4 FamilySearch To Discontinue Its Microfilm Distribution Services This announcement shouldn t surprise any genealogists. The end of microfilm has been predicted for years. Microfilm and microfiche has become harder and harder to purchase. Most of the manufacturers have stopped producing microfilm and microfiche so the companies and non-profits that release information on film have been forced to abandon the media. Over 1.5 million microfilms (ca. 1.5 billion images) have been digitized by FamilySearch, including the most requested collections based on microfilm loan records worldwide. In addition, many records that FamilySearch has not yet published can be found online on partner or free archive websites. FamilySearch plans to finish microfilm digitization by (Continued on pg. 5) The TGS website is up and running. It is an ongoing project so keep checking it out. There is definitely a new-look to the site but is very forward-looking and user friendly. I have set up the PayPal for new and renewal memberships. It is available on the Membership page. The Members Only section will be available to current members. I am working now to set up your passwords and usernames. There are a couple of extra sections I am adding. but they are going to be a surprise for the time being. If you would like to see any information area added to the new site, please me with your thoughts. I will be glad to take your suggestion into consideration. Bottom line is please have patience if you run into a non-functioning link or address. But let me know so it can be corrected. Enjoy the new site and let us know what you think. - Dorothy We re Still Waiting! 5 The following is an extract from the announcement from FamilySearch: On September 1, 2017, FamilySearch will discontinue its microfilm distribution services. (Last day to order films will be August 31, 2017.) The change is the result of FamilySearch s progress in its microfilm digitization efforts and the obsolescence of microfilm technology. Online access to digital images of records allows FamilySearch to reach many more people, faster and more efficiently. FamilySearch is a global leader in historic records preservation and access, with billions of the world s genealogical records in its collections. The remaining microfilms should be digitized by the end of 2020, and all new records from its ongoing global efforts are already using digital camera equipment. Family history centers will continue to provide access to relevant technology, premium subscription services, and digital records, including restricted content not available at home. You can read the full announcement at with FAQs about the change available at bit.ly/2s6ovo6. --Eastman s Online Genealogy Newsletter, June 26, 2017 Saturdays; 10:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. March through August Workshops will meet at Schusterman-Benson Library 3333 E 32 nd Pl. 6 Remains of a Little Girl The following is republished from Eastman s Online Genealogy Newsletter. The article written by Joseph Serna was first published in the Los Angeles Times, May 10, Remains of a Little Girl in a Forgotten Casket are Identified This story combines detective work, genealogy, DNA, and public records. A little girl about 3 years old died and was buried about 140 years ago in an unmarked metal casket in a wealthy San Francisco neighborhood. When workers recently discovered her elaborate coffin beneath a concrete slab, there were no markings or gravestone to say who she was. A team of scientists, amateur sleuths and history buffs worked tirelessly to solve the central question in this Bay Area mystery: Who was the little girl in the casket? She has now been identified. The girl s DNA was matched to that of a relative now living in San Rafael. The story of the investigation is intriguing. Investigators found a scale plan of the cemetery development in 1865 at the Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley. That provided an approximate location of the grave. Thanks to the Internet and a culture of open records that existed from the 17th century to the 1960s, amateur genealogists were able to tap centuries of records of censuses, births, marriages, properties and deaths to trace up and down each candidates family tree. The whole effort took three people 3,000 hours, said Elissa Davey, who spearheaded the search for Edith s identity. You can read the entire story in an article by Joseph Serna in the Los Angeles Times web site at: lat.ms/2q4oflt Genealogy News You are among the first to know: Liz Walker, Genealogist Librarian, will teach a Beginning Genealogy Research Class beginning in September.
