1 INTERVIEWING PILGRIMS TO SANTIAGO A.-GREETINGS AND INTRODUCING THEMSELVES Good morning, good afternoon, hello, excuse me,.sorry,.. We are students (I am a student) at the (secondary, local, high) school in Carrión de los Condes and we have a school project to improve our English conversation skills Our English teacher has asked us to do a school project in order to practice English and to welcome pilgrims on their way to Santiago We are looking forward to meeting pilgrims going to Santiago, to speak English to them and help them if we can We want to welcome (host) pilgrims on their trip to Santiago and at the same time practice English B.-ASKING FOR PERMISSION TO RECORD THE INTERVIEW OR TO TAKE PHOTOS OR VIDEOS We (I) wondered if you had some spare time to answer a few questions about your pilgrimage (your trip) We were (I was) wondering if you could help us with our English class project; we would like to ask you some questions about your trip and your experiences walking (going) to Santiago Would you mind if we took some photos or made a video to use them in our English class? If you don t mind we ll need to record the interview, to use it in our class later

2 C.-THE PROPER INTERVIEW THEIR COUNTRY, THE OWN WAY TO SANTIAGO,DISTANCE, THE BEGINNING AND THE END, THE TIME THEY ARE GOING TO SPEND, IF IT IS THE FIRST TIME, HOW THEY ARE DOING THE WAY (ALONE, WITH SOMEONE, BY CAR, ON FOOT,..), WHY ARE THEY DOING THAT, 1. My first question is where are you from, and have you done the pilgrim trail before? Have you already been to another part of Spain? 2. We know that lots of people do the route in different ways (walking, by bike, on horse, by car, even by bus), so how are you travelling and why have you chosen this way? 3. Are you going to Santiago alone or with someone else, (who are you going with)? Is it easy to meet people if you are alone? Have you walked or done similar trails? Did you find it challenging? What motivated you to do the trail? For you, is this an endurance sport or it is more about finding time to think? Does the pilgrimage make you think of ancient pilgrims and the dangers that they had to face in medieval times? How long have you taken to do the pilgrim s way. When and where did you start? Are you going to finish your trip in Santiago or have you planned to stop before this? 6. We have noticed that some pilgrims use a bus or a truck to take their luggage from place to place while they are walking or cycling. Do you think that it is too hard to take your own bags or do you prefer the challenge of doing the pilgrimage like people in the past with your possessions with you? 7. More or less, how long do you walk every day? How many kilometres do you do every day (journey), what time do you usually start in the morning and end at night? 8.

3 PLACES ON THE ROUTE, THE HARDEST PART, THE EASIEST PART, THE WEATHER, OTHER PLACES TO VISIT IN SPAIN AFTER THE ROUTE, MONUMENTS, VIEWS, 1. What has been your favourite part of the pilgrims trail, which has been the nicest? What has been the hardest and the easiest part of the trip? Why? 2. Where are you going to stop next? 3. Have you had enough time to visit monuments or different places near the villages on the way? Would you like to spend more time doing this? Do you find the weather in Spain a problem when doing the trail? What do you think is the best time of the year to do the pilgrimage to Santiago? What s the main difference between where you live and here? BASICS 1. Aside (apart) from the basics such as passport (within it is necessary), bank card, money, backpack.. Which three items are must-bring things for you on your trip? 2. Has it been worth the money you have spent on this trip? Is it too expensive? 3. FOOD IN SPAIN AND ON THE WAY 1. I m going to ask you about the food in Spain,.What type of meals have you had? Where have you eaten your main meals of the day? Do you go to restaurants or bars when you arrive in a village or do you buy your own food? 2. Where have you bought your food? Did you bring snacks for the trail?

4 3. What do you think about Spanish food? Have you already tried Spanish omelette, black pudding (we call it morcilla) or paella? HOSTELS 1. How about the hostels; are they relaxing and comfortable? 2. Are they clean enough? Which are the best (in which part of journey are the best ones)? 3. Are they worth the price? How much are they? Is it the same price for all of them? If you could afford a little more comfort, would you pay for it or do you think staying with other pilgrims and experiencing challenging situations is more important? Are you allowed to clean your clothes in all the hostels? Are some things not allowed? What time do you have to turn the lights off and go to bed? 6. PEOPLE ON THE WAY AND PEOPLE IN THE VILLAGES AND TOWNS 1. Talking about people on the trail, which nationalities have you met most on your trip? Have you made new friends? Do you find people from one country friendlier than others? Have you practiced a lot of languages? Which ones? 2. What do you think about Spanish people who live in the villages and towns where you arrive to spend the afternoon and the evening? Are we good hosts? Do you feel welcome? 3. If you have a problem or you need information, where would you go? To a bar? Would you ask to anyone you meet? Would you look for a hostel?

5 HEALTH PROBLEMS AND DIFFICULTIES BECAUSE OF THE PILGRIMAGE 1. We realize that some pilgrims have got difficulties and physical problems when they stop at the villages where we live, so what do you think about our medical service? Have you needed any help? If so, where? 2. Have you met any pilgrims with problems so serious that it has been necessary to finish the journey? 3. Is it necessary to do any training before this trip? Have you done it?
