I m passionate about early years care & education and believe that children & families deserve the best quality provision. To help you create a quality & sustainable business, I have developed this free self-help health check to give you things to think about when considering the current position of your business. It asks you to think about the key parts of your business to see what areas are working well and also to help you see if there are any areas that you might need to focus on. Please consider your answers carefully and use the prompts to help you. For your business to be successful I would expect that most of your responses would be positive. 2 1. PREMISES Do you have any of the following in place? OWN MY PROPERTY SHORT LEASE 0-5 YEARS FORMAL AGREEMENT LONG LEASE 5 YEARS+ LICENSE Is your premises fit for purpose? By that I mean a freeflow outside area, accessible toilets, safe secure space, exclusive use whilst the sessions operate. etc. SOME THINGS ARE T RIGHT Are you able to expand your provision in your current premises? 2. BUSINESS Do you have a current business plan? Current means a plan prepared and updated within the last 3 months Do you know how many sessions you need to sell to break even? This must include funded sessions Do you think your business is likely to be sustainable for the next 12 months?

3 At present does your business: A. Make a surplus? B. Break even? C. Make a loss? Do you have a budget and Cash Flow Forecast for the next 12 months? If yes do you monitor actual income and expenditure against the budget at least every 2 months? Do you use the services of an accountant? Do you have a fee policy? Do you closely monitor and deal with bad debts?

4 Are you aware of any potential threats to your business? By this I mean changes to the National Living wage, Pension rights of employees, National Funding Formula, increase to 30 hours of free childcare, etc. If yes are you taking steps to address the risk? 3. STAFFING Do all your staff have current contracts? Do you regularly update your staffing policies and procedures? This should be at least every 12 months or when there is a change in the law Do you have trouble keeping and recruiting high quality staff?

5 4. GENERAL BITS Are you clear who has the legal responsibilities for running your setting? This could be a Management Committee, an Owner, You, etc. Does this person have all the information they need to do this effectively? Where do you go to for support and advice on business matters? LOCAL AUTHORITY FRIEND OR FAMILY OTHER ACCOUNTANT MEMBERSHIP ORGANISATION Do you take any steps to actively promote your business? Thank you for taking the time to complete this.
