1 Finding information on neighbourhoods and census tracts Large urban areas such as Saskatoon are classified as Census Metropolitan Areas (CMAs) by Statistics Canada, the federal statistical agency. CMAs include the main urban core and the surrounding area influenced by it. CMAs are subdivided into Census Tracts (CTs). The City of Saskatoon is a Census Subdivision. See: Census tracts are geographical units defined by Statistics Canada and are assigned codes. Neighbourhoods are geographical units defined by municipalities. Neighbourhood and census tract boundaries match only approximately. See attached chart and map with neighbourhoods and corresponding CTs. 1. Retrieving information by neighbourhood: a. 2 Make a selection in the window highlighted above in red to get information by neighbourhood. For example: b. Community View Collaboration: [ Click on the Data and Documents link to access. 2

3 Choose a topic from the left-hand menu: for example, Demographics. Select a sub-topic under Demographics in the left-hand frame: for example, Household. We are going to retrieve data on Household Size. To do so, click on the link labelled Household Size in the right-hand frame. 3

4 Use left hand menu to select options such as geography and year. In the left-hand menu, click on Geography. Now select the option Saskatoon Residential Neighbourhoods under Available Geographies. Click on the Add >> button to add your selection to the Selected Geographies list. 4

5 Saskatoon Residential Neighbourhoods gets added to the list. Scroll down and click the Apply button to save changes. To select year (for example, 2006), click Years in the left-hand menu. Choose the option Specific Years in the right-hand panel. Now select the desired year (2006). Click on the Apply button to save changes. 5

6 To view the data, click on Data in the left-hand menu. 6

7 The data table will be displayed. You can scroll through the data or choose to download the data file as an Excel file. 7

8 2. Retrieving information by Census Tract a. One tract at a time (2006 Census Only). If you know the CT number, go to Census Tract (CT) Profiles. Option 3 allows one to search by CT. In order to search, one has to know the CMA code in addition to the CT code. You can view the list of CMAs by clicking on the link titled CMA/CA code and census tract name. 8

9 For example, in Saskatoon CMA (725) we can search for the CT ( ) by concatenating the code as The data for the CT (0007.0) is displayed along with data for Saskatoon CMA and Saskatchewan. You can download the data as Excel file by clicking on the CSV link. 9

10 b. Retrieving information on multiple CTs. The Canadian Census Analyser provides access to data by CT going back to Go to the library website at: If you are off-campus login to your library account using NSID. Under the Articles and Databases tab, search for Canadian Cenus Analyser. Click on the [details] link. 10

11 Click on the Connect to Canadian Census Analyser link. On the website of the Canadian Census Analyser, click on the desired year. For example,

12 On the next page, scroll down until you see the heading: Profile of Census Tracts (cumulative). Click the link. On the next page, select Saskatoon from the list of CMAs. 12

13 Select the desired indicator. For example, Average number of persons per household. Ignore Steps 3 and 4 and accept the default setting for Steps 5 and 6. Click on the Submit button to view the data. 13

14 The data will be displayed on your screen. See attached chart for the list of CTs and corresponding neighbourhoods. c.
