GCSE Design & Technology: Resistant Materials Technology Unit 1: Creative Design and Make Activities (5RM01) Design Activity Controlled Assessment 20 hours TASK: (please tick) Storage Lighting Furniture Leisure The garden DESIGN BRIEF: (please state) Design and Make some shoe storage to fit in an allocated space in my room. I want to be able to see each pair of shoes and easily take them out and put them back. I want to be able to clean it easily. Cand. 3 Problem Background My problem is that I have too many pairs of shoes and have nowhere to keep them. I need to create somewhere to store them that is easily accessible and will fit in my wardrobe. I can never find the opposite shoe so some shoe storage that displays each pair of shoes and allows them to be easily accessible. This will help to prevent large untidy piles of shoes on my bedroom floor, as seen in the pictures to the right and below this text. I don t want to spend ages choosing a pair of shoes to wear especially if I need to be somewhere. When I am meeting friends for town or going to a party I want to be able to choose a pair of shoes that goes with my clothes and then easily take them out of the shoe storage and wear them. User Group This product could be used by many people but mostly women in particular, especially teenage girls. This is because they are most likely to have the largest amount of shoes. A teenage girl who has lots of pairs of shoes will want them to be easily accessible and visible as if they are going out somewhere they will not want to spend ages picking and finding both shoes especially if they are in large untidy piles alike those in the pictures above and to the left of this text. Design Brief Design and Make some shoe storage to fit in an allocated space in my room. I want to be able to see each pair of shoes and easily take them out and put them back. I want to be able to clean it easily.

Ergonomics I need to research the size of each shoe, the smallest and the largest. I will also have to look at the thickness of each pair to see what size each slot will need to be to hold at least one pair of shoes. The final measurements I will need to research is the size of an allocated space, this will be the bottom of my wardrobe to keep it neat and tidy. Shape I will need to research existing products to see what shapes have been used before to make shoe storage. I can also ask about this in my questionnaire. I can ask if they would want it to store certain types of shoes or all types and whether it needs to fit in an allocated space. Function I need to research how many shoes a consumer would want to fit into shoe storage and whether they would like any other objects to be stored in the same place too. In my research I also need to find out where a potential buyer would keep the storage, if it would have an allocated area of a room. Cost In my questionnaire I will ask consumers how much they are willing to pay for shoe storage and what kind of materials they would like it to be made from, this will help estimate the final cost. Appearance In my questionnaire I need to include a question asking what materials people would want this product to be made out of and whether they would want it to fit into the environment of the room. Storage Would this shoe storage need to be stored anywhere is a question I can ask in my questionnaire as some people may want it to be free standing and others may want it to fit into an allocated space such as a wardrobe.

I looked at and measured a range of my shoes to help me with the measurements for my shoe storage project. I chose five different types and measured the allocated area I would like my shoe storage to go. Here are the measurements Smallest shoe The smallest shoe was a flip-flop measuring 24 cm in length by 10 cm in width and 1cm in height. Sandal The sandal I measured was 23cm in length by 9cm in width. This sandal had a heel so is largest depth was measured to be 5cm. School shoe My school shoe measures 25cm in length by 8cm in width and 6cm in depth. Tallest shoe The tallest shoe was a boot. The boot measured 26.5cm in length by 7cm in width by 46cm in height Allocated area The allocated area I would like my shoe storage to go in is the bottom of my wardrobe. My wardrobe measurements are 48.5 cm in depth and 76 cm in width. The shoe storage could be a range of different heights. Heeled shoe My heeled shoe measured to be 28cm in length, 8cm in width and 12cm in depth.

The idea I am going to look at in more detail is, Idea 1 because it is a practical design that will be easy to develop. It allows many pairs of shoes, of all different styles to be stored in it. Idea 2 This idea is very plain but practical. The wood used to complete this product would fit in to the style of a consumer s room. It allows many shoes fit into each area, all sizes and different shapes and styles. This design is quite thin at the sides so it would fit into many areas however; it is quite wide so this could be a downfall meaning it might not fit in as many areas as it would if it was smaller Idea 1 I like this idea as it gives a very modern effect. However, this design does not allow many shoes to be stored in the allocated space. This design would not help me with my project as it will not hold enough shoes and cannot be moved to a different area if wanted to. Idea 3 Idea 3 This idea is again very practical as the This idea again is very practical shoes can be seen clearly, it would be and simple. This design can help easy to clean and neatly stores each me with my project as this is the pair of shoes. This can help with my right size storage I would need to project as it contains many of the make to fit in the allocated space I specification points. It uses a range of have. This shoe storage allows simple and complicated joints and has many different styles and sizes of a nice finish. This may be a veneer or shoes to fit in to the slots. This a coating of varnish. I could use either shoe cupboard has been varnished of these to also give my storage instead of it having a wood effect good finish. coating or the actual wood itself. Idea 5Idea 5 is a very practical and simple design. It would be very easy to make using pinewood or even a pine effect veneer. The joints will need to be easy to fit together. To make it more appealing the manufacturer could have used a veneer or just a simple coat of varnish. This design would be easy to clean and allows a variety of shoes to be stored in it. The amount of shoes stored in here depends on the size of each shoe meaning lots of shoes could be stored in here. Idea 6 This idea is one of the more modern designs and wouldn t necessarily help me with my project as it is quite large and takes up a lot of room. The design will also make it harder to clean there are a lot of joints and corners on this product. However it does allow each pair of shoes to be displayed and be easily accessible and each container has the ability to store more than one pair of shoes or even other products such as shoe polish, spare laces or heels etc.

