3 CHESS COMPUTERS FROM MUNICH Past Glory Remade for the Future When the first chess computers were released in the 1970s, they quickly became the poster child for artificial intelligence. The Munich-based semiconductor company HEGENER+GLASER GmbH, a relative newcomer at the time, seized the moment and developed the first German chess computer. And so the MEPHISTO brand was born. The young engineer and Chess Champion Ossi Weiner was put in charge of the chess computer division. Just a few years later, the brand had become synonymous with chess computers in Germany and began its collaboration with the English programmer Richard Lang. The result was an unprecedented winning streak at the world championships in computer chess that went unbroken for many years. In the early nineties, so called tournament machines were used for the competitions these finely tuned chess computers, custom-built using handselected components, represented the epitome of what was technically possible at the time. In the following years, however, the market for chess computers continued to shrink. The reason for this was the increased prevalence of high-performance Intel PCs and the availability of affordable and powerful chess software. In 1994, the majority stake in the publicly listed company Hegener+Glaser AG went to an international industry investor. That same year, Richard Lang s ChessGenius program became the first chess computer program to beat an incumbent World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov in a legendary game Manfred Hegener and his chess computer specialist Ossi Weiner went on to found MILLENNIUM 2000 GmbH in Munich in Shortly afterwards, the first chess computer appeared on the shelves of German food retailers. This was the beginning of a new age of affordable devices for families and amateur players. In 2004, the company collaborated with David Levy, the English expert for artificial intelligence, and his team to develop the still-current concept of the electronic chess school with interactive course material, a course book and a speaking chess trainer. In 2014, the idea to reevaluate the market for premium chess computers bubbled back to the surface. First talks with old allies showed that a new high-performance chess computer was now possible due to advances made in the development of hardware and adaptable software. MILLENNIUM finally took the first step by releasing ChessGenius in October 2015, which has already become a milestone in recent chess computer history with a great priceperformance ratio and an ELO of over The even more sophisticated model ChessGenius Pro followed in The device stepped up its game even further and won the chess computer tournament in Kaufbeuren. There has been heavy speculation in the community about MILLENNIUM s next move, and aficionados have been calling for an edition using real wood pieces reminiscent of the former high-end devices by MEPHISTO. In spring 2017, the time has finally come: the development of the new ChessGenius Exclusive is complete. The result is a unique chess computer with a board and pieces made of real wood, fully automatic piece recognition, a modular computer system and a playing strength of over 2300 ELO. 35 years of experience in producing chess computers and a team with a know-how that is unrivalled anywhere in the world have made it possible!

4 CHESS GENIUS EXCLUSIVE The chesscomputer from real wood with automatic piece recognition Updateable and with a playing strenght over 2300 Elo ChessGenius Exclusive is a very flat, handcrafted wooden Sensor board, indicating its moves through 81 single-square lights and especially convenient fully automatic piece recognition. The computer unit itself is located in a separate casing with a very generous back-lit screen offering a diverse array of display options (similar to the former Mephisto high-end models), which can also be used as a chess clock during a game. The convenience of the fully automatic board is excellent, especially the high recognition speed and reliability. There is no need to look at the computer display during the game thanks to the brightly lit 4 LEDs per square on the board. The cable connection between the casing and the sensor board provides a modular setup allowing for hardware to be exchanged effortlessly and software updates to be performed via the integrated USB port. This can be used to save chess games or download opening libraries. The hardware is powered by an ARM Cortex M7 processor with a speed of 300MHz and a large flash memory and RAM.
