As discomforting as it has been at times, I say that we need to be grateful that we do get some relief when the trade winds are blowing in the right direction for many places on the mainland do not have natural AC like the trade winds to ease the discomfort people are experiencing. I was recently on the mainland and the temperature was in the upper 90s You could not be outside for too long before feeling like you were being fried!!! So again lucky we live in Hawaii. From another positive perspective, I understand that it has been good for the HVAC business as the contractors have had a long lead time for installation of new AC units and calls for servicing of existing units greatly increased! Regarding this new ASHRAE year, the chapter Board of Governors and Chairpersons are already in gear for the year s activities. The program committee has a great lineup of speakers and topic areas for the monthly meetings. I think you will find them interesting and worth coming to the meetings for. The YEA (Young Engineers) has already presented two technical programs and have had between participants. Chairpersons Dan Murakami and Diamond Pedro are continuing the momentum set by last year s YEA committee chairs. Hawaii Chapter was represented by 6 members at the recently held CRC (Chapter Regional Conference) held in San Gatos (San Jose) California August Bill Lee, Immediate chapter past president and I served as delegate and alternate delegate and others in attendance were Dean Borges, President Elect, Mofazzal Mir, Chapter Secretary, and Samantha Nivers, Membership Promotion Co-chairperson, Marites Calad, who is a regional director, also represented the local chapter. The three day event was filled with business matters as well as training sessions for all. The Hawaii Chapter was the recipient of several awards displaying again this chapter s leadership within the region. The recipients of these awards will be acknowledged for their great service at the upcoming meeting in September. Hope to see you there.

HE EA MAKAME Page 3 Main Presentation: Honolulu Seawater Air Conditioning This topic of this presentation will be the current status of the Honolulu Seawater Air Conditioning system and a refresher on how the system works and the benefits it will have for Hawai i. While seawater air conditioning (SWAC) is relatively new, it is a proven technology and systems in operation in the U.S., Canada, the Netherlands, and Sweden have achieved impressive economic and environmental results. A number of studies have been conducted to evaluate the potential of SWAC in Hawaii, and there is an operating system at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority (NELHA) at Keahole Point, Hawaii. These studies all show that there is significant potential for SWAC in Hawaii. SWAC is suitable for coastal developments with a large air conditioning demand and reasonable access to deep, cold seawater. Notable areas in Hawaii include southern Kauai, several areas of Oahu, and the southern 60 percent of the Big Island. Greg Wong and Vic Velasco will be the presenters. Greg Wong HSWAC Gregory Wong is the Director of Customer Service for Honolulu Seawater Air Conditioning (HSWAC), a 28,000 ton district cooling system currently under development by HSWAC in downtown Honolulu using deep seawater as the primary source of cooling. His responsibilities included assisting HSWAC s current and prospective clients with service-related questions, including, but not limited to, technical engineering, service agreements, and project updates. Prior to joining the HSWAC team four years ago, he served as operations manager at Navatek Ltd. for more than a decade, where he designed, built, and operated experimental vessels for the U.S. Navy and research organizations. He is co-chair of the Hawaii U.S. Green Building Council Existing Buildings Operations & Maintenance Committee. A graduate of Maryknoll High School, Wong holds a Master of Science in Ocean Engineering from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and a Bachelor of Arts in Marine Physics from the University of San Diego. Victor Velasco is a Senior Project Engineer for Honolulu Seawater Air Conditioning (HSWAC). His responsibilities include working in customer development and preparing for project construction. Prior to this position, he spent 20 years managing shore and ocean facilities for the US Navy in Naval Facilities Engineering Command and Civil Engineer Corps positions. He retired as a Commander having deployed twice in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and serving in two additional overseas tours. Victor Velasco HSWAC He is a registered Professional Mechanical Engineer in the State of Hawaii. He holds a Master of Science in Ocean Engineering from the University of Hawaii and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Florida. He volunteers with the Paepae o He eia Fish Pond and the Waikahe`olu Chapter of Trout Unlimited, and is an avid surfer and fisherman.

