1 Guadalupe River Park Conservancy Biographies, Board, Advisory Board, Staff Jim Alves Jim is a third generation Santa Clara/San Jose resident. While working his way through high school and college at the family business, Jim developed a fond interest in automotive repairs and care. He joined his father Tony in 1978 at Hardcastle Brothers Autobody after graduation from Santa Clara University s School of Business. Together they transitioned their shop to the third generation while diversifying into other associated business ventures. Jim has worked with local vocational training centers through out his career. He served as a member of the Plant Master Plan Community Advisory Group for the San Jose/Santa Clara Water Pollution Control Plant. As a business neighbor, literally in the Guadalupe Gardens since the earliest inception, Jim is thrilled to see the growth and ongoing progress of the river park and gardens. Jim brings his small business management skills and style as well as his love for the outdoors, especially gardening, to the Guadalupe River Park Conservancy. Terry Austen Terry is a native San Josean. Academic credentials include a BS-Biology degree from Santa Clara University, and an MBA from San Jose State University. Terry began his health care management career as Laundry Manager for the now-defunct San Jose Medical Center. While at SJMC, he moved into finance and information technology management positions, leaving in 1992 to run a physician-owned medical billing/practice management company. In 1998, he prepared the company for sale to a national emergency services provider, and joined Kaiser Permanente as CFO for the three hospitals comprising the South Bay Service Area: Redwood City, San Jose and Santa Clara. He was promoted to Senior VP/Area Health Plan Manager in 2004, responsible for health care delivery to 200,000 KP members in San Jose, Morgan Hill and Gilroy. Board experience: Santa Clara City Library Foundation, San Jose/Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce (Chair-2006), San Jose Library Foundation, The Tech Museum of Innovation, and currently: American Cancer Society (Board President ), San Jose State University Research Foundation and the Guadalupe River Park Conservancy. Terry and his wife Carol live in the Rose Garden area of San Jose where they tend roses, orchids and a wine cellar! Dan Caputo Dan Caputo Jr.is president of Dan Caputo Co., a family owned company started by his father in 1931 as construction company which is now a real estate management and investment company. He is a lifelong resident of San Jose and received a degree in accounting from Santa Clara University in While at Santa Clara, he was a three year member of the University s first Rowing Team. Except for one year period immediately after graduation, when he worked for a local CPA firm, Dan has spent his entire working life employed in his family s business. He has worked in every facet of the construction business from general labor to project manager and estimator. Dan has personally prepared bids for and managed a wide range of engineering construction projects, ranging from bridges to water and sewage treatment plants. Concurrent with his work in the construction business, Dan has been involved in the real estate investment and management business and worked extensively on the conversion of his family s business from a construction company to a real estate management company. Dan has three grown children and four grandchildren. He belongs to the San Jose Rotary Club, is involved in a number of community groups and has been President for several organizations including: Books Aloud (which records books for the blind), San Jose s Christmas in the Park, San Jose Kiwanis Club and the Civic Club of San Jose. Until just recently he was a recreational bicyclist who rode his bike 80 to 100 miles per week. He has given up the bicycle and now swims three or four days a week. Devin Conway Devin Conway is a Civil Engineer and Principal with Verde Design, a regional design firm focusing in landscape architecture. Devin graduated from Santa Clara University, and has been a member of the Rotary Club of San Jose since Devin s personal interests include being outdoors, keeping plants alive by not gardening too often, playing soccer, and spending time with his family, who reside in Los Gatos.

