1 Get the Drift and Bag It! Introduction Aloha, Thank you so much for participating in the 30 th annual Get the Drift and Bag It! cleanup initiative! We are so excited to have you on board! Included in this packet is everything that you need to conduct a successful cleanup. Social Media shenanigans.errr we mean, strategy! Right! Coordinator s Checklist Volunteer Sign-in Sheets Data Card Instructions Volunteer Data Cards Coordinator s Data Summary Card Please make sure to read through all the instructions before conducting your cleanup. It is important to participate in all methods suggested to assist in making this the most successful cleanup effort possible. Watch the process unfold! When you RSVP d to be a cleanup coordinator, we mapped the location of your cleanup in an effort to assess geospatial data on this cleanup effort and hopefully call attention to areas of need. 3 The need for cleaner oceans and shorelines is no laughing matter. By taking part in this cleanup campaign you are demonstrating that you mean business in tackling this issue and we greatly appreciate the initiative you are taking to be a part of the solution! In the spirit of creating awareness, we think it s healthy to still share a few good chuckles, giggles and snickers! Please enjoy dressing up, making fish lips, laughing and sharing your experience with the community by taking pictures and posting them on your Instagram with the #litterfreeoceans hashtag and/or tag us on Facebook. 4 Get the Drift and Bag It! Coordinator s Checklist 1) Site Considerations Access/parking/permits: Make sure the area is safe and accessible with plenty of parking and contact County Parks to see if a permit is required Check in station: Volunteer can sign in (yellow sheets) and pick up data card distribution (blue sheets), trash bags, gloves and other supplies Trash drop off site: Have volunteers bring their trash to one location for disposal Check In Drop Off 2) Supplies Trash bags Gloves Trash grabbers Data cards & pens/pencils (see data card instruction on blue sheet) Scale (optional) First aid kit Water Pruners (to cut fish nets/line) Shovel (to dig up buried material) Wheelbarrow (to move heavy items/bags) 3) Volunteer Sign in: Please have each of your participants print (legibly) their name and number on the yellow Sign-In Sheets provided. Each participant will be entered into the Donor Prize Drawing and these sheets will serve as their raffle ticket. The drawings will take place and winners will be notified at the end of the campaign in October. This method of participant tracking ensures every participant has a fair chance at winning a prize and it also assists us in obtaining accurate information. Coordinator s Checklist 4) Safety Tips Wear gloves and close-toed shoes Wear safety vests or bright colors if parts of the cleanup are located along a roadway on other high traffic areas Don t overdo physical exertion stop and take a rest break and drink water Wear sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses Keep quick energy foods on hand Be aware of your surroundings and the potential hazards associated with them, such as traffic and hazardous tree branches Use the buddy system by working in teams of two or three to maximize safety Don t over-stuff trash bags Have a first aid kit on hand Find out how to contact your local Fish and Wildlife Service office in case you encounter any dead, entangled, or injured wildlife. For sharps, carefully put into a container with a lid, mark the container as biohazard and discard. Include how many people joined together and how many pounds of trash was collected. It s also fun to add some weird finds. MMN will also be sending a county-wide total to all of the coordinators at the end of the campaign that you can share end-of-the-campaign reporting. 7 Get the Drift and Bag It! Data Card Instructions Data cards are vital to this campaign; every item collected is to be recorded. The information from your cleanup is directly used to facilitate understanding of solid waste management issues and their effects on our oceans. This in turn, influences the initiation and methodology of long-term solutions. Below are some suggestions to assist you in leading a smooth and successful cleanup and data collection effort. Thanks again for caring and taking the time and initiative to be part of the solution. Groups of 3-4 are best; (1-2) picking up trash, (1) holding trash bag, (1) recording data o Switch roles every 20 minutes so everyone has a turn in the various roles Allot 15 minutes at the end of the cleanup for groups to add their numbers on the data card Add up all of their data cards and enter information on coordinator summary card + + Return summary card to MMN one of three ways: o Drop it off at our office o a scanned copy to volunteer@cwdhawaii.org o Mail it: PO Box 757 Puunene HI, Data Card Instructions can also be found on our website:

8 VOLUNTEER OCEAN TRASH DATA FORM Ocean and waterway trash ranks as one of the most serious pollution problems choking our planet. Far more than an eyesore, a rising tide of marine debris threatens human health, wildlife, communities and economies around the world. The ocean faces many challenges, but trash should not be one of them. Ocean trash is entirely preventable, and data you collect are part of the solution. The International Coastal Cleanup is the world s largest volunteer effort on behalf of ocean and waterway health.