HE EA MAKAME Page 5 Paul Scotty Scott. ESI Lori Arakawa, P.E. DOD RJ Ritter Trane Corp. Richard Miller VSI David Lebowitz Oahu AC Hawaii Chapter Historical Report By Bill Lee P.E., Historical Committee Chair I have the privilege of serving as the Chapter Historian for this next year SY I would like to give some background on the Historical committee and its goals. 1. The primary goal is to establish a written history of the chapter that can be added to in an orderly manner as time passes. 2. Another goal is to record in written record important accomplishments in our industry within the chapter area. Important patents, and inventions and advancements in the art of HVAC made by individuals or firms in the chapter area. Even if the people involved at the time were not ASHRAE members their work should be recognized. I have always found reading about history to be interesting because it helps me understand the context of where we have come from, where we are now, and hopefully help us to understand where we are going, and not repeat the mistakes of the past. Within our short lifetime there has been a tremendous amount of change, which a great deal more to come. Just ponder about the internet and computer revolution that has changed our world within the last 20 years. Kids today cannot imagine life without the internet, tablets and streaming video entertainment. They probably think of those of us that grew up without such things like how we thought of our grandparents growing up with no televisions or in the horse and buggy days. So part of the committee s duties will be to remind the chapter of some of the past. To remind the chapter of how far we have come, and celebrate our achievements, and to record some of the present for the future. We plan to do this by having interesting articles and pictures in the monthly newsletter and website. Occasionally having a historical moment at the monthly meeting. And digging up and sharing fun facts about our HVAC industry history. I am looking for volunteers to be on the Historical committee, so please let me know if you are interested. You don t have to be over the hill to join. It s going to be a fun year.
Page 6 HE EA MAKAME Chapter Technology Transfer Committee Chair Report By Dean Borges P.E., CTTC Chair Aloha, This is the first article for the ASHRAE year from this Chapter Technology and Transfer Committee. We have a great year of programs and activities with technical updates as well as review of industry products in the monthly programs to be presented at the Chapter meetings and Technical Seminar. Thank you very much to the program committee chairpersons Lori Arakawa, P.E. and R.J. Ritter for a great job in soliciting programs and speakers for quite a well-rounded series of presentations. Richard Miller, chairperson for the Refrigeration this year will be coordinating these activities. Last but not least, ASHRAE technology awards considerations by Andrew Crossland chairperson of the Energy Awards and Technology committees who worked on our Website last year so diligently and persistently. I m looking forward to a great year for renewing old friendship and gaining new colleagues as well as adding to all of our repertoire of knowledge and learning Have a great ASHRAE year. CRC Region X Report By Bill Lee P.E. Our Hawaii chapter delegation consisted of :Bill Lee, Past President, Delegate, Donna Kishi, President, Alternate, Dean Borges, President- Elect, CTTC Chair, Moffazal Mir, Secretary, and Samantha Niver, MP chair, and Marites Calad Region Nominating committee alternate Donna and I had a memorable flight to the CRC. As we started to accelerate down the runway on the reef runway the pilot suddenly slammed on the brakes and came to a full stop. We were all glad we were in one piece and visions of tumbling down the emergency slides come into my mind. Luckily that did not happen. We taxied back to the terminal with a fire rescue truck escort and thankfully there was another plane standing ready for us. We had experienced a hot abort and lived to tell the tale. Although a few hours late, I was very thankful to arrive at our destination. Continued Next Page
HE EA MAKAME Page 7 CRC Region X Report, Cont. The rest of the CRC was not as memorable after that. For the delegate and alternates the CRC consists of a lot of meetings, concerning motions, nominations for regional officers, discussions on regional budgets, nominating people for honors, and listening and giving our chapter reports (14 chapters in our region). This year we had two technical session speakers about ASHRAE 90.4 Energy Standard for Data Centers and Telecommunications Buildings, and Zero net energy office buildings. We also attend training seminars on various committees such as chapter operations, CTTC, Membership Promotion, Finance, Research Promotion, Government Grass Roots, Historical, etc. And there is the welcome dinner, and awards banquet. All of this jam packed into 2-1/2 days starting from 6 am to around 9 pm. Or later if you so choose. (YEA events for the young and young at heart). To highlight some items that affect our chapter the most was the passing of the region X budget. The region had proposed a whopping increase from $6 to $12.44 per Area Assigned Member (AAM) in order to support Regional operations. Regional operations mainly consists of reimbursements to regional officers for travel, and hotel for chapter visits, and hotels for centralized training, and annual and winter conferences. It should also be realized that it was only 3 years ago that this assessment was raised from $3.50 to $6. It should also be noted that because local chapter dues are strictly voluntary not all AAM assigned to our chapter (272) pay our chapter dues (169 paid). Our local chapter dues are $25 a year. At the $6 regional charge it eats up around 39% of our local chapter dues, at the proposed $12.44 rate it would eat up 80%. I vigorously objected to this increase and argued that charge should be kept at $6, and the region budget be trimmed accordingly. In my mind the regional structure exists to support the local chapters and not vice a versa. At such a high proportional rate of charge it undermines the local chapter operations. Unfortunately, there was not much support for bringing down the regional charge. At most the charge was brought down to $10 per AAM. Again I was not in favor of this as it still eats up approximately 64% of our local chapter dues. It detrimental to our local chapter operations and in my mind gives us very little to no benefits in return. However the budget passed 13 to 1. Hawaii was the only chapter to vote against it. I am sorry I was not persuasive enough in my arguments to my fellow delegates. But I am sure we will see the results of this action in the future years. The other highlight is we did get a motion passed involving the availability of remote training of MP, RP, and Student Activities for those who cannot make it to centralized training. It goes up to society for action. So it is not a done deal yet, but we had much more support on this motion. For the Regional Awards Hawaii as always took it s share of regional awards. Donna will highlight them at the next meeting. Again thanks for all the officers, BOG, committee members, and chapter members who supported the chapter this past year. And I urge everyone to support Donna and the new officers, and BOG in this new year to again make the Hawaii chapter even better.

HE EA MAKAME Page 9 Images from the CRC in San Jose, Cont. Message from the Newsletter Editor By Kevin Luoma, P.E. It is a new chapter year and I have the privilege to be the newsletter letter editor for the chapter year Hopefully I can maintain the high level that our President Elect, Dean Borges did last year. I decided to change up the format this year, hopefully you like. I will try to include an engineering quote in each newsletter to make people think or laugh. Here is the first one: I was originally supposed to become an engineer but the thought of having to expend my creative energy on things that make practical everyday life even more refined, with a loathsome capital gain as the goal, was unbearable to me.
