4 Geographic Overview of Patenting 1 North America Europe Asia Insights Asia has emerged as the patent hub (in terms of patent density) in the digital age with countries such as China, South Korea and Japan taking a lead in patenting. However, North America has been able to translate its R&D spend into patents more precisely. A reason for this is because of the proximity of the companies to customers making patent filing more relevant in terms of business context. *Top logos under each geography listed on the map. 4

5 Geography North America 1 CANADA Canada shows an increase in it s annual R&D spend and the number of patents, with a CAGR of 3% and 2% respectively. The cumulative totals for the period are $274 billion for R&D investment and 452K in patents. U.S.A The United States shows a steady growth in cumulative R&D investment and the number of patents with CAGR of 4% and 9% respectively. 6 Geography Europe 1 U.K. The UK per capita number for patents is lower compared to other European countries considered in this analysis, even though UK has higher average population, compared with the European countries analyzed. Germany Germany shows a fluctuating year-on-year R&D spend, along with a declining trend in the number of patents. This may be due to factors such as German entities employing fragmented patent filing strategies, spread between the home country and other jurisdictions. Ukraine has the lowest R&D investment among the European countries analyzed, but has kept up in terms of the number of patents (cumulative filings of 107K in , which is comparable to France with 154K). Austria has the highest per capita number for patents, notwithstanding the fact that it has the lowest population of the European countries analyzed. The R&D investment in Spain has been fairly flat year-on-year, with the annual number of patents mirroring this trend. There has however been a slight uptick in the patents over the last three years of the analyzed period. 6

7 Geography Asia China China has held the top spot in recent times in terms of the growth in R&D investment and the growth in patents - CAGR of 21% and 25% respectively over The cumulative numbers for the same period include an R&D spend of $1039 billion and patent filings adding up to 7 million. South Korea Japan Korea has a cumulative R&D spend of $363 billion and the cumulative number of patents is 1.7 million ( ). Korea, like Canada, shows a balanced growth in R&D investment but has a slightly higher R&D spend. It is worth noting that the cumulative R&D spend of Korea is less than 10% of the cumulative R&D spend of US. However its patents are in the same order of magnitude. Japan has a cumulative R&D spend of $1541 billion for , and the cumulative number of patent is 3.8 million in the same period. 10 Industry Automotive 1 Key Insights Major focus of auto industry is on propulsion followed by interiors and body. Patents related to electric vehicles increased significantly after China, Japan followed by Germany and US are the top geographies for patenting. Though recording devices is currently a heavily patented area, the patent filings are anticipated to decrease over time.
