Orchard remnants. 6.0 RESEARCH INFORMATION This appears to be the home originally ofj. R. Sutherby, but a precise date is so far unknown. The house may date from the era. Some information about the property, some of which has been corroborated, is contained in the reminiscences of Frank Sutherby, son of]. R. Sutherby and first white child to be born in the municipality, reponed in the Ladner Optimist, 17 August 1950: "Frank Sutherby and his younger brother Fred carried on their father's farm for many years after he died in the early 1900's [sic]. Then Frank bought out his brother, who moved to Salmon Arm, where he died. Frank sold his place in 1925 to a man named Swanson, who had come to B.C. from the Orkney Isles in Scotland. The portion of the farm on the nonh side of the Trunk Road now is farmed by John Friesen." Donald Luxton & ASSOCiates - 45

R Sutherby, reponed in The Delta Times, 21 May 1910, repons, "John R Southerby [sic], one of the oldest and best known of ~he pioneers of the Delta died at his home in Ladner on Wednesday after a lingering illness extending over a number of years. The late Mr. Southerby was 84 years of age and was a native of England. He left England almost 50 years ago and spent a number of years in New York state, where two of his daughters are residing at the present time. Mr. Southerby was one of the pioneers of the Delta having taken up land here 38 years ago [= 1872] and has resided here almost continuously ever since." The Weekly Optimist, 02 November 1922, page one, contains the obituary of "Mrs. Emma Huson [sic] Sutherby, who died on Saturday, October 28th, at the Sutherby home in East Delta." "Sutherby, ]. R" is listed in Heads of Household in British Columbia in 1874, by the B. C. Genealogical Society, Pat Viben, editor, as "Farmer, South Arm, FR." At Boundary Bay Cemetery, the headstone for Frank Sutherby, includes the words, "First white child born in Delta." The Mainland Guardian, 25 June 1873 records the birth of a son to J. R Sutherby. The Assessment Records confirm that the property was sold to a man named Roben Swanson in However, it appears that he was another absentee landlord and never lived here, his address being Vancouver.
