Isolated rural properties traditionally set aside an area as a burial ground for the property occupiers and nearby family members. The Worth family graves are well kept and prominently visible examples of that tradition. They are important records of Coolongolook s history and the Worth family history. The headstones (or at least the later headstones) are good examples of their era and are generally in good condition. Level of Significance Local 1

2 Designer NA DESCRIPTION Builder/ maker Physical Description NA. some stones record the maker s name, for example Hanson, Lewis and Co, Sydney. The graveyard is a rectangular area approximately 14m x 14m fenced with a white timber rail fence of sawn hardwood and set in grazing land in what has possibly been the house paddock to the original dwelling. The later graves are in generally good condition but earlier graves have possibly been lost. Graves face east. Physical condition and Archaeological potential Generally good but earlier graves possibly no longer identifiable. Archaeological potential would be low to moderate as no other activity has been carried out other than the burials. 3 Historical SHR criteria (a) APPLICATION OF CRITERIA The graves are historically significant in their relationship to early settlement in the Coolongolook area. They record the way of life in an isolated rural area at that time. Historical association SHR criteria (b) Associated with the Worth family, who were early settlers in the Coolongolook area. Aesthetic SHR criteria (c) No particular aesthetic is noted but the graveyard is a highly visible landmark on Curreeki Creek Road. Social SHR criteria (d) Is important within the local community. Technical/Research SHR criteria (e) The graves record the way of life in isolated area at that time and specifically I the Coolongolook area. Burial grounds and the information they provide are always of interest to the local historian and family historian for the information about the area, the family and the way of life at the time. Rarity SHR criteria (f) Once relatively common in isolated areas but the exact location of many has been lost over the years. Representativeness SHR criteria (g) They are representative of local private burial grounds. Integrity The historical and relationship to the Worth family is established by the headstones alone but family history research is required. Although close to the Pacific Highway the graveyard is in a relatively quite rural area and the setting retains its context to the family and to the area s history. 3
