1 By Root and Branch The Pierre-Fort Pierre Genealogical Society Newsletter Volume 32, Number 2, May 2010 Note from the Editor Are we genealogists or family historians? We do genealogy to learn our family history. Genealogy' is the blood line. No matter what we call ourselves, we are looking for the same basic information; then as historians, researching a little deeper. We hope to discover what made them like they were and, maybe, in the process learn something about ourselves. Genealogy is the record or account derived from the search for your family. Family history is more than a list of people, places and dates. I have always wanted more than just the pedigree... I want to know what my ancestors did, what they felt and how the world was at their time here. There are many ways to find out about the times and what was happening in time of our grandparents, great-grandparents, and so forth. It is exciting and it also helps us be able to understand what might have happened to make them move around or disappear. Enjoy the history and see what you can find! Society Officers for 2010 Linda Lowe, President, Quarterly Editor Lori Sears, Vice President Richard Phillips, Treasurer Susan Assmus, Past-President Virginia Hanson, Board Member Kathy Connell, Board Member pierregen@pie.midco.net lkayaz@aol.com richphil@dakota2k.net assmus@pie.midco.net virginia.m.hanson@state.sd.us weas.connell@yahoo.com Interesting Genealogical Information Bev Huckins The Family Tree Magazine, February 2003 has an interesting article by John Philip Colletta The Shipping News. This article informs us how we might discover stories about the voyages to America by accessing port city newspapers of the 19 th and early 20 th centuries. They usually had a regular feature which reported on ships arriving, expected and departed. Content in these features varied as did the names of the feature column. If you know your ancestor s ship, date and port of entry, you can access the papers. Newspapers of the five major ports Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and New Orleans - and most minor ports are readily available on microfilm. In these columns, you could find out about 1) stormy weather during the voyage, 2) verify or clarify family stories, 3) find out who traveled cabin-class, 4) after 1893, you might find the date & port of embarkation, 5) as steamships improved, more and more passengers arrived each time and newspapers printed information about the countries of origin so you know who traveled with your ancestors, 6) what was the actual date of arrival? 7) were there mishaps on board or delays in arrival at the port? This article also lists a Tool Kit of newspaper resources available on the web in Perhaps most of this information is still viable! Happy Hunting!! The family tree acquires deep roots and many rings as it grows. Add two parents, four grandparents, eight great-grandparents, etc. for ten generations, and you come up with a crowd of 2,046 ancestors. One drop-out and you wouldn't be here. 8 Researching on the Internet South Dakota Research There are some really good resources on the internet for research in South Dakota. The following is a list of a few that I have checked out. Information about vital records research in South Dakota: South Dakota State Library- from this page you can access Sanborn maps, Heritage Quest, and many more research databases and helps. Just click on the link For remote users with library card if you have a library card from a SD library, if not, you will need to go to a SD public library for access: South Dakota Historical Society this has databases plus a search for newspapers that have been microfilmed, searchable by town, county and time frame. From the main page, go to archives, then For Genealogists : South Dakota Genweb Archives: South Dakota Birth Record Search for dates over 100 years ago: Native American Research helps: FamilySearch site that has the digitized images and information from the LDS microfilm library. Some records are searchable, some are only the images: Only a genealogist regards a step backwards as progress. By Root and Branch Volume 32, Number 2 Page 8 of 10

9 From Louisiana Purchase to two Dakotas: South Dakota s Past May 2, 1803: Napoleon sells Louisiana Territory (including all of South Dakota and most of North Dakota) to the U.S. government. 1812: Northern part of Louisiana Territory formed in into Territory of Missouri. 1818: U.S.-Canada boundary set at 49 th Parallel; Red River Valley country comes under U.S. control. 1834: Land east of Missouri River becomes part of Michigan Territory; Wisconsin Territory in 1836; Iowa Territory in 1838; Minnesota Territory in : Land east of Missouri River becomes part of Nebraska Territory. 1858: Minnesota becomes a state. Area between Minnesota's western border and Missouri River becomes a no-man's land with no territorial government. 1861: Dakota Territory established, consisting of present-day North and South Dakota, and most of Montana and Wyoming. 1863: Dakota Territory reduced to include only North and South Dakota. Nov. 2, 1889: Statehood. Dakota Territory divided into two states: North Dakota (39th state) and South Dakota (40th state). In 1885, the Office of Commissioner of Immigration published the book Dakota, which promoted immigration into Dakota Territory. The book supported its claim that Dakota is not a wild country with excerpts like the following: It has 2,500 miles of railway; more than Massachusetts, New Jersey, Georgia, Nebraska, Kentucky, or any one of 20 other old settled states. It has 2,000 school houses; more than Vermont, Rhode Island, Florida, or any one of 15 other states. It has 275 Newspapers; more than any New England state, except Massachusetts, or any eastern state except New York and Pennsylvania. The growth of Dakota is phenomenal. In 1880, it had but 135,000 inhabitants. Now, it casts well on to 100,000 votes and has a population of 500,000.