The environment that my product is going to go in is an allocated area of my room. This space will be the bottom of my wardrobe seen in the picture on the right. This is where I keep my shoes at the minute however, they look untidy as they are just kept in large piles (as seen in photograph below) and I can never find the pair I am looking for. Hopefully the shoe storage I am going to design and make will allow me to display all of my shoes and easily choose a pair with out taking ages to find both shoes. I need to look into whether there will be any size restrictions or if the product has to be a certain shape or made from a certain material. The measurements for my allocated area can be seen to the far right next to the photo. Measurements The allocated area I would like my shoe storage to go in is the bottom of my wardrobe. My wardrobe measurements are 48.5 cm in depth and 76 cm in width. The shoe storage could be a range of different heights. Style I would like my shoe storage to fit into the style of my room. At the minute I have a range of pine furniture (As seen in the pictures above, below and to the left). This includes my bed, my chest of drawers, my desk and my wardrobe itself therefore I would also like this shoe storage to be made from pine or finished with a pine veneer.

Form: It must be large enough to fit at least ten different places for shoes in it as this is a reasonable amount of shoes for a consumer to have. It needs to fit into an allocated area in my room. In this case this is the bottom of my wardrobe. The storage needs to be able to fit into different areas of a persons room. It must not have sharp edges that could harm the user as this would be against health and safety regulations. It must suit the style of the users room as they won t want the storage to look strange, odd or stand out. Function: It must hold at least ten pairs of shoes otherwise the storage will not be much use. The storage must allow all types of shoe, from flat shoes to boots or even heels, to be stored in it as the user may have a wide range of shoes. It must allow each pair of shoes to be easily accessible so the user can chose a pair of shoes quickly. The storage must also allow each pair of shoes to be visible when choosing which pair to wear. User Requirements: It must be easy for the consumer to clean otherwise consumers may not buy or use the product efficiently. The user may want to change the allocated area it fits into so it must be a suitable design for different areas so the design must be flexible to fit into different areas and must not be too heavy to lift. It could have extra spaces in case a consumer does want to store extra products in it. Costs: It must not be too expensive as consumers will not want to pay a large amount for it. This will be in between as this is the budget the public who answered my questionnaire are prepared to pay. The materials must cost under the budget but be of a high quality suitable for the consumers use. Measurable: It must have areas measuring in between 24 cm by 10 cm to 28 cm by 8 cm as these are the smallest and largest sizes of my shoes. The overall size of the allocated area is 48.5 cm in depth by 76 cm in width as this is size of the bottom of my wardrobe. The size of the shoe storage must be slightly lower than this in order for the project to gently slide into the wardrobe with out getting scratched or scratching the wardrobe itself. Including these measurements the product must not be heavy to carry and therefore will need to be constructed from a light wood.

The picture to the left is a photograph of my cardboard model. I wanted to practice making my final design in cardboard first before I made a model from materials such as balsa wood and acrylic plastic. The picture below is another shot of my card board model however from a different angle. This also shows the drawer fitting. I haven t modelled the shoe poles on this cardboard model as I could not find a The picture above is a photograph of my wooden model which was cut on the laser cutter using my 2D design work to the right. The shot below is also my wooden model, although its from a different angle. The model has been made from balsa wood. The Screen shot above is showing my designing using 2D design. This design was used to cut out my model from the laser cutter. The screen shot below is the other part of my 2D design model. This is the base and shoe poles. They were also cut from balsa wood.

Idea 1 This idea would make the drawer heavier as the sides will be made from MDF. The separation slots would allow me to contain different things in the drawer. It will also look good. Idea 2 This would be quite plain and boring as it is a single piece of wood separating the drawer. On the other hand bigger objects will be able to be kept in here. Final idea I am going to make a sock holder with MDF sides and an acrylic lid. This will cover plastic tubing which will hold the socks in place. The pictures above and below show how the drawer will look. Idea 3 The thicker double lines will be made from wood and the thinner lines will be made from acrylic. These divining lines will make more slots and smaller objects can be kept in here.
