He had complete sight of the board and seldom blundered even though he moved quite rapidly. I've played over hundreds of his games and am continually surprised and entertained by his ingenuity. Bobby Fischer (on Morphy) I once heard of a murderer who propped his two victims up against a chessboard in sporting attitudes and was able to get as far as Seattle before his crime was discovered. 7 Report from Denker 2011 By Alex Wolf The Denker Tournament of High School Champions pits each state high school champion against each other in a 6 round, 4 day tournament in conjunction with the US Junior Girls Open and the newly formed Barber Tournament of K-8 Champions (the K-8 state champion from each state is invited to play). I represented Arkansas again this year, and Srikar Chikkala was the first ever Barber representative from Arkansas. I entered the tournament hoping to improve on last year's score of 2.5/6, and being almost 300 points higher rated this year I thought my chances of bettering last year's result were good. The first round saw me paired up with NM Joseph Moon from Georgia, and I misplayed a Classical Sicilian Dragon as white and lost fairly quickly. For round 2 I was paired down with Black against the Vermont representative David Ro, rated I essayed my usual Pirc Defense and successfully hunted down his uncastled king. David nonetheless recovered from the loss and won 3 of his last 4 games. The next round saw my most frustrating game of the tournament; I was paired up (slightly) against 1900 Jeffrey Byrd from Alabama. As White we played a Schliemann Ruy Lopez and he quickly developed a threatening attack on my kingside. Nevertheless I was able to parry all his threats and he desperately sacked a piece to attempt to open up my king. The time control was the FIDE-rated 90 mins + 30 second increment and I was under 20 minutes for most of the match, which contributed to my missing his promotional tactic late in the piece up endgame and resigning with about 2 minutes left on my clock. Standing at 1/3 going into the Monday morning round, I knew that as I was situated at the Swiss break point I would play either an expert or a beginner. Luck paired me with the 475-rated Patrick Ellsworth, from the rarely represented District of Columbia. I played a King's Indian/Old Indian hybrid and quickly broke apart the center and won with ease. That night my fifth round pairing was with a strong player who so far had a disappointing score (for him); 2125 Graham Horobetz from Memphis, Tennessee. I've talked and played Graham on ICC and he is known as a prodigious blitz and bullet player, with a quick rating nearly as high as his regular. I was White, and he played the Sicilian Accelerated Dragon. I was able to fix his hanging c6 and d5 pawns, lock in his light-squared bishop, and methodically crush him and convert a winning endgame. In the game Graham only took about 20 minutes, and I could sense he wouldn't look deeply into the position, only using the quick tactical eye that won him so many online blitz games but is insufficient at a slow time control. I had already met expectations for my result, and with no real pressure on me I approached the last round just looking to play solid chess. I had Black against NM Vincent Huang from Southern California, a strong master who has some international youth chess experience. Playing the KID, I achieved a reasonable position out of the opening, attempting to lock up the center and then play on the queenside. However I misplayed a sequence of early middlegame moves that allowed him to entrench a pawn on c5 that cramped my entire game and killed any chances of queenside play. I lashed out on the kingside in vain and stumbled into the endgame two pawns down before capitulating shortly thereafter. I had a great time at the Denker, meeting new friends and visiting old ones and seeing Michael Vilenchuk play superb chess and win the title with 5.5/6. It was a new experience to stay at a hotel physically inside an airport, which had its plusses and minuses (fast food close by but departing and arriving planes to wake you up)! I was proud to represent our state and to see Srikar fight hard in the Barber (which was of nearly equal strength). I hope to play the Denker next year, where it will be in Vancouver, Washington and about 30 degrees cooler than Orlando! Pg 7
