He defeated Alex Wolf in their individual game, but lost to Ruifeng Li, the brilliant Texas kid who owns Arkansas. Davis also won the state championship last year. The tournament was held at a beautiful hotel on Lake Hamilton. The Arkansas Chess Association meeting took place Sunday morning. The minutes are included in this issue. 2 ACN Fall of 10 Definitely castling into the attacking position. 16 rg1 bf6 17 g4 f4 18 bg2 rb8 19 ka1? Ka1 is safe but slow, and here black can punish white: (19 bxe5! 20 dxe5 qg5 (oo) and the K-side is blocked) 20 qh3! bg5 (20 bxe5 21 be4 +-) 21 qh5! threat of h4 21 h6 22 bxd5! bxd5 23 h4! bxh4 24 g5!! bxf2 25 gxh (25 kh8 26 qxf7 +- Ng6 is decisive, so 26 rxf7 27 nxf7+ kh7 28 rg7#) State Championship Games Nigel,Charles - Orton,Bill Arkansas Ch (4) (D02 Queen's Pawn Game) 1 d4 d5 2 nf3 c6 3 e3 bf5 4 bd3 bxd3 5 qxd3 e6 6 O-O f5 7 nbd2 nd7 (7 bd6! is what I'll play next time, since without the knight on d7, Q to c8 would protect both e6 and b7 light squares; 7 nf6; 7 nh6!?) 8 c4 qf6? I want to be able to take back with my e-pawn if he plays cd. (8 g6! was the correct way to do this, with a reasonable game, a Stonewall without a bad bishop. What I learned from this game: The queen needs to stay available to protect the queenside light squares. 9 qb3 qb6 (9 qc7?! 10 ng5 ke7 11 ndf3 (11 e4!? h6 12 nxe6) 11 h6 12 nh4) 10 qa4 ngf6) 9 qb3! Immediately punishing me. It turns out that Charles is an expert in these Stonewall positions, while I'm a learner, having just taken up the Triangle system. He gives me a lesson. 9 O-O-O? Consistent, and suicidal. Now Chuck just rolls me. The opposite side castled position favors white, since (underappreciated by me) white's control of e5 snuffs out any black counter-attack on the kingside. $*+lt*vmt% $Oo+m+*Oo% $*+o+ow*+% $+*+o+o+*% $*+pp*+*+% $+q+*pn+*% $pp*n*ppp% $R*B*+rK*% (9 rb8 was probably best at this point.) 10 qa4 +- kb8 11 b4 g5 12 bb2 g4?