2 Kelly Hattley Kelly has lived in the Bay Area for over 25 years where she attended Santa Clara High School and obtained AAs in Communications and Psychology from West Valley Community College. She attended San Diego State University where she received a BA in psychology and also volunteered on campus giving tours to prospective students and counseled incoming students on course selection. While in college she worked as an administrative assistant in the construction industry and she also tutored and worked with children living with autism. Soon after graduation, she began working at a BDO Seidman as a facilities manager, where she remained for 3 years. Then in 2004 she moved from San Diego back to the bay area and began working for Boston Properties. Kelly has been a property manager at Boston Properties since 2004 and currently manages 2 million square feet of class A, commercial property in San Jose and Mountain View. She manages the local San Jose office. Kelly is currently an executive member of the San Jose Downtown Association and will be on the Downtown San Jose Parking board beginning October of In addition, Kelly is a devoted mom to a 4-year-old daughter and a 2-year-old son. Sheryl Hinshaw Sheryl is a CPA and partner with Johanson and Yau Accountancy Corporation, where she specializes in tax planning and compliance services for individuals, estates and trusts. Sheryl is a speaker on wealth preservation and estate planning and has been an active member in the Silicon Valley chapter of Vistage International, an association of corporate executives, since Sheryl earned her undergraduate degree from UC Santa Barbara and a Master s in Taxation from Golden Gate University. She is a longtime volunteer treasurer at the MIT/Stanford Venture Laboratory and has shared her expertise with many non-profit boards. Born and raised in Silicon Valley, Sheryl enjoys the local arts and environment, and the small wineries of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Jeff Lawson Jeff Lawson is a shareholder and director of the Silicon Valley Law Group. He heads the firm s environmental practice. He has considerable experience in the areas of: commercial litigation; environmental litigation; and water rate litigation. His environmental practice includes: compliance, defense of enforcement actions; real property site assessments; cleanups under Federal and State Superfund statutes; due diligence; development of contaminated sites; water rights; the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA); the Clean Air Act; the Clean Water Act; Proposition 65; risk assessments; underground storage tanks; and environmental insurance. He has represented clients in state and federal court and before federal, state and local environmental regulatory and political entities involving a variety of land use, permitting and enforcement matters. Recognized as one of Northren California s top 100 lawyers by Thomson Rueters. Member of the Executive Committee of the environmental law section of the California Bar Association. He also serves as a mediator in environmental and commercial disputes. He is a retired California Air National Guard Brigadier General. Jed Mettee Coming soon. Amelia Norris Coming soon. Katherine Oven Katherine was born and raised in Monterey, and earned a BS in Civil Engineering at Santa Clara University and an MS in Civil Engineering at MIT. A registered civil engineer, she is currently a Deputy Operating Officer at the Santa Clara Valley Water District, where she has management oversight of a $1 billion water utility capital improvement program. Prior to joining the Water District 10 years ago, Katherine s career spanned 20 years of working at various engineering consulting firms both in Boston and in San Jose. Katherine has two grown sons and, to date, one lovely daughter-in-law. She loves living in San Jose because of its climate, diversity, and access to cultural and sporting events and the great outdoors. Katherine has served on church boards and has been involved with church music ministry for most of her life. As a board member of the GRPC, she wants to help promote and expand the next generation s knowledge, appreciation, and respect for the environment within their back yards, and in community parks such as the Guadalupe River Park and Gardens.

3 Michael Parrish Coming soon. Michelle Peacock Michelle M. Peacock is Executive Director for Strategy, New Ventures and Markets Government Relations, ebay Inc., based in San Jose, California. Michelle began her career in 1987 with the Beneficial Corp. consumer finance company, and left when the company was sold in During that time she became Director of Government Relations, managing tax and commerce issues in Washington DC before moving to Boston, Massachusetts to set up a state government relations program in In 1998, she joined Microsoft Corp. in Washington, DC, to assist the establishment of state government relations for the company with special focus on state attorneys general during a pending multi-state lawsuit against the company. In 2000 Michelle moved to California to join Cisco Systems, where she worked as head of State Government Relations for 3 years before joining ebay in At ebay, Michelle joined a very small team of GR professionals and set up the company s first state government relations program before moving to PayPal in She has spent the last three years providing Government Relations support to PayPal s business leaders as they expand the PayPal offerings to customers around the world. In October 2011, Michelle began a new role for the company, focusing on Global Government Relations for Strategy, New Ventures and Markets for both ebay and the PayPal businesses. Michelle is married, has two children and lives in the historic Willow Glen neighborhood of San Jose. Francois Rodigari Francois is the Director of Water Quality and Environmental Services for San Jose Water Company. He and his family have lived in the Bay Area for over 21 years. Francois past involvement with community organizations include having served on his children s private school board, as President of the Alameda Soccer Club, and as a technical resource for