2 Descendancy Research Why do descendancy research? Your ascendancy research is DONE. Beginners can do descendancy research. The tools are mature enough to do this at home. It s really a lot of fun, bordering on addictive.

3 Descendancy Research How do I do descendancy research? It s easy! You can do it on FamilySearch without additional tools or products. After this class, following these steps, you should be able to find new cousins in less than 2 hours.

4 Our 4 Steps 1. Pick a Great Great Great... Grandparent Use place, birth date, and name to guide your choice. 2. Search For Their Descendants Find someone in a historical record that is missing from Family Tree! 3. Attach Records and Add Missing People Use tools to attach the source and add the missing people to Family Tree. 4. Reserve and Share Names Prepare, print, and take names to the temple.

5 Step 1: Pick a GGG... Grandparent 1 What are you looking for? PLACE + BIRTHDATE + NAME We will target US descendants born between 1830 and 1890 because these descendants will appear in US census records. These records are ideal for beginning genealogists.

7 Easiest Dates 1 Targeting descendants born from 1830 to Must select their ancestors (go further back!). US census shows relationships starting in Pick an ancestor prior to church membership. Pick Someone Around 1800!

9 How to Pick a GGG...Grandparent Open FamilySearch and use the Fan Chart. The outer ring shows gg grandparents. Scan gg grandparents using person card. Look 1st at Place, then Time, then Name. If needed, extend a line to go further back. Re-root on target or open in a new tab. Pick Your GGG Grandparent! 1

27 Is This Record Our Person?? Examine Dates, Places, Names, Relationships Look for problems. How many facts align? Are there multiple records? Are the conflicting facts? YOU ARE MAKING A GENEALOGICAL CONCLUSION. BE DELIBERATE. 2

29 Step 3: Attach and Add People There is a tool that will quickly attach this record and add the missing people. 3

30 Attach the Record Examine the evidence. Make note of what matches and what doesn t. Reconcile these differences. Use other records, etc. Write a good Reason Statement, one that can be reused for all subsequent attaches (Saves time). Address conflicts and concerns. 3

31 Continue to Attach and Add You can Attach the record to those that already exist in Family Tree. You can Add people mentioned in the record that are not in Family Tree! 3

33 ATTENTION: Pay attention to those born within 110 years. It s possible they may still be living. Additional research may be required before adding them as deceased to Family Tree. 3

34 Your Vineyard Pick a place to work in your family tree. Become familiar with that place. Become familiar with that time. Develop the family narrative. Get to know these people. Toil and improve the family tree for these people. Build out from there. Don t forget the women. They re harder to track. Hot Tip #3
