1 My Favourite Irish Resources David A Larkin a talk delivered at the Genealogical Society of Queensland Inc August Seminar
2 I shall be talking about some of the sources I frequently use in my heritage studies, many of which are now conveniently and inexpensively available on CD Rom. These resources include... Journals of Antiquarian and Genealogical associations. Local Histories -Diocesan, County or Parish records. Annals and Genealogies (for the earlier period). CD s containing indexed and searchable records from the 1500 s to the 1900 s. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Journals The two most widely used Journals in my library, which I subscribed to more than 25 years ago, are The IRISH GENEALOGIST and the IRISH ANCESTOR - both of which have recently been published onto CD format making them more readily accessible than before. The third most useful publication is ANALECTA HIBERNICA which is for the more serious scholar, but contains many useful records that I use. The IRISH GENEALOGIST is the official organ of the Irish Genealogical Research Society which was founded by Rev Fr. Wallace Clare in London, and eventually established a branch in Ireland some fifty years later. Their publications date from 1937 to Many eminent Irish and English Genealogists and historians of the Irish persuasion were involved and contributed to this very highly acclaimed publication covering subjects such as Family Genealogies, Registers, Abstracts and Indexes of Wills, Monumental Inscriptions, Trade Directories and Miscellaneous records. Many articles included inaccessible material that is in private collections or now lost. A small selection of some records include Census returns for Pollrone, Kilkenny Abstracts of Wills ( ) Accountbook of Christopher St George, Kilcolgan, Galway (1986) Disposessed Landowners of Ireland 1664 ( ) Employees of the Board of Ordnance 1815 (1985) Freemen of Dunleer, Louth 1715 (1968) Freemen of Waterford (1978) Freemen of Wexford City 1776 (1973, 74, 75) Gentlemen of Thomond (Clare) 1567 (1969) 2

It was a highly pictorial publication with articles similar in content to The Irish Genealogist with only once to my knowledge duplicating a record, so they compliment each other very well. As with the Irish Genealogist some articles ran across a number of issues like a serial, due to space allocation. A selection of records include... Abstracts of Wills ( ) Ardagh Diocese Wills and MLB Index (1971 supp) Businessmen of Ennis, Clare 1797 & 1803 (1-1984) Businessmen who issued Tokens in Ireland (1-1978) Catholic Merchants of Cork City 1762 (1-1971) Churchwardens of Templecrone, Donegal (2-1984) Clonfert Wills and MLB Index (1970 supp) Declaration against the Repeal of the Union 1830 (1 & ) Dublin Freemen (1983) Dublin Pipe Water Accounts 1680 Emigrants from Ennistymon Workhouse (2-1981) Emigrants from Limerick Workhouse (2-1982) Emigrants from Nenagh Workhouse (1-1985) Employees of the Irish Revenue 1678 ( ) and 1709 (1-1974) Freeholders of Carlow 1767 (1980) 3

Nominees in State Tontines (1-1970) Silversmiths of Limerick (2-1978) Tenants of J P Smyth at Gort, Galway 1805 (1-1982) Ulster Linen Drapers (1-1979) Voters of Clare 1768 (1-1986) Voters of Limerick City 1817 (1-1985) Voters of Waterford City 1807 (1-1976) ANALECTA HIBERNICA is the publication of the Irish Manuscripts Commission who published their journal regularly as the editors saw fit to release them from 1930 (1) to 1970 (26), and only a few since then. Many articles are for the scholars of the Irish and Latin languages, while there are numerous surveys of record collections cataloguing what is available mainly for the archivist and librarian, but there is a good deal of less-highbrow records which can be of use to the ordinary genealogist. Again, like the Irish Genealogical Research Society, it was the cream of Irish historians and eminent genealogists who edited works for this publication. There are many surveys of records noting their content, and the most useful of these are the Family Papers in Private Keeping which have been sorted and catalogued in AH 15, 20 and 25. Some of these collections have since been deposited in the National Library, but the surveys themselves are of enormous value. Because of their limited general research content they have not yet been earmarked for publication onto CD for the amateur genealogist. Useful Records include... Calendar of Irish Council Books ( ) Chronology of foundations by the Franciscans (6-1934) Commissioners of the Peace 1672 ( ) Documents relating to the Irish in the West Indies (4-1932) 4

6 Local histories There are numerous histories written based on localities that offer varying degrees of records within the publication. Most however give a number of records that are of interest to the genealogist, such as lists of ecclesiastic incumbents and civil servants. Occupational records may also be included as well as the history of the local septs and clans, and of the politics of the district. Many are now being made available on CD rom, while others will still be available to the genealogist through the LDS film hire scheme until such time as they are published onto CD. 8 Annals and Genealogies ANNALS The annals were the earliest recorded history of Ireland kept by the monks and then by the hereditary senachie families of historians and genealogists. Those available to us date from the eighth century, themselves copies of earlier works, all of which have been copied and updated right through to the seventeenth and in some cases the nineteenth century. They are notes mainly of obituaries, battles, natural occurrences and newsworthy snippets listed chronologically from the earliest times. They have been translated and edited with copious notes on nomenclature, topography, genealogy and historical comment by eminent scholars which provide us with an english translation of Ireland s history. The most notable and accessible (translated) of these include... Annals of the Four Masters Annals of the Kingdom of Ireland from the earliest times to 1616, compiled by the Four Masters (O Clery, O Dugenan and O Mulconry scholars) led by Miceal O Clery from 1632 to 1636, for their patron Ferghal O Gara. They have been edited with copious annotations and cross references by Dr. John O Donovan in (reprinted in O Kief Coshe Mange, and also published by de Burca) Annals of Ulster Originally called the Book of Ballymacmanus, these annals start from the establishment of the See of Armagh 431 and were compiled by Cathal MacManus Maguire, Dean of Clogher to 1498, and continued to 1520 by Rory O Cassidy, Archbishop of Clogher. Edited and annotated by Hennessy and MacCarthy in 4 volumes (LDS , and at SLV) Annals of Innisfallen Dating from 433 to 1450, they were written by the monks of Emly in Tipperary from 1092 and the last recorded century was finished at Innisfallen, Kerry. Translated, edited and printed by the Irish Manuscript Commission as Analecta Hibernica #18 (1951) by Seamus Pender. An English Index to the surnames and clan names was printed in the Irish Genealogist by Frank B Payton MacFirbis Great Book of Genealogies This great book of genealogies by Dubhaltach MacFirbisigh ( ) of Lacken, Sligo, who worked for the antiquarian Sir James Ware in Dublin, was mainly compiled in Galway City before the Cromwellian occupation, and an abridgment of these was completed by The Eugene O Curry transcript of 1836 in the RIA (Ms C VI 2), has been recently translated, edited and fully indexed by Dr Nollaig O Muraile, a native of Knock, Mayo into five volumes and published by Eamonn de Burca (of Castlebar, Mayo -costs 635). 11 Tithe Applotment Books The title is misleading as it is only the index to these records for Northern Ireland. They give the name, townland, parish and county and the year the Tithe was taken.
