Association and has long involvement with the Suen Mei Speech and Hearing Centre for Deaf Children and has been its chairman since He is the founding council member of the North American Medical Association of Hong Kong and founding member of the Otolaryngology Society of Hong Kong. He was the former President and a Governor of the Alumni Association of UBC (Hong Kong) and was on the Leadership Committee and Advisory Council member in the world of opportunity campaign of UBC. For his alumni work for UBC, he received the Blythe Eagle Award for Outstanding Alumni. He was a former member of the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association of UBC. He was a founding member of the Surgical College of the Academy of Medicine of Hong Kong.
