So let's discuss, then, every single vegetable that we have here, its benefits to the body, and how juicing can be this transformative elixir that it is. Absolutely. Well, you know, actually, I did want to mention this too, juicing has been done for a long time, and... Yeah, that's a good point. You know, and you look at, you know, one of the most famous... Jack LaLanne. Jack LaLanne. By the way, Jack LaLanne is one of my heroes. Heroes, for sure. And, you know, and guys like Max Gerson. Oh yeah. You know, who came up with the Gerson therapy. I mean, these are things that have helped heal hundreds of thousands of people, at least, from chronic health conditions. Max Gerson, a guy from Poland that eventually came to New York City, and he was known for having a 98% success rate in treating and curing tuberculosis. Very popular holistic cancer treatments. But they treated everything from heart disease to diabetes to autoimmune illness, and they've seen great results with the benefits of juicing. He had his patients consume 13 glasses of vegetable juice a day. Thirteen? Thirteen. And it was for periods of time, but for a two-week period, 13 glasses of juices. And so, yeah, Gerson has been very popular. Juicing is growing in popularity because it gets results. And I think it's funny, because we all are looking for that magic pill, and we're always looking for the next medical advance. And then we're watching these commercials on television, right? Oh, yeah.
And they're saying, "This is really going to help you with your chronic inflammation in your joints," or whatever. And then you're watching them, the son and the dad play basketball. And you're into this whole thing, and all the... And then there's a female with, like, some sort of banner that they're waving around as they're running, or something. And then they're talking about all the stuff, how it's going to kill... and you might have a sudden blood clot, or go postal at the mall, or something. I mean, it's just like, wow, really? And something you said earlier, it's so true, and this is nature's pharmacy. It is. You know, Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, said, "Let food be thy medicine." "Let food be thy medicine." And so this is real medicine here. Let's start with the broccoli. Oh, it's crazy. Speaking of indoles. Yeah, exactly. Right? Indoles in here, this is what we have, the indole-3-carbinol in broccoli. And we talked about cabbage a little bit. But broccoli actually, one head of broccoli, or one serving of broccoli, which this is about a serving, has more Vitamin C than an orange. So packed with Vitamin C, packed with these cancer-killing nutrients, packed with sulfur. And this is one of the most nutrient-dense vegetables on the planet, and I think great to juice, as well. And so you're actually going to find a little bit of different nutrients in the stalk versus the head here, the leafy area. But broccoli is a great thing to be juicing, especially if you're looking to boost your immune system because of all the Vitamin C, if you're looking to detox, and also, this is packed with things like calcium. Very, one of your best...
Right, big calcium....plant-based sources of calcium. So great bone builder, great for your nerves. Phosphorus. Phosphorus. So broccoli is one of my favorite things to juice, as well. I'm a big lover of broccoli for eating. I'm going to, my true confessions, never juice broccoli, asparagus, or cabbage. So I am going to be the guinea pig today. All right. And I'm going to do this. I'm doing this. Everything else here, I've juiced, though. Let's go, okay, so speaking of asparagus. Asparagus. So this isn't something a whole lot of people juice, but asparagus is beneficial because it boosts your body's glutathione levels. Very good. And as we both know, glutathione is so important. So most antioxidants act extracellularly. Outside of your cell. Glutathione is an intracellular antioxidant. So one of the, it's known as your body's master antioxidant. It protects your body from environmental pollutants and heavy metals, and any sort of intracellular damage. And so asparagus, your number one vegetable here you can consume that will naturally boost glutathione levels. And so we're talking about, if you're going to make a detoxification drink at home... Sure.
...or an antioxidant-boosting drink, juice, asparagus should be on the list. It's probably the number one thing you can consume as far as a vegetable goes for boosting glutathione. Best anti-ager, too, yeah. Yeah, absolutely. If I can say so. You can. We talked a little bit about our friend parsley, and cilantro, also, has a lot of flavor, and is also one of those incredible detoxers. And it has a unique flavor, I think. It does. Well, I'm a huge fan of Mexican food. So am I. I'm a huge fan of cilantro flavor. So I throw this in a lot of stir fries, but I juice it as well. And we mentioned detoxifying juices here with broccoli and asparagus, but the king of detoxifying juices may just be cilantro when it comes to heavy metals. It's been shown to detoxify your body from lead, from mercury, from arsenic that's found in a lot of foods that have been shipped over... Cadmium. Sure....from China. And so cilantro is a great heavy metal detoxifier. So again, if you're going through a detoxification program, cilantro is definitely something you should consider juicing. But not too much, because you can overdo it, and you'll get sick on that. I will say, what it binds to the heavy metal, and you excrete it. So you basically pee it out. You do.
