1 Quiz 1 - Computer Graphics 2 Your first quiz is designed to review and test your knowledge of the fundamental terms and tools regarding the Illustrator Program: Basic Program Information, Tools and functions. Also there will be an emphasis on new design principles and terms. The Quiz will cover: Pen Tool Review, Text and Text Graphics Lessons, and Color Harmony Landscape Project. Basic File and Program Information: 1. Illustrator is a(n) vector based program which means it uses geometrical primitives such as points, lines, curves, shape to represent images in computer graphics. You can see in the image below the difference between vector and bitmapped (Photoshop)

2 2. When drawing in Illustrator the program mathematically plots curves and points to draw shapes and lines. These are called Bezier Curves. Illustrated below. The Pen Tool, Selections and Text in Illustrator: Selection Tool Identifications and Functions: The selection tools are located on your tool bar and are used to isolate and capture part of or all of a shape or line to be able to edit it, move it or manipulate it in some way. Be able to identify the terms and what they do: The Selection Tools: 1. Selection Tool: Used to move, rotate and scale an entire image. Used to copy shapes click and hold down the Alt key. 2. Direct Selection Tool: Used primarily to isolate an individual anchor point or pull tab to edit part of shape. It will move a shape but not rotate or scale it.

3 The anatomy of a shape: 1. The outline of shape is called the stroke 2. The interior of the shape is called the fill The Pen Tool: The Pen tool is your free hand drawing tool in Illustrator. It creates anchor points and Bezier curves to make lines and shapes. Here are the terms you will need to know about the tool: When using the pen tool you click the mouse/tool along the path you want to draw, it places squares called anchor points along the way as you change directions. These are labeled 1 and 2 above. When drawing you often have to change directions with curves. The easiest way to control the line when drawing is to convert the point this simply means to click on the anchor point once, this

4 will allow you to go from a curve to a straight line. The process also makes editing the curves much easier. This is labeled as Number 2 above. Once you have drawn a curved line you can edit it by using the pull tabs with the direct selection tool. These are labeled as Number 3 above. Text in Illustrator: Editing Text: To Resize or Rotate text use the Selection Tool To edit text like a shape: Go to > Type > Create Outlines (Menu Bar) Creating Outlines do things: because of the network it is a way to make sure I get the downloaded text. Its primary function is to allow you to edit it as an object Use the Direct Selection Tool to edit points and/or The Width Tool to Edit Stroke Width:

5 Pinciples of Design: Typography: the art or process of setting, arranging and designing text. Color Harmonies (Schemes): Analogous Color Harmony: Analogous color schemes use 2-3 colors that are next to each other (adjacent) to each other on the color wheel. It could also mean variations of one color. In the image below you can see Blues and Greens are Analogous: Advantages: These color schemes are often found in the natural world and are harmonious and generally pleasing to the eye. Here is an example from the natural world and advertising.

6 Disadvantages: Sometimes when using analogous color harmonies there is not enough Contrast. Contrast in design refers to opposites or difference in light and color. Sometimes in a design things blend together too much, making it difficult to see a focal point or get our attention. Here is an example of colors blending together too well: They are too similar and parts of them blend together in way that blends them too much Application: It is best to create contrast by choosing 1 color to dominate, a second to support and a third as a simple accent. Here is an example of analogous colors harmonizing but with more contrast Here the green dominates the tulip, the yellow is a subtle accent and blue supports (shadows)

7 Warm and Cool Harmonies (Analogous): Warm Colors: tend to be vivid and energetic. They are colors we associate with the sun, fire and they tend to advance visually towards us. Cool Colors: tend to give a calming and soothing effect, but tend to recede away from us. They are colors we associate with the sky, water, winter, dawn and dusk.

8 Complimentary Color Harmony: Complimentary Color schemes consist of 2-3 colors that are opposite on the color wheel. You can see Complimentary colors below in the Red and Green or a Split Complimentary in the Orange, Green and Purple. Advantages: Complimentary colors are used when you are looking to create a strong contrast. Contrast is the difference between colors. This method is used when looking to create a very strong contrast. Here is an example from a travel advertisement:

9 Disadvantages: too much of a contrast can become very irritating and difficult to focus on. This is a poor choice in trying to create harmony Notice on the left the contrast works to create a strong focal point and dramatic design but on the right there is too much contrast the red and green begin to work against each other. Application: it is best if using complimentary colors to use make on color dominate and the other simply an accent to add the pop factor to the design. Otherwise the image on the right they will compete too much and confuse the design. Contrast: this refers to the arrangement of opposites to create visual interest and dramatic visuals. In Graphic Design if you are going to make something different, make it very different. In the small picture below you can see the CONTRAST between the inside color of the flower and the black and white background.

10 Positive and Negative Space: In design the positive space refers to the object or shape that is the focal point and the negative space refers to the areas around or in between the object or shape. In the images below the positive space is the airplane, but the appearance is very different depending on what is white or black.
