DATE: 01 October 2015 BRILLIANT HAIR DRESSER and SALOON. No. 100, Smart Street. Near perfect Square. Handsome city. State: Context. INDIA PIN: SUB: Context of my Saloon towards my purpose and strategic direction I am Jackie Sharof, owner and manager of my Saloon. I am in this business at the above said place only since the time I started this about a year back. I propose to get a good understanding of the context of my business and, the interested parties and their needs and expectations so as to manage my Saloon in the best possible way. I further wish to have my Saloon certified to the ISO9001:2015. I am having about 6 years experience in managing a Saloon in another city, where I was employed and have learnt quite a bit about the finer details of this business. I am fairly new to this growing locality perfect square area, and it is surrounded with many residential apartments, schools, colleges and other commercial establishments. New projects for residential layouts are being developed. I am aware that I have no competition as of now, however I may have competition soon and hence must be ready to address it. I am also looking at opportunities to open another Saloon as the area develops and expands, if my business picks up well due to my best efforts here. So I intend to bring in some quality management system in place to operate my Saloon business. So, let me first list out the various elements that I propose to consider in making up this context for my better understanding. 1. Customers (Guests who visit the Saloon for service and pay me, called Guests) GUESTS 2. Agency that collects cut hair from my Saloon and pay me. C2 3. Suppliers who provide me Saloon consumables and instruments. S1 4. Service providers who provide Electricity and water and housekeeping services. S2 5. The local municipality inspector who is responsible for my license issue and its conditions. S3 6. The owner of my premises to whom I pay rent and abide by the terms and conditions of use of premises. S4 7. The police men of the area. P1 8. My Bank, who provided me the loan on security and provides current account for my business. B1 9. My advisor, the person for whom I worked for 6 years and who encouraged me to start my own business. A1 10. Myself 11. My employees 12. My family
13. My friends and acquaintances I will consider any further new issues as and when it comes up and keep this updated with a new date, which I will add into this document subsequently. So this becomes my first current live documented information... xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx..xxx 1. GUESTS: The population is this area is mixed and from all parts of the country. However the local are the majority who speak local language Kannada. It is an advantage for me as well that I speak the same. I do speak Hindi, English and a few other popular Indian languages. This comes to my advantage. There are new nuclear families residing here and therefore lot many kids are expected. I have to have suitable chair height enhancers for kids. I propose to have special Haircut rates for school kids to attract more kids. Obviously the parents also will patronage my Saloon. College students obviously look for trendy hair styles and this must be promoted and latest styles learnt so as to cater to this group. About 10 to 15% are foreign residents. I expect them to be my guests though they may choose to go to 5 star hotels Saloon which is far. I have to think of special ways to attract them and keep a good eye on hygiene and cleanliness. My knowledge of English language is handy. I may have to make some leaflets to bring their attention to my Saloon. I could be cheaper than the 5 star hotel saloons, but they do not care. The local population does not have a haircut on Tuesdays by tradition. So also is my custom and traditional belief. So I propose to keep the Tuesday closed for guests. 2. C2: The biggest dump that I generate is the cut hairs. There is just one agency that collects this in the city. So I am obligated to work with him and come to terms with his conditions. I have to put the hairs in black plastic bags and weigh them to make a KG and keep them sealed. His payments are per KG on spot. However since I am in a new locality he pays me lesser than normal charges. I have to manage with this. He comes to collect on any day in the week, including Tuesdays, but not Sundays. I have to be prepared for this. 3. S1: I have a fair connection with the suppliers of Saloon instruments and consumables. They deliver to my shop. I have to pay them within the credit time. This is a must to have continuous supply. I have to make provisions for this without fail. I am also looking for new suppliers who can supply latest instruments in Saloon use. Some equipment runs on only 110v. So I have to be careful in selection or buy a voltage convertor for the use of some latest style instruments. I have a good rapport with them and they visit me often to check on stocks and so I have less of inventory management and ordering burden. I still have to keep a watch on stocks to decide what to pick more and what to avoid. They tend to dump on me more than what I may use. I usually ask them to deliver on Tuesdays as that day is closed for Guests, but I open the Saloon for maintenance and other weekly routines, with limited support staff for half day.