the San Francisco Estuary Institute. His goals as a board member is to increase awareness of the wildlife in the Park, to focus on trail development, and to help make the Park a destination. Francois is a recreational runner and looks forward to see the Park become a running hub for the greater San Jose area. Jodi Starbird Jodi Starbird is a Principal at David J. Powers and Associates, an environmental consulting and planning firm in San Jose, where she has been employed for over 25 years. She has prepared various environmental and permitting documents for creek trail and parks projects, including the extensions of the Los Gatos and Coyote Creek Trails in San José and the Stevens Creek Trail in Mountain View. Jodi is a U.C. Davis graduate with a Bachelor s Degree in Environmental Policy Analysis and Planning, with an emphasis in City and Regional Planning. Jodi is the mother of three sons, a downtown San Jose resident, and frequent runner on the creek trails of the Bay Area, including the trail within the Guadalupe River Park and Gardens. Brandon Steene Brandon Steene is the Branch Manager for the Silicon Valley branch of ValleyCrest Landscape Maintenance in San Jose and has worked for the company for the past 14 years. ValleyCrest Companies is the country's largest integrated landscape company with a 60 year reputation for unparalleled knowledge and technical ability. Brandon was born and raised in Calgary, Canada and holds an AD in Landscape Management and a Bachelor of Science in horticulture from Olds College. Brandon is married and lives with his wife and two young children in the Willow Glen neighborhood. As a former downtown San Jose resident, Brandon is enthusiastic about having the Guadalupe River Park & Gardens become an integral part of the downtown experience for everyone.

4 Council of Advisors Brian Adams Brian is the Vice President for Advancement at Bellarmine College Preparatory. He has an extensive media background, having been Vice President at Orloff/Williams Advertising & Public Relations, Associate Publisher of Silicon Valley Biz Ink, and Co-Publisher and Editor of Valley Scene newspaper. Brian also enjoyed a 22-year career in television broadcasting at KICU in San Jose and is currently a lecturer in Communications at Santa Clara University. He is a two-time Emmy nominee. Born and raised in San Jose, Brian is also a board member of the American Cancer Society and the YWCA of Silicon Valley, and has been actively involved with other organizations such as InnVision. A graduate of James Lick High School, Brian is an honoree of the East Side Union High School District Hall of Fame. He attended San Jose State University, where he received a B.A. in Radio-Television Broadcasting and a Master's degree in Mass Communication. Brian was honored by the Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce in 2006 with the Community Leadership Alumni Award. Bill Del Biaggio, Jr. Bill was born and raised in San Jose. He is a graduate of the University of Oregon. Bill was General Manager of Santa Clara Valley Distributors, a family business, until its sale in 1991 to Coors of Santa Clara Valley; and General Manager of the new organization until He was part of the founding group of Heritage Bank of Commerce which opened in June 1994 and has been Chairman of the Board since its beginning. Bill currently spends his time between Heritage Bank and volunteering for many local community non-profits, including the O Conner Hospital Board of Directors; and the Board of Directors of San Jose Rotary. Gloria Duffy Gloria is the CEO of the Commonwealth Club of California and a member of Stanford University's Center for International Security and Arms Control. From she served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense in the Clinton Administration where she headed the $1.3 billion Nunn-Lugar program of US assistance to Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan for the dismantling of nuclear weapons. Gloria was the founder and first President of the World Forum of Silicon Valley, which recently merged with the Commonwealth Club. She earned M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in political science from Columbia University and an undergraduate degree from Occidental College. Gloria was a member of the Guadalupe Gardens Advisory Board which developed the master plan for Guadalupe Gardens, and first President of the Board of Directors of the Guadalupe River Park & Gardens Corporation. Jerry Estruth Jerry is a graduate of Stanford University with a degree in history. He served in the Peace Corps in Columbia for six years as a volunteer and as Regional Director. He was a member of the San Jose City Council from and Vice Mayor in Jerry's civic and community affiliations are extremely numerous, but include Directorship of the Santa Clara County Open Space Authority in 1994; Chair of the Measure A Open Space Campaign in 1990; and Treasurer of the City's Bicentennial Commission from Jerry was formerly a member of the Board of Directors of Planned Parenthood, the Santa Clara Valley Land Trust, the San Jose Hospital Association, San Jose Urban Ministry, and American Cancer Society. He was a member of the Board of the original Friends of the Guadalupe River Park. Jerry is employed by DeanWitter and resides in Arizona. Vic Giacalone Vic is the President and owner of The Best Electrical Company, located on Park Avenue near the Guadalupe River. He was born and raised in San Jose, graduating from Santa Clara University with a degree in Business. He and his wife, Mariana, have raised four children. Vic is a former President of the San Jose Historical Museum Association, deeply involved for many years at Bellarmine College Preparatory, and active in local professional organizations. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the San Jose Repertory Theatre. In past years he has paddled (and at times carried) his canoe down the Guadalupe, ending up in Alviso. Hardly a week goes by when he does not use the trails to run the entire length of the park. He is very interested in seeing the Guadalupe River Park & Gardens fully developed. In his spare time, Vic is an avid fisherman.

