Chapter 2 The International Award for Young People The idea of The International Award for Young People comes from Great Britain, where the Award is well known since1956, and where the participants are enormously enthusiastic about this programme. Not only in Great Britain, but all over the world there are more than 140 countries which have joined. In total there are about 8 million young people worldwide who have joined. In the Netherlands this programme has been introduced 20 years ago and there are groups of participants in all provinces. What is The International Award for Young People in the first place? If you want to do something totally different after school, having new, special, experiences, the Award is perfect for you! Goal is to compete with yourself and reaching goals by yourself. There are four parts of the Award: Skills, services, physical recreation and an expedition. You work individually and you don t compete with other participants. The expedition is the only part you do as a group. You can achieve an award on three levels, which differ in the amount of time needed for the goals. Individual sections Groupwork Services Physical recreation Skills Expedition BRONZE AWARD 3 months 3 months 3 months 2 days and 1 night One of those + 3 months as a main section SILVER AWARD 6 months 6 months 6 months 3 days and 2 nights + 6 months at one of these sections if you haven t done your Bronze Award = main part GOLDEN AWARD 12 months 12 months 12 months 4 days and 3 nights + 6 months at one of these sections if you haven t done Silver. + Residential project of 5 days and 4 nights. 3
Participating with the Award is voluntary, not because you need to, but because you want to! Je doet vrijwillig mee aan het programma, dus niet omdat je het moet maar omdat je het wilt! If you want to know more about he Award, check Chapter 3 The spotlight is on you! You can t live on frikandels and magnetronfood said a participant who joined a cooking course. Why should you participate?! O O O O O O O O You like working on your own, you do your own thing and you are responsible. You like challenges, you extend your own borders. You like meeting new people, you broaden your own horizon. You want to finish something, you develop perseverance and you reach your goals. You want to work on your future: the Award looks good on your CV. You want to learn time management, in a few months time you will reach your goals. You want to mean something for others. You develope resposibilities and you get to know that people appreciate you. You want to get to know yourself. What do I know? What can I do? What do I want? Other, namely: 4
If you participate in the Award, it is important to do something you like. That can be things you already can do. But also things you want to learn, you want to develop. You can find some examples on the next pages. Maybe you find something you are good at. Write down if you 1. are already good at this 2. are a bit good at this 3. want to exercise, do or learn this Soccer Volleyball Powerlifting, fitness, cardio Drawing and painting Dancing, streetdance, ballroom Using computer, playing games, writing letters, using internet Singing, rapping Writing stories, texts or poems. 6 Sharing with others, for example goods or sweets Working together, with others Learning and doing new things Respect others Being honest to others Taking initiative Finishing something what I started Having fun with others Something different, namely: Chapter 4 What are you going to do as physical recreation, skills and service? Because of boxing I got more self-confidence. I succeeded that, otherwise I wouldn t stand here on the podium said a participant after a course boxing. Physical recreation You are going to sport more, for example by attending aerobics classes or do fitness for an hour a week. Maybe you can do streetdance? You can also train to swim, bike or run more and further. What do you like/ don t like of sport? What sport have you done already? Are you doing a sport now? 6
Do you wish to continue that? Or would you do something new as sport? Do you want to sport on your own or in a team? Do you want to improve your condition, to learn a new technique or just being sportive? Do you know what possibilities there are near you? Circle that in the picture below. 7

Do you know what possibilities there are near you? Circle that in the picture below. 9
Service You do something for others without getting paid, for example work at a school magazine, help at an animal shelter, train younger kids or work at the scouting. But you can do also voluntary work at: youth centres, retirement homes or as a forest worker. Have you done voluntary work before? Are you a member of something where you can do voluntary work? Do you know someone who does voluntary work and who can help you? If you have never done voluntary work before: what do you like to do in your spare time, without getting paid? Make circles in the picture below: 10

Chapter 8 The Expedition You ve done all the other sections and you are going on an expedition! With a group of 4-5 people you are going on a journey. With a backpack, a tent and a sleepingbag. You walk, bike or canoe quite a distance, you cook your own food and on the last day you will go as a group to the finish. It sounds easy, but I can be hard! This is the only part you do as a group. You have to help each other to the finish! The details: There is a special Expedition- manual. You can find it beneath downloads at If you do an expedition for a Bronze Award: You have a two-day journey, one night included You are in total 12 hours active, about 6 hours a day Walking: 24 kilometres in total Biking: 120 kilometres in total Canoeing: 4 hours a day Before you are allowed to go Three months before having the expedition you start preparing. What happens in these three months: The group will be assembled A goal will be set As a group you make a plan for the preparations: what do you need? What do you have to learn? - Practising working together - A map reading course - Exercising packing your backpack and walking with backpack - Exercising setting up a tent 20
- Exercising cooking on a gas jet - Basic First Aid exercises - What more? Coaching During the preparations you will be coached by someone of your school or organisation: the Award mentor. When you think you are prepared enough for the expedition, you first have a pre-expedition with your mentor. After this the group can sign in for the real Expedition and an assessor will visit you. He or she is going to check if you are really prepared and ready for the Expedition. This assessor will be near to you during the Expedition. Finishing of this section When you reach the finish the intention is to make a short report about your expedition as a group. You can write, you can make a movie or a photo report. This is the last part of the (bronze) Award. Soon you will get a bronze medaille, the Award and a certificate. 21
Brainstormpaper Biking? Where? Walking? Where? And how do we bike? And how do we walk? What do we need? What do we need? With the canoe? Where? Can we do that? What do we need? 22
Preparation calendar for the expedition When? What are you going to do? Who is in charge of what? When should it be finished? At least 12 weeks before you go on the expedition Deciding when and how you are going on expedition, what route you take and signing up the expedition at: Planning the date of the pre-expedition Making a list of what you need Training a few things and some research Six weeks before you go on expedition Inviting the assessor About five weeks before you go on expedition Pre-expedition Four weeks before you go on expedition Meeting the assessor 23
Two weeks before the expedition Dividing tasks during the expedition and checking if you have done and organized everything. Chapter 9 The Award ceremony; party! When you finished all four sections you can be proud of yourself! You have learned a lot, you tried a lot, you helped others and you sustained: an achievement which is worth a party. If you have done everything, sign up for an Award ceremony by > meedoen > aanmelden uitreiking The ceremony is an official and festive assembly with family, people from the organizations and schools and representatives of the Award. Often the ceremony takes place at a special location, for example a town hall, theatre, church or castle. You will get an Award, a bronze (or silver, or golden) medaille which you probably have seen before. Also, you will get an official certificate with your name and a signature. During the ceremony, you are in the spotlights! 24
