CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 4:04 p.m. 2. REVIEW AGENDA The Agenda was approved as presented with no adjustments or changes. 3. CONSENT AGENDA That the Board approves the following items within the Consent Agenda: (a) Minutes of the November 29, 2011 Public Meeting MOTION: That the Board of Governors approves the Consent Agenda as submitted. Moved: R. Upright Seconded: G. Bentham CARRIED 5. BUSINESS ARISING FROM PAST MINUTES April 26, 2011 Board of Governors Minutes, Agenda Item #8: Marketing Services Agency Change. Action Item: The Board of Governors asked for a presentation from the new agency, MacLaren McCann. The following people entered the boardroom: Viola Midegs, Director of Marketing Ric Fedyna, Senior Vice President, General Manager, MacLaren McCann Nicolle Pittman, Associate Creative Director, MacLaren McCann Vice President Academic Dr. Gord Nixon introduced Viola Medegs, Director of Marketing. Viola introduced Ric Fedyna and Nicolle Pittman and spoke briefly about the MacLaren McCann agency. Ric Fedyna provided a PowerPoint presentation overviewing the philosophy, core competencies and scope of MacLaren McCann. Nicolle Pittman then introduced the Get Real Recruitment Campaign and This Changes Everything TTC campaign to Board members. At the conclusion of the presentation the agency answered various questions from Board members, one of which was inquiring about the size of the Calgary office. The answer provided was the Calgary office housed 43 employees in 10,000 square feet of office space, with the Toronto office acting as back up on a national basis with an office of 400, and 100 people alone dedicated to digital. In answer to the question regarding how many people have worked on the TTC campaign, it was stated that the number varied depending on the task, i.e., four employees are assigned the TTC campaign on a regular basis along with a team of graphic designers. 3 involved. Another question was asked if the people in the print ads are real SAIT students with the answer given that half are SAIT students and half are models to ensure good cross section representation. The agency tries to use SAIT students wherever possible. 6. CHAIR S REPORT Chair Bill Lingard reported on the following items: The School of Transportation s Industry Breakfast was held Tuesday, March 13, Irene Lewis, Wes Jamieson, Amanda Roberts, Paul Storwick, Colin Gutor and Raynie Wood were on hand to represent the Board. SAIT won a gold and two silver awards at the 27 th Annual Educational Advertising Awards competition, sponsored by the Higher Education Marketing Report. The USbased competition is the largest of its kind in the country for educational advertising. This year more than 2,900 entries were received from more than 1,000 colleges, universities and secondary schools from all 50 states in the US and several other countries. SAIT s winnings consisted of: Gold Medal for the Continuing Education Guide for Fall 2011 Silver Medal for the Career and Program Guide 2012 Silver Medal for the Recruitment and Continuing Education Ad Campaign 2012 On Tuesday, March 6, former New Brunswick Premier and TD Bank s Deputy Chair Frank McKenna presented to SAIT a donation of $300,000 for bursaries in the School of Business and the Aboriginal fiscal literacy program. Three days later on March 9, former member of Parliament and CIBC s Senior Executive Vice President and Vice Chairman Jim Prentice made a $375,000 donation in support of the Trades and Technology Complex and bursaries in the School of Business. And saving the best for last our own President and CEO Irene Lewis will be one of the celebs taking part in the Calgary Dance Foundation Dancing with the Calgary Stars being held September 13 in the Palomino Room at the BMO Centre. This will be a fundraiser to support talented young Calgarians headed to the 2013 Canadian Amateur Dance Championships in Eastern Canada. PRESIDENT S REPORT President Lewis reported on the following items The SAIT FIRST Robotics Team enjoyed a huge success at the competition in Toronto. The team left with the most number of awards than any team other competing and earned them the right to go to the FIRST Robotics final in Saint Louis at the end of April. A very special thanks to the faculty members who give their private time to sponsor and mentor a team. SAIT architectural technologies students are in Guatemala for a two-week practicum and volunteer work program. Thirteen architectural technologies students, one electrical apprentice, four instructors and one alumnus will utilize their education and skills to help improve the lives of those living in Central America. With regard to the Afghanistan Graduation Video that will be shown later in the meeting, it was noted that Dr. Gord Nixon sent over grad caps, gowns and scarves to ensure the graduation was genuine and very special. It is also important to note that John Aldred s son, Ryan is President of the Canadian International Learning Foundation was instrumental in this initiative. The federal government announced $3.5M in funding for SAIT to establish a new composite materials centre, in partnership with Alberta Injection Molding (AIM). The new centre will be housed in AIM s facility and will allow students to design and create marketable composite products. Federal funding through Western Diversification will see $512,170 plus an additional $200,000 through NSERC to expand the applied research services offered through its Sports and Wellness Engineering Technology Institute (SWETI). ARIS will work to design and manufacture new sports and wellness products. 8. SAITSA PRESIDENT S REPORT President Steven Hildebrand was not available to provide a report. ACADEMIC COUNCIL Dr. Gord Nixon, Vice President, Academic reviewed the Academic Council minutes of February 14, 2012, specifically drawing Board members attention to Item #4 on page 3, SIRs (Student Instructional Report). The SIR is a standard tool SAIT uses to evaluate programs, courses and instruction, with the goal of improving institutional performance. During a presentation made to Academic Council on this subject, research findings were reviewed and strategies discussed regarding analyzing student feedback. 10. AFGHANISTAN GRADUATION VIDEO Gord Nixon provided background information regarding this special video, saying that in 2007 John Aldred, a former Board member and significant SAIT donor, introduced a project in which he became active that brought education and training to women in Afghanistan. SAIT became involved and delivered the first course in The course was in Project Management, taught on-line and was a huge success. All 12 graduates went on to secure full-time jobs, earning $800 per month compared with the average wage of $60 per month. Last week was International Women s day, and through a skype call from halfway around the world, the President, senior executives and media were able to congratulate 16 new SAIT graduates. A very proud moment for both the Afghanistan graduates and SAIT. 11.