Which is good for people to know that it's not... when it's pulling from your organs and pulling from your fat. That's where we store all these lovely heavy metals. And our brains. That's one of the biggest places to store. So if you have a foggy brain and you're not thinking very clearly, get a test and find out how many heavy metals you have in there, and then start taking care of it naturally with these kind of juices. And if you're starting, I mean, just start off with a small handful here. I mean, you can start off with this much. You know, it doesn't take a lot. This much, and then work your way up slowly over time. But yeah, just start off with a little bit when you're juicing cilantro. That's a good idea. Then, of course, now, this is one of my favorites. This is just, this is an English cucumber, and it is really juicy, and it really, really helps to... the flavor is very fresh and tasty, and it helps when you're doing the more bitter greens. I think it's a big helper. Boom. Yeah, cucumbers are... I used to wonder, when I was a kid, I would watch these movies where women would put, like... Cucumbers on their face?...cucumbers on their eyes, and I'd always wonder, why do they have cucumbers on their face? And I found out later on that it's because cucumber's very high in minerals like silica. And silica is one of the number one minerals that can help increase collagen production, really help with healthy skin, smoothing out wrinkles. And so you can put it on your face if you like, but we like juicing it. Yes. And it's really packed with minerals. And it's one of the base juices most people use. So you're not going to get necessarily a lot of juice out of something like broccoli, but the great thing about cucumber, bang for your buck wise, if you're juicing more on a budget, cucumber maybe is the best thing you can juice for getting the most juice out of it. And as we're talking about all these vegetables, you remember that we're taking a lot. Like, this is a lot of cucumber. Nobody's going to sit down and eat a whole cucumber.
But you could juice a whole cucumber. So it's so massively important that all your vegetables are organic. You don't want to be juicing 14 different pesticides and putting those in your body. That could be just as detrimental. So it's really, I have to throw that out there, and I know a lot of people, "Oh, so expensive." But again, we've offered options on how to get [inaudible 00:07:25] that. So now, our friend also, the celery. Which, again, phosphorus, calcium, lots of minerals. That's what helps you build your bones. They look like skeletal bones, right? Yeah? They do, actually. Femurs, right? Yeah, they do. So celery adds a little salt and a little flavor. What's up with the celery leaves, though? I hear they're poison. I don't think they're poison. Right? I think they're healthy. You know what can happen? If you isolate any compound in certain foods, I'm sure they can come up with some sort of random study where it's not good for somebody with something. But, you know, there are a lot of articles and even studies providing that juicing celery's great and beneficial. In fact, there's recent research showing it helps with gout. That and cherry juice. Cherry juice. So if you use celery juice and cherry juice, if you just juice celery and cherry juice for 24 hours, your gout pain will be gone in 24 hours if you do a juice cleanse one day with celery and cherry juice. It can happen that fast. It's so, it's massively anti-inflammatory. And I would even say, even if you don't have a diagnosis of gout, but you have a lot of joint pain, it would be very beneficial, as well, right?
Yeah, it's great, it's got a good flavor. You know, I wanted to mention one of the other things here with cucumber, we kind of mentioned with the benefits of skin. It's also good for thickening your hair. Oh, that's true. Silica is really important for actually thickening your nails, hair, skin. It's great for that, too. Sign me up. I need more cucumber. And then, of course, we have our lovely carrots. And everybody knows... I'm going to show you something. Everybody knows that a carrot is really good for your eyes. If you look at a carrot this way, though, it looks like an iris. It does. Right? I mean, it's like God's pharmacy. He's saying, "Okay, well, there you go. Here's your carrot." Right? And it shows you right there that it's good for you. Well, let's talk about the beta carotene stuff. Well, carrots are actually, of all the things people are known to juice, carrot juice is the number one selling and the most popular juice. And I think there are a few reasons for that. One, I think the flavor. It's great. It's a fantastic flavor to any juice. Also, it is very nutrient-rich, especially with phytonutrients and antioxidants. So if you're trying to slow the aging process... And as you mentioned earlier, it's great for the eyes, with the beta carotene. You know, beta carotene and different types of carotenoids and antioxidants are, we mentioned, great for the eyes. Also great for the skin. Skin. There was a study done on carrots showing it reduces radiation, or your chance of getting a sunburn, or the damage from sun. So if you're out there running, getting...
