2 investigating My investigation included finding out how to make a desk for my room. I needed a desk in my room because I did not have anything to put my gear on like my computer or my games and I also need a table to work on. I am going to investigate other designs that I am going to look at on the internet. and I am also looking at desks all around my school. 2

3 design brief student desk / table, it will be used for my home work and to hold my sound system, TV. i will use it to sort out and store paper work from my part time job comfortable to sit at. I want to use a standard chair, size is height 450 mm. strong and stable.because I want to store some heavy stuff on my table. welded frame timber top. I want my table to be made out of RHS steel.i want to use recycled material because i don t have enough money to buy fresh materials. 3

4 Analysis of existing products table1 table 2 This design of the storage rack is smaller then I need. The wheels are not a good idea because it is not stable and safe This is a design that I like but the frame is too thin and not strong enough but i think the draws need to be more stable then they look 4

5 table 3 table 4 This table looks strong and stable except that the welds would need to be strong and there is no storage. This is the use of my table but I don t want it to be this untidy and I would make a bigger storage area to the side. 5

6 comparing Designs i am comparing all the photographs from the internet and comparing them with my design ideas. These are the designs and photographs that i was looking at for my table, I was comparing the height length and width so that i know what design and size i want. The table frame designs that i found have frames that are too skinny, i want my table frame to be stronger than the ones in my research on the internet 6

7 Investigation of product material options I chose white and the natural shade of the timber as the colours for my desk because they are neutral colours which will blend in with my room. I chose RHS because it is strong and long lasting metal also it is easy to cut square and weld straight an also easy to put plastic feet in and the feet are so the metal does not scratch the floor. after testing the weld techniques i found that the RHS is a strong good metal to weld. this is the kind of weld that i will use for my project investigation of welding techniques i used fillet welds in the corners of my project. with my project i put it on its side then i welded it together 7

8 i could possibly use tube or pipe to make my frame but this would be hard to weld because it is round and you have to shape it to weld it. this is the kind of welder that i will be doing the fillet and but welds with. This is a mig welder used for fillet welds and mig welds i culde of use angle metal but i found that it is bendy and not as strong i used RHS because RHS is more stronger and straight 8

9 This is one of the tests that I did to see how strong the weld was. I did a but weld and cut the joint to check penetration. testing welds 9

10 Investigating welding techniques This is the welder that I used to make my project after testing with this machine I found that the best settings were. wire speed 5 voltage 5 this gave a weld with good penetration on RHS. 10

11 Analysis of information After looking at many designs and testing materials I made some sketches to work out my best design. planing product Design ideas I was thinking about having a back board on my desk so nothing falls off the back of it and I was going to have a decorative feature on the desk top that would suit it. I decided to make a shelf instead of drawers because I was going to store my gear in a plastic tub. I decided that the back board was not needed because I was deciding to go with a simple design. 11

12 my final design drawing I drew up a plan to show how the height and the width is on my design of the table and that it shows how long every thing needs to be cut to size. the bracket is that strong that it dose not fall apart and that it holds the top on. 12

13 product success against brief the use of my table. I am using my table in my room so I can get all of my homework done..i did want a back board on my table but I decided not to have it on there..my back table was going to be so that stuff dos not fall of or roll of my table. addressing points from design brief 1. It holds my t.v good and it is staple as well 2.It is comfortable to site at because it is not to hight 3. It is strong and stable because I tested it with some heavy stuff 4.I mad my table out of recycled timber and metal so that the cost is kept low 13

14 analysis of the impact of the product By making my own table that is very well made, strong and built to last, I could use it for a long time. it is definitely not like the cheap desks that you get in stores in town. The impact of using furniture that lasts is good for the environment because less resources are being used up. The impact for me personally is that can organise my room better and I have some were to site and work. I have learnt to make my own furniture and learnt a lot abut making furniture and I have also developed my welding skills in time 14
