He joined the energy market in 2000 first acting as a risk manager and thereafter responsible for developing the power and gas assets of Dutch Utility Nuon, including the acquisition of a.o. Reliant Energy in the Benelux and expansion into Belgium and Germany. In 2008, he joined the erisk Group. With his background as a micro-economist, he has a strong understanding of market mechanisms and matches his sharp sense of observation with solid quantitative analytics capacities. Ruut is ever keen to expand his expertise by learning from new markets and/or policy instruments, yet combining his natural interest for new information with a strong sense of leadership. 2 Partner The erisk Group is a partnership of three senior energy specialists, with an extensive experience in the financial and energy markets. erisk Group provides quantitative and strategic advice to energy companies, industrials and governmental organisations. Activities have included: - Advisor stakeholders (mainly Province of Limburg and Sogecom N.V.) in underground pump storage project (O-PAC). Developing the initial business case. - Setting up an electricity demand management company together with other partners ( Involved in two pilot projects. One focusing on demand side management with households, the other project with a large corporate - Analyzing electricity, steam, cold and CO2 supply to large international corporates through CHP (Combined Heat and Power plant). Analysis focused on economic value and risks under various long term energy market scenarios. - Study for large dutch energy company to evaluate to development of the spark spread in the future in relation to their generation portfolio and developing a lobby strategy January 2000-February 2009 Nuon, Amsterdam 10/ /2008 Director Corporate Development & Strategy Department responsible for strategy, regulatory affairs, new technology and all corporate M&A activities. - Main strategy projects were: retail entry plans for Germany and Belgium, gas strategy (resulting in building up storage facilities in the Netherlands and Germany and acquiring upstream portfolio), generation strategy (main result was investment in large scale IGCC, first phase to be finalized in 2012) and renewables (including the acquisition of thin film solar technology Helianthos from AKZO & Shell). - Regulatory affairs were dominated by unbundling debate and liberalization of the gas market and the subsequent unbundling of Gasunie. - In 2007 the New Technology Board was created resulting in a more focused approach to new developments. This was also instrumental with the acquisition of Helianthos and the founding of a new technology fund ( Yellow & Blue ) - M&A activities primarily centered on Nuon s own future. In depth discussions with shareholders and European energy companies resulting in various attempts to merge (Essent) or sell part of the company were the main activities. Successfully grown Nuon sales portfolio and closed several long term power transactions and power plant acquisitions. Highlights included: - 15-year PPA on new build CCGT (800 MW) in Rotterdam with InterGen - Acquisition of Demkolec, an IGCC (Coalgasifier), 250 MW (Demkolec) - Acquisition of Reliant Europe, 4,000 MW diverse portfolio of power plants (Coal, Gas, BFG gas) - Several wind farms in the Netherlands and Norway 1/2000-8/2000 Corporate Risk Manager Responsible for setting up of Risk Management Department. Initial focus on Electricity and Natural Gas Trading. Tasks included analyzing all financial risks (market, credit and operational) incurred by Nuon. These risks can be part of ongoing business or new risks as a result of new projects or M&A activities. Business focus changed dramatically with the new global operation away from proprietary trading into client driven business, increasing revenues substantially. Important activities were relocating a substantial part of all non-euro business to London. 7/96-3/97 Co-Head of Global Fixed Income and Derivatives One of 5 managers worldwide selected to form a global management team for investment banking. 5 2011 Eneco Study into the developement of generation capacity in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany in relation to the development of spark and darkspreads over the period Participation in smart grid project Smart Grid Rendement voor iedereen of Task Force Innovation Utrecht. The project aims to investigate the possibilities of demand side management with households and small enterprises. Eemflow supplies the intelligence to optimize demand versus e.g. solar radiation, wind force of the imbalance market Large industrial OPAC Review of contractual energy position. The client has outsourced the supply of power, gas, CO2, steam and cooling to a company that has build dedicated CHPs on the premises of the clients plants in Europe. Focus of the study was their Italy. The contract between the client and the supplier was reviewed against the opportunities in the Italian power and gas markets. OPAC ( is a large scale pumpstorage project in the province of Limburg. (1,400MW, 6 8 GWh). The project is unique a it tries to create a hydroreservoir at a depth of approximately 1,500 meters.
