SOUTHBOURNE is an ecclesiastical parish (including Nutbourne, Prinsted, Hermitage and Gosden Green), formed Feb. 26, 1878, out of Westbourne, its western limit being a small stream or bourne called the Emm, separating it from Hampshire: it is about 1 ½ miles east from Emsworth station on the Brighton and Portsmouth section of the London, Brighton and South Coast railway and 6 west from Chichester, in the South Western division of the county, Chichester rape, petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Boxgrove (second division) and archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester. The church of St. John the Evangelist, erected in 1876, at a cost of about 3,500, is of stone in the Early English style, and has a tower, with spire, containing one bell: there are 350 sittings. The register dates from February, The living is a vicarage, net yearly value 198, with 3 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the rector of Westbourne, and held since 1893 by the Rev. William John Blight Wonnacott M.A. of Queen s College, Oxford. There is a Bible Christian Mission hall at Nutbourne. The principal landowners are Lord Leconfield, the Earl of Dartmouth, G. Wonnacott F.R.I.B.A, architect, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, quasi-transepts and at the south-east angle a tower with spire: there are sittings for 500 persons. The Dell (Thurrock, Essex) - for Alfred Russell Wallace the naturalist and explorer Buildings Designed Festing Grove Nelson Road Albert Road Wesleyan Church and schoolrooms 1900 Albert Road Primitive Methodist Central Hall 1901 Victoria Road Congregational Church (now United Reform) The Hop-picking Season, commonly known as Hopping lasted for about three weeks. At such times the Hop-grounds of Farnham alone would furnish employment to upwards six thousand men, women and children. These all had to be accommodated and in May 1870 Hoppers (perhaps aptly named) Barracks were approved in Red Lion Lane. But in September 1872 Mr. Thomas Wonnacott, a West Street Architect, who felt rather strongly about all things of a sleazy nature drew attention to the powers that be and to the general public of the herding together of old and young, married and single, male and female and to the ensuing indecency and immorality. In October Mr. Wonnacott explained the principles of the Earth Closet and advocated its use as an experiment in a poor part but it was not taken up.
