Room 2501 Coit Road, Plano, Texas e-news, Issue 12 2 Challenges of African American Genealogy Research Larry will provide information on how he started his Journey of family research and identify some of the roadblocks and actions taken to overcome those obstacles. This presentation is designed to provide the-how to, tools and provide motivation for new and seasoned Genealogist. African American Research DNA Volunteer Project Administrators Conference 3 Larry W. McCarty is a native Texas, born in Houston and raised in Midland. He served our county in Vietnam as a member of the U.S. Army and retired from IBM after thirty years. Larry is a guest speaker on Culture and Communications of African Americans at the University of Texas at Dallas. He has participated in the ongoing Archaeological Dig at the Farm of Johan A. Quarrels homestead in Florida, Mo. Larry was the inaugural speaker at the dedication of the Huck Finn Freedom Center and Museum in Samuel Clemens boyhood hometown of Hannibal, Mo. This was a dedication to Jim, a character in Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. Larry has been a quest speaker on Cable TV during Black history Month, presented at multiple local library events, genealogical societies and family reunions across our state of Texas. News of his research has been published in the Hannibal Courier-Post, Hannibal Mo, the Illinois Quincy Herald-Wig, the Lake Gazette of Monroe, Mo and the Irving Rambler-Irving Texas. CCGS received a certificate and a monetary award. Several CCGS members attended the Texas State Genealogical Society in Austin last weekend. It was a well-attended event despite the bad weather. At the annual awards banquet CCGS was excited to learn we won second place for our enewsletter. Several We re planning a special 45 th anniversary celebration and are seeking memorabilia from those past years. See you Wednesday night!

2 African American Research One of the most asked questions is how to I research my African American roots. You research much the same way anyone would and use many of the same records. Many African Americans were Free People of Color as well as enslaved. The National Archives has a great guide to assist in African American research. Larry W. McCarty the CCGS speaker for November will provide some great information about how to research and access the records. Several generations of a family are pictured on Smith s Plantation, South Carolina, ca (Library of Congress) Another website I located was Old photographs of African Americans Unknown Faces (OPOAA). You can view the photographs at the following link: Freedmen s Bureau Records One of the largest and most extensive collections is record of the Freedmen's Bureau. The records date from its work between 1865 and They cover African American life in the post-civil War and Reconstruction eras. These records present the genealogist and social historian with an unequaled wealth of information that extends the reach of black family studies. Documents such as local censuses, marriage records, and medical records provide freed people's full names and former masters; Federal censuses through 1860 listed slaves only statistically under the master's household. No name indexes are available at this time, but the documents can be rewarding, particularly since they provide full names, residences, and, often, the names of former masters and plantations. 3 FTDNA Project Administrators 15 th Annual Conference FamilyTreeDNA is readily preparing for the 15 th annual Project Administrators Conference November th. FamilyTreeDNA is the only genealogy DNA testing company to have volunteer project administrators, providing the administrators with an annual educational and sharing session each year. Administrators from around the globe will be attendance and they have several well known presenters including Dr. Spencer Wells and CeCe Moore. CeCe is a consultant on several of the genealogy shows and is one of the administrators for the Adoption project. Have you tried out the new MyGroups feature? You may access MyGroups by logging into your assigned personal page kit number. If you click on the MyGroups link it will take you to another page where you can post messages or photos related to your ancestors to help you in your research. You can post queries related to your ancestors. The CCGS DNA MyGroups is set to private display and is only viewable by our project members. 5 News Continued Colonial North American Project CCGS enewsletter Wins 2 nd Place Harvard has digitized 150,000 images of diaries, journals, notebooks, and other rare documents from the 17th and 18th centuries. If you have Colonial ancestors you will want to conduct a search of the recently launched website of the Colonial North American Project. To date the database includes 150,000 images of diaries, journals, notebooks, and other rare documents from the 17th and 18th centuries. The University endeavors to digitize all its collections. The collection is available free of charge, and is unique because of the scale. According to a 2011 survey, the material is scattered through 12 repositories from Houghton Library to the Harvard University Archives to Loeb Music Library. The documents provide a glimpse into the life of North American colonies through the eyes of real people who wrote about family affairs and daily life but also about slavery, Native Americans, education, science, and revolution. At the recent Texas State Genealogical Society Conference held in Austin CCGS was announced as the 2 nd place winner in the Publication category of newsletters. In addition to the certificate a monetary award was given to the society. McKinney Library Genealogy Blog Did you know the McKinney Library has a genealogy blog?
