They are to be downloaded and read before class. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Family businesses comprise the vast majority of commercial ventures in the world. Nation wide over 85% of privately held businesses are family owned and/or operated. Many publicly held companies are also family owned. One third of the Fortune 500 is family owned. Family businesses are unique in many ways. There is a strong interaction between the family system and the business systems, leading to some very interesting dynamics. The integration of the business aspect as well as the psychological aspect makes this course unique in having a better understanding of your role in the family business as either an employee or as a family business member. The course is taught as a seminar with some brief lectures but mostly cases and guest resources/speakers from the fields of law, insurance, accounting, banking and family business owners, videos, case discussion text readings, and outside reading assignments. Because family business management is multidisciplinary we bring in

2 guest speakers who are experts in their particular field with the most current information in their area of expertise. A genogram presentation, a midterm, presentation and a project are required. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of his course, students should be able to: 1. Describe, discuss and explain a family business system and identify the family member s particular roles in the family business and where they fit in the family enterprise system. 2. Describe the various roles and activities of family members working in a family business, evaluate and differentiate between key employees and family employees. 3. Develop a Succession Process that highlights key competencies and selection criteria and relates clearly to the overall strategic plan. 4. Compare and contrast the factors which influence the qualities of healthy families and firms. 5. Identify potential contributions of legal, insurance, accounting and banking industries to family business continuity 6. Develop a genogram (family tree) which in essence gives the fundamental basis of being able to read the dynamics and pertinent issues facing a family business 7. Develop a Family Council with a Family Creed depicting the business fundamentals required for entry and exit strategies into a family business by using the right sort of governance structure ASSIGNMENTS: EXAMS: The Midterm will be an individual Genogram presented and showing trends. A Confrontation Model 2 page essay For the finals there will be an essay of 3 questions on concepts learned and applied to case studies and on the book Dethroning the King Grading will be according to the Oral Rubrics and Written Rubrics, set standards by the Management Department GENOGRAM: This is a tool for understanding the family side of the family business. Students will identify and become knowledgeable about their family history, birth order and gender differences and how they affect in a positive or negative way a family business. By understanding the important events and experiences that influenced individuals to behave in a certain manner, gives the student a better perspective of the family members working in the family business as well as an understanding of the roots that created the family business. Students will give a

3 presentation of their family genogram to the class, highlighting trends and what they have discovered as a pattern or an outcome of having done this genogram. (See Guidelines for Genograms at the end of the syllabus). GENOGRAM PRESENTATION: Each student will give a 15 minute presentation of the highlights of the family genogram depicting trends etc. GRADING: Assignments will be weighted 10% Confrontation Model 40%. Genogram and Presentation 40% Essay Final 10% Class participation 100%