5 Desiree La Maggiore Desiree was born and raised in San Jose. She earned a B.S. in Graphic Design from San Jose State University and has been a resident of downtown San Jose since Her professional work experience is mostly high-tech and all marketing: Hewlett-Packard, Claris Software, 3Com, and Adobe. In the midst of the tech experience, she took a 2-year detour and worked in a small start-up tea business (wholesale and retail). Desiree's community affiliations started through her neighborhood association, CCA (Campus Community Neighborhood Association) and Naglee Park. Desiree currently holds the position of Director of Internal Communications and Community Relations for Adobe Systems. She is married to Vince Maggiore and has a young daughter, Isabella. Douglas McLendon Doug recently retired from a professional career that included both banking and nonprofit management. He was most recently the Development Director for the American Musical Theatre. His extensive nonprofit experience includes past Board membership with the San Jose Symphony, the Children's Discovery Museum, the Second Harvest Food Bank, the American Beethoven Society, the YMCA, the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society, the San Jose Hospital Foundation, the Joint Agency Trust and the California League for the Handicapped. He has been a long time member of the Rotary Club of San Jose and The Guardsmen. He served as the second President of the Board of Directors of the Guadalupe River Park & Gardens Corporation. David Pandori David served two terms as a member of the San Jose City Council representing District 3, which includes downtown San Jose and the Guadalupe River Park & Gardens. He earned a B.A. in Environmental Studies from San Jose State University, a Masters Degree in City Planning from U.C. Berkeley, and a J.D. from Hastings College of Law. David was a Policy Advisor for Mayor Tom McEnery from before his election to the Council in He led the successful drive to obtain $14 million in county funding for the Guadalupe River Park & Gardens and was instrumental in the merger of the Friends of the Guadalupe River Park with the Guadalupe Gardens Corporation in David is now an Assistant District Attorney with Santa Clara County. Bob Rhodes An accounting graduate of Cal State Sacramento, Bob was a licensed CPA in California from 1963 until his retirement in Bob was a founding board member of the Silicon Valley Planned Giving Council and has previously served as Chair of the YMCA of Santa Clara Valley, Chair of Santa Clara Valley Chapter American Red Cross, a Board member of Second Harvest Food Bank, and as a Trustee of the San Jose Rotary Endowment, among many other community involvements. He is particularly interested in the development of park trails. Dave Sandretto Dave recently retired as Executive Director of Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. Prior to taking this position in 1998, he was the principal of the Public Affairs Consulting Group, a firm that worked with local businesses and corporations in areas involving public policy, government affairs, and community relations. Dave formerly was responsible for Local and Regional Government Affairs and Community Relations for IBM in Santa Clara County. He is the former president of the Board of Directors of the California Association of Food Banks, a current member of the Board of Director of the San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Rotary Club of San Jose. Dave's education includes a BA in Industrial Management from Cal State, Sacramento, and graduate studies at U.C. Berkeley. Phil Sims Phil earned his undergraduate degree in History at Cal State Northridge and his Juris Doctor degree from Santa Clara University School of Law. He specializes in corporate and general business law with special emphasis on employment issues, and has been extremely active in the legal community, serving as President of the Santa Clara County Bar Association, and Past Chair of the Nonprofit Organizations Committee of the State Bar of California. Phil s leadership in the local community includes past service as President of San Jose Rotary, Chairman of the San Jose Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the San Jose Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Chair of the Metropolitan Board of the Santa Clara Valley YMCA. He has served on the Board of Directors and as an officer of the Center for Excellence in Nonprofits (CEN) and the California Association of Nonprofits (CAN).

