History Know the history of the area in which you re researching. County origins and boundary changes Migration paths Follow neighbors Visit courthouses and archives EVERYTHING IS NOT ONLINE 78

WHAT IS ONLINE? Free or Pay? Tennessee Genealogical Library Local library Family History Center Ancestry.com, WorldVital Records.Com, Footnote.com, Heritage Quest. 79

BEST PLACES TO START ONLINE

LOOK AT FAMILY TREES DONE BY OTHERS No source = no fact Use trees by others as clues, not fact Stuck? Follow siblings or cousins Spelling is never consistent understand soundex and poor handwriting Who gave that information to the census taker? 81

Strategy Census records and family connections Period in history war time? Relocate because of occupation? Death of parent where are children? Remarriage of parent? Elderly parent living with child? 82

Interviews Written & recorded interviews of living relatives First write date, name of interviewee, name of interviewer, place of interview Don t just ask names, dates, places 83

Interviews (cont.) Ask about physical appearance and personality Ask maiden names (name on marriage certificate could be previous married name) Don t push; don t rush Don t believe everything you hear. 84

Interviews (cont.) Ask about old letters, photographs, scrapbooks, baby books, report cards, deeds, mortgages, army discharge papers, diaries Beware of cousin as a salutation in letters. It s those things outside names, dates and places that make your ancestors real people. 85

Forms Most genealogy programs can print blank forms aspx?rc=locale%7e&us=0 oad.html 86

Odds and Ends - Some Other Things to Think About 87

Podcasts Easy through itunes Genealogy Guys Podcast Genealogy Gems Podcast Computer/Tech Podcasts History etc etc etc 88

RSS Feeds & Newsletters & Blogs & Mailing Lists Several options Google is easy Eastman s Online Genealogy Newsletter Dear Myrtle Genealogy Blog Many mailing lists at Rootsweb 89

Organizing All This Information Develop a system that works for you Color coded? Folders Three ring binders? 90

Organization Discuss how I m organized. 91

Terms & Spelling Transcript word for word Abstract summary Spelling genealogy Spelling - cemetery 92

Sources Primary versus Secondary Sources 93

Primary Source A record that was created at the time of an event by a person who had reasonably close knowledge of the event ex: a marriage certificate would be a primary source for a marriage date, name of spouse etc, but would be a secondary source for date of birth (since this record is NOT created at the time of birth). A birth certificate would be a primary source for a birth date. A death certificate would be a primary source for a death date, but a secondary source for the names of the parents of the deceased. 94

Create A Web Site Great way to make connections with others interested in same line Remember to protect info for living individuals (their privacy AND their feelings) 95

Naming Traditions Varies by country of origin first son named after father etc Some countries follow maternal line as opposed to paternal line for carrying on last name Some last names add letters (ex: - son) 96

Write for Original Records Use indexes and secondary sources, but write for the original records and try to find as many primary sources as possible. 97

Copies Remember to write ON a copy where it came from and the date received/copied. 98

Handwriting Old handwriting f for s etc [ex: will see Tenneffee] Capital L and S look alike Capital I and J look alike Many sites on the net for handwriting help 99

Calendar Changes 1752 Julian to Gregorian calendar 2 Sep 1752 was followed by 14 Sep 1752 (might see dual dates on records (ex: 1756/1757 does NOT mean between 1756 & 1757 ) Quaker dating system year did not change in January. It changed in March (ex: 3 of the seventh month would mean the third of September, not July) 100

Non-US Research many sites for each country [ex: for England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man] 101

Societies JOIN!! TN Genealogical Society Surname Associations Local User s Groups DAR many, many, many.. Look at under Societies and Groups 102

DNA Find a study (various sites online) Learn about DNA How will it help your search? then: [The following items are 1) letter written by my great great grandfather as he went to get his son, who had just been captured during the civil war, out of the prisoner of war camp.