4. S2: The bills for the water and electricity are issued once a month and I have to arrange for payment within due date. I have to make timely provisions for this. The housekeeping agency come one hour before and clean the premise every day. I have contracted with them to do deep cleaning on Tuesdays at the same cost. Towards this I have offered them 50% discount in saloon services for them. To keep the electricity line man and the water meter collector happy, I have also offered them 50% discount on saloon services to them. They seem happy as of now, and I get trouble free service. 5. S3. The local area inspector comes in unannounced and though I have met most of the conditions, I have to keep this man happy so that my business is not affected. Some of the areas he looks at are the fee payments, provision of clean toilets for the workers, provision of clean drinking water for the workers, proper break times for workers, their statutory payments coverage etc, etc. I meet most of them, however some contract Saloon helpers are out of the coverage, as they do not continue for reasonable time. I have been able to smoothly manage with this from my experience. The Inspector is also offered a free Saloon service for one monthly visit, not clubbed with his inspection. 6. S4: I have been fortunate to get a good owner of my premise, who does not interfere with my working. However he is keen on my upkeep of the property and I have to pay special attention. My advance money is blocked with him towards security on this. I also get no leverage for delay in payment of rent. Hence I have to make suitable provisions for this well in time. He is a non interfering person and no other obligatory services too. He desisted any such from me. An upright and strict person. This premise lease is for a three year term. I may have to see for another bigger place IF my business grows within the three years OR be able to keep the same at a higher rental. I am unsure if he will continue to lease to me though. I have this risk which I have to be aware and keep a look out for possible changes or expansions. 7. P1. The policeman as you know is tricky. The main problem is the parking on holidays when the rush is more. He inevitably comes on those days and books my guests for wrong parking early mornings. I cannot but plead with my guests to park at designated place. The parking space I have to offer is limited. This is a big drawback on holiday Saloon business. I have to somehow keep the local policeman happy as well as not disturb by guests or the nearby traffic. These Policemen also keep changing from time to time. A big headache. You know what I mean.. 8. B1: My Bank is in the near vicinity and has been supportive in lending to my business. Some of my Saloon furniture and equipments are hypothecated to the bank. I have to put up this hypothecation notice in my Saloon. I have to make suitable provision to cover for the EMI payments that I am due towards the loan. As I do not have time and resources to internet banking, the bank being near my Saloon is a big boon. I also propose to pay out more lump
sum amount periodically so as to reduce my EMI term. This will help me better in my future expansion and the Bank will have more confidence to lend me further. 9. A1: My guide and well-wisher, who encouraged me to be an entrepreneur. I seek his advice often and request him to visit my Saloon now and then. His inputs have been valuable. He also supports me when I need skilled people. The tricks of the trade that I learnt from him are invaluable. They have helped me shape and will sustain my future as I learn more from experience. He was my guide in teaching me how to handle the first haircut of a baby boy traditionally which is a typical function in our community that attracts a lot of people and is a grand celebration. Knowing this has helped me serve the community and it has also helped enhance my business as well as earnings from such first haircut tradition. It has helped me in getting a respectable stature within my community. I will pursue this whenever there is a request from the local residents. 10. Myself: I am a self contained person and I can do any task of the Saloon by myself. I set this as an example for my workers. I employ about 5 Hair dressers on weekdays and extra 2 on weekends and holidays. On demand I can also arrange for a lady hair dresser. Though the call for Hair cuts at home is rare, I get few requests. I honor this and I get extra payments on this. But I have to manage my time with the time of the caller suitably. I tend to take up all tasks and trust my employees in the job. I am grooming a first line manager who will be responsible for the Saloon in my absence. I remember, I grew up like this with the confidence of my A1 above. My attitude and respect to work gets me some of the workers willingly working for me on Tuesdays for the deep cleaning and other upkeep activities. Music is an essential part of the Saloon business, and I let the employees set up this as this gives them the added pleasure. I have to look to grow and consolidate and either expand or open branch. I want to make my Saloon a BRAND. 11. My employees: The turnaround in this job is high. So I have to retain the skilled hair dressers with added incentives. There is also the language issue that I have to manage and teach the employees, both the talking and the discipline with the guests. I have to stress upon them on their personal hygiene and grooming and pleasing personality. If they are not happy they cannot be pleasing I know. So I have to manage them and seek help from my guide A1 for manpower at times of need. This is an ongoing risk. I have been so far good in managing this and hope to be as friendly as possible to keep the workforce. Salary payments on time are very essential, which I have to give top priority. I do not encourage taking tips by the employees and whatever is such tips from guests are pooled and equally shared among all. This way I have strived to keep the parity and have the workforce acceptance about it. 12. My Family: This is the core of my business purpose. T he family happiness comes foremost. I know I have to take time for this to be with family and yet not affect my business. I use the Sundays after the rush hour to be with family and let my next in charge to manage both business and cash. I have to let go to have their confidence and support. This is a risk that I
take with a big trust on people. I may be adversely affected, but have not been deceived so far. I trust in God and in people. This has been my core value. My family is happy as I am able to meet the needs of paying the attention as well as the time with them. I care for the education and child development. You know that special rates for school kids I told about This is in line with my value system. 13. My friends and acquaintances: They have been a very supporting group who always has patronaged my business. I am indebted to them for the invaluable support in my establishment. I strive to keep them under all circumstances and grow my acquaintances. They form one of the best advertising for me. A word from them will certainly get me new customers. I strive to make every guest as my acquaintance with the best possible service. I teach the same to my employees. --- xxx ---
