3 March 2018 RootsTech Innovators Revisited By Bill Wheeler By the time that you read this, RootsTech 2018 should be underway. Each year, one of the core events of RootsTech is the Innovation Showdown where entrepreneurs compete for over $100,000 in prizes. We wanted to take just a moment to review the 2017 winners and where they are twelve months later. OldNewsUSA: OldNewsUSA won top honors at RootsTech The Android mobile app allows genealogists and historians to quickly access stories in historical newspapers. While RevGenea software anticipated having a release for Apple devices in 2017, the beta release on ios is only now becoming available. The software is free in the Google Play store. QromaTag: Second place of the Innovation Showdown went to QromaTag. Ever look at a photograph and wonder what the story was behind the picture? That was the inspiration for the ios software that allows the user to record audio into a photo. While there were plans to release an Android version in 2017, to date the software is only available in ios. The software costs $9.99. Double Match Triagulator: Third place winner was Double Match Triangulator which is a Windows-based software that reads two or more DNA segment match files and identifies the segments that overlap. While the software only runs on Windows, the resulting Excel file can be viewed on any device that runs Excel. A lifetime license is $40 at MCIGS Newest Book Purchase By Claudia Conroy On the request of a member, we have purchased the book Planning a Future for Your Family s Past. The author, Marian Burk Wood, has included information on how to take an inventory of your collection, methods to sort your documents and artifacts so they will be distributed to your choice of heirs, and writing a genealogical will. The last sections of the book include links to online sources and copies of forms to aid in this process. The paperback will be placed in the Crystal Lake Public Library and be allowed to circulate. Gen 202: Beyond the Basics After Ancestry, after Ellis Island, after the easy stuff Liz Ross April 12, 2018 Tips, techniques and suggestions for keeping the tree growing and finding the rocks that you want to look under. Reading closely. Thinking out-of-the-box. Mind-stretching and creative thinking and keeping all the information straight as you look at a million (or maybe only several hundred sources). Liz is a genealogy professional Researcher, Writer, Lecturer, & Consultant. She lectures in the Chicago area and writes "2nd Saturday Genealogy." Her lectures are designed for beginning and intermediate researchers but will be helpful to the person who has "done some researching" and now wants to be more thorough. She writes a column for CAGGNI and is a member of NGS, APG and numerous state and local societies. Cook County s Social Worker for the Unclaimed Dead Rebeca Perrone May 10, 2018 Rebeca Perrone, the Cook County Medical Examiner s first indigent coordinator, handles 700+ cases a year in her role as a Social Worker for the dead. Using a list of names of unclaimed remains, Rebeca searches for potential next of kin, hoping to reunite them with their loved ones. Her stories reflect how basic genealogy techniques can be used to find living relatives. Originally from Algonquin, after studying sociology and criminal justice at Loyola University, Rebeca worked for the Indiana Department of Child Services, investigating abuse and neglect claims. She longed to be a detective but not a police officer, so she decided to change jobs and search for living relatives of the unclaimed indigent, so that they might help arrange for a dignified burial.
