3 Importance of the Census Congressionally mandated by Article 1, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution First Census was in 1790 Why do we conduct the Census? Congressional Apportionment Redistricting Data is used to allocate billions of dollars in federal funds 3

4 Partnership Program PR side of the Census : Awareness is our job! Create partnerships with various types organizations to help us get the word out! Local governments, community based organizations, non-profits, public & private schools, faith-based organizations, etc. Always searching for Trusted Voices Currently there are 76 members of the Partnership Program. As of today, there about 6,400 Active Partner Organizations in the Boston Region Over 1,000 in CT 4

8 Complete Count Committees CCCs serve as extensions of the Partnership Program to plan and implement local outreach and promotional efforts. They are made up of key influential community members representing different population groups and areas. As of today, we have approximately 80 Active CCCs in the Boston Region 10 in CT with more forming 8

9 Language Assistance Program Targeted mailing of bilingual Spanish/English questionnaire. Questionnaires display both English and Spanish Telephone Questionnaire Assistance (TQA) telephone numbers. Bilingual TQA operators available in the 5 primary non-english languages. Language Assistance Guides available online in 59 languages and through TQA and Questionnaire Assistance Centers Language Identification Flashcards provided to all enumerators and Questionnaire Assistance Center Representatives. Be Counted forms available in 6 primary languages

10 Be Counted Program Site Be Counted Program is for individuals who think they were excluded from the Census. A box of questionnaires will be located at these sites Runs from late March 2010 to mid-april

11 Questionnaire Assistance Center Questionnaire Assistance Center Location to assist persons with completing of questionnaire Answer General Questions Respond if they did not receive a questionnaire Provide special language assistance Staffed by Census Bureau employees Runs from late Feb to late April, 2010 As of today, over 800 of the Active partner orgs. In the Boston Region have agreed to provide space for a BC/QAC. Over 100 in CT. 11

12 Census in the Schools Goal of CIS is to teach students about the 2010 Census and have them bring the benefits and importance back to their parents Scholastic, Inc. has created lesson plans for teachers and activities and interactive sites for various grade levels All lesson plans are aligned to national standards Every principal of public and private schools in CT has received CIS kits Most principals in our Target Cities have been visited by Partnership staff (teacher meetings, PTO meeting, events, and use of CIS lesson plans). 12

13 College and University Initiative (aka Census on Campus ) This initiative is designed to reach out to the hundreds of Colleges and Universities in the Boston Region We currently have 297 liaisons in Boston Region C & U s! These liaisons will help educate and motivate all Residential Life offices and student housing organizations on (and off) their campuses. 13

18 Child Care and Development Block Grant Department of Health and Human Services $2,051,200,000 in FY 07 Based on a formula that takes into account the number of children below the age of 5, per capita income and the number of children receiving assistance through the School Lunch program. 18

22 American Community Survey Social and Economic information every year rather than just once a decade Will take the place of the census long form At the start of each month, the questionnaire is mailed to a scientifically selected sample of households in counties throughout the Nation.