Skin tougher. Yeah, so it's a natural way to......tone your skin, darken your skin. So, yeah, carrots have tremendous benefits. In fact, this was the number one juice protocol in the Gerson therapy. And we've mentioned Gerson therapy. And the reason why Max Gerson loved it so much and why it's recommended, and it's the number one juice out there today, is it's beneficial for your eyes, for anti-aging, but also detoxifying the liver. Liver, right. There are certain nutrients in there that support liver detox. And your liver is your main organ that's going to deal with environmental pollutants, and pesticides, and all these chemicals we're exposed to on a daily basis. So carrot juice is the most popular because the great taste, plus it's got as many benefits or more than most other vegetables for juicing. And you really can't overdo beta carotene. Beta carotene is the precursor to Vitamin A. Your body will make the Vitamin A that it needs from the beta carotene. The worst thing that can happen is your skin will turn a little orange. It's like a built-in tan. I mean, come on, look at it, don't complain about that. All right, so you talked a little bit about cabbage, and that cabbage juicing is a good healing tonic. But what else do we need to know about cabbage and the benefits of it? Well, cabbage, the big thing we mentioned earlier was it healing ulcers and being great for your digestive system.
And healing leaky gut. You know, leaky gut is a condition... Everybody has....so many people are experiencing. If you've got food intolerance issues, or allergies, or arthritis, or any, or bloating, or any of those issues, those are linked to a condition known as leaky gut. And there are certain foods you've got to get rid of. Most of us know gluten can cause issues there. Sure. But you've got to do more than just remove certain foods from your diet. You've got to add foods in that support the healing process. Sure. And cabbage and cabbage juice is so beneficial at healing your digestive tract, and also it contains sulfur. This is very important for detoxification and for joint health. Especially if you're trying to rebuild cartilage and reduce arthritis and different types of joint pain, cabbage is fantastic for that. You're absolutely right. And again, me being the brave soul that I am, I'm volunteering... You're going to try it today. I'm going to try it. Now, I'm a kale lover, and I've have always loved kale. When I was a caterer back in the olden days... The olden days? In the olden days, yeah. This is when I was in my 20s. I had a successful catering business. We used kale all the time, and bought it by the case. And we used it for garnish. And once we were done using it, we threw it away. Now, and what I would say when somebody would say, you know, "What is that?" I'd say it was kale, it's only good for garnish. Tastes like crap.
And I'd say that, you know? And then, years later, fast-forward years later, we are living on this little farm in Rutherford County, North Carolina, and there's all this kale growing in the garden. And so I said, "You know, I'm going to take my hand at trying to, making some kale." There you go. And I made it, and I was so delicious. Oh, yeah. And I thought, all those years I threw out all that kale. Oh, yeah. And this is delicious stuff. You know, kale has a little bit of sweetness to it, surprisingly. It does. It's got great flavor. And doing that with something like cucumber and carrot juice. I mean, it tastes really, really good. It does. And some people, I've seen it quoted that kale is king in the vegetable kingdom in terms of having the most... Nutrients....nutrient density of any vegetable. We've talked about Vitamin K and calcium. It is so high, those nutrients. Lutein, xanthine, those nutrients that are important for lowering cholesterol, supporting eye health. And so it's a great vegetable to juice. It is a great vegetable to juice. And, I mean, there's basically nothing that it's not going to help in your body. And of course, we've also got... you know what these are. We're from the South. Come on.
Oh, yeah. Talk to me. Collard greens. Look at that. Aren't they gorgeous? Yeah, those are beautiful, beautiful leaves there. Aren't they? And you're going to have a lot of similar benefits between our rainbow chard, the kale, and... but there is a little bit of difference. You know, some of these, I believe this is a little bit higher in folate and certain B vitamins. And I think it's good to rotate your vegetables. It is. When I'm juicing, I don't do the exact same juice every time. In fact, I typically rotate between, I do chard, next time I'm there I do kale, next time I do collard greens. Sure. So I kind of... You can even do lettuces. Oh, absolutely. Romaine, yeah. Romaine's great. Some of those bitter herbs. There are a lot of different benefits. And so it's good to rotate your juices. So try all of them. Yeah, it is. And when you rotate your vegetables, basically you're giving your body a rest from one or the other. And I will tell you that the chard has kind of an earthy flavor, right along the lines of... oh, look, segue. What's this? Beets. A little beet. This is a golden beet. Isn't that cute? So golden beets are another thing that's a wonderful detoxer. And we're going to talk all about this, and I think we should make something.
Let's do it. All right. I like it.