6 James E. Towery Jim is a graduate of Princeton University & Emory University School of Law. He is a partner in the San Jose law firm of Hoge, Fenton, Jones & Appel specializing in the defense of professional liability claims, business litigation, and personal injury litigation. He served as President of the State Bar of California in On the local level, Jim is past president of the Santa Clara County Bar Association and served as Chair of the Board of Trustees of Alexian Brothers Hospital in San Jose. He also helped found the Silicon Valley Campaign for Legal Services and the Lincoln High School Foundation. For fifteen years, Jim enjoyed coaching Lincoln's mock trial team. Jim served as President of GRP&G in He enjoys gardening on occasion, in the orchard, the Courtyard Garden, and even on occasion in the Rose Garden. Ken Yeager In June 2006 Ken was elected to the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, representing District 4, after serving six years on the San Jose City Council representing Willow Glen and the Rose Garden areas. As a Council member, Ken took an active leadership role in breathing life into the all-but-forgotten trail system in San Jose. At his urging, the City created a new trails coordinator position. Prior to his election to the Council, Ken was a faculty member in the Department of Political Science, San Jose State University and served as a Trustee of the San Jose/Evergreen Community College Board from He earned his undergraduate degree from San Jose State, and holds three graduate degrees, including a Ph.D. in Education from Stanford University. He has run more than 27 marathons and looks forward to planning and running races in GRP&G.

7 Staff Phil Cornish: Program Manager Phil is a graduate of U.C. Berkeley with a degree in Biological Environmental Science and a minor in Forestry and Resource Management. He has experience teaching environmental education at Walden West, and was instrumental in establishing and administering a composting program while at school in Berkeley. Phil is also a Master Composter and teaches composting workshops. In his spare time, Phil plays bluegrass mandolin and raises two young girls, Lexy and Ava, with his wife Ivona. Leslee Hamilton: Executive Director Leslee holds a BA in Business Economics from U.C. Santa Barbara and served in the Peace Corps in Paraguay in the 1980s, where she worked in a rural cooperative and provided support and training to other Peace Corps volunteers. Her employment background includes extensive work on public policy, including policy related to environmental issues, and government service. Leslee s most recent employment was with San Jose State University s Mineta Transportation Institute, where she was the Communications and Special Projects Director. Jeremy Dalton: Volunteer Coordinator Jeremy is currently a student as San Jose State working on a double-major in Environmental Studies and Kinesiology and a minor in Spanish. He also works a second job as a gymnastics coach at California Sports Center. In the rare moments of free time, he enjoys Spanish guitar, Latin dance, composting, gardening, and training gymnastics. Joe Salvato: Education Coordinator Joe is a graduate of the University of San Francisco with a degree in Environmental Studies. A San Jose native, he volunteered with GRPC in high school before joining the education staff in Passionate about education from a young age, he enjoys the opportunity to combine that passion with his affinity for the outdoors and pride in his hometown. Richard Tejeda: Education Coordinator Richard was born in Corpus Christi, Texas. He attended West Valley College where he obtained an A.S. in Park Management. He plans to transfer to San Jose State to either the Environmental Science or Biological Science department. Richard has worked for Big Basin Redwoods State Park and for Santa Clara County Parks at Vasona, Lexington and Los Gatos Creek. Richard currently holds certificates in or as an Emergency First Responder, CPR/BLS, Interpretive Park Guide, Wildland Fire Suppression, Laws of Arrest, Use of Magic & Science Toys in Outdoor Education and the Salmon Trout Education Program. He volunteers for multiple agencies and is married to his wife Tanya and has two boys; Elijah 11 and Gabriel 5.
