2 4 th World Computer-Chess Championship th Computer Olympiad Turin, Italy May 25, 26 Bulletin On May 25, 5. hours the players meeting of the 4 th WCCC in the Oval in Turin started. After a welcome to world champion Anthony Cozzie and some statements on the organisation the number of participants was set to 8 since two participants did not show up and two informed us in advance that they withdraw for private reasons. The other two authors informed us later that they were unable to participate for different reasons. All in all the tournament started with 8 participants that would play rounds according to the Swiss system. The proposed ranking and drawing of lots (Zappa obtained white) led to the following pairing in the first round. The results are given below together with a brief impression and the games. Round Zappa ParSOS Shredder Delfi 4.6 Spike Uragano3d Diep Chaturanga Ikarus Jonny Rajlich Isichess MMX Junior Chiron Crafty FibChess Lion ++.5 ETABETA The most exciting game of the first round was between Zappa and Jonny. White had some advantage from opening play but it was difficult something tangeable out of it. At one moment black decided to play g5 and it looked that white could make profit from this weakening. However, black counted adequately and fight continued meanwhile both players spend much time on the calculations in particular Jonny. After 6 moves and four hours of play we entered the last half hour for both sides to complete the game. At the beginning of this phase play was of an acceptable level but at the end programs looked only one or two ply deep and

3 played unexpected moves. The final outcome was a draw and the only remark which is justified here is that this is the correct outcome for the players and the public. There was one more game which ended with two lone kings. In itself it is already remarkable that among 9 games 2 games end with four Kings only. In the game spike-chiron we saw a balanced fight with all kind of intrigate plans and many trouvailles. The difference of the small exchange versus a pawn was an imposition at both sides. Black as well as white reacted according to the requirements of the position and so the draw was the correct outcome. Title contender Rajlich faced many difficulties in its game against parsos. Nevertheless enlarging the pressure and resolving problems with inactive pieces helped him to bring parsos into a difficult position. Finally Rajlich won deservedly. Junior played according to its own style, its sacrificed the pawn for active play and it won accordingly. Shredder, Crafty and Diep won their game by outplaying the opponent. Replaying this game is advisible to see how techniques of the better programs work. Lion and Ikarus won their game and announced that they are contenders for a good place in the middle of the pack. All in all this 4 th WCCC started with much excitement. By the speed of reporting we did not mention the opening ceremony. Pictures were made of FIDE board member Makropolis playing the first move at Zappa's game and Petra Leeuwerik playing the first move at ParSOS game. Qc Qe2# - Bulletin 3 May 26, 8. hours the third round started. The game of Diep started at nineteen hours since many spectators had subscribed to this game as direct followers. Everybody who looked at this game and the other games must have had a very enjoyable evening since many games were very attractive. The results of the round are published below. From the standings it looks like the old times are returning since Shredder and Junior are on the lead with 3 out of 3. Shredder played a well thought maneuver by the pawn advancement f4 f5 f6. The complications were clear for an experienced chess player and certainly for a world class program. After Bishop h6 the move Rook e8 would be refuted by Ng5. Shredder won the exchange and although he had to overcome many obstacles he won the game deservedly. The win by Junior over Spike was a tough fight but Junior was simply the better player. Zappa outclassed Chiron and Crafty did so with Ikarus. So far Delfi and Lion ++ did very well as newcomers in this WCCC. In round 3 they were opponents and Lion proved to be the stronger program. The good old programs Jonny and ParSOS regained some territory by winning against Urangano3d and Etabeta respectively. Rxg2 Ke5 - Bulletin 4 May 26, the fourth round started with a protest on the code of one of the programs. It gave a delay of the start of the round for at least one match. The tournament director and the assistant tournament director decided to investigate this situation seriously and after one hour the round was in full swing. Since the investigations are not definitely concluded we restrict ourselves to the results of this round. The top meeting Junior-Shredder was an exciting fight in which Junior reached a winning position but Shredder had much counterplay in a very tactical situation. The unbalanced material at both sides gave black unexpected changes. With many tactical tricks black even managed to keep the position. The draw that resulted kept both programs at the first place. World champion Zappa did not manage to reach also a top position since it had to concede in a draw to Rajlich. The game was a tough fight but no side ever had a real chance to win. Diep played with black a Sicilian game to Lion++ and won convincingly. So it came next to Zappa on a tight third place. Jonny won against Chiron whereas Crafty drew against Spike. The game was rather long but the result was fair. ParSOS and Isichess catched up their position and are now at 5%. By winning its game against Etabeta FibChess left the last position and scored its first point. Round 4 Junior Rajlich Shredder Zappa

This bulletin brings you up to date with what happened during this round. In the previous bulletin we mentioned a protest. Close investigation of the code of the participant Lion++.5 revealed that their work could not b e characterized as original work. It is true that the team had edit many features to the code but in principal structure and contents were still closely related to the original ùfruitcode (some would like us to refer to Toga2). The tournament director decided before round 5 that the objections were valid so at the start of this round he decided to remove them from the participants list. Since the team made an appeal he decided to let them play in round 5 and await the decision of the cie of appeal. In a regular game Spike won against Lion++.5 which is reproduced below. In the evening session the cie of appeal consisting of David Levy, Yngvi Bjornsson and Rudolf Huber unanimously rejected the appeal and agreed with the decision by the tournament director. It implied that Lion does not longer participate in the 4 th WCCC. As stated above the games were very exciting too. Diep played for a long time out of his book and post many problems to Junior. The Israelian program defended quite adequately and it turned out that perpetual check was a logical outcome. However, in the Diep program unexpectedly a window popped up with a question 'transpose to other variation'. Nobody understood what it meant. The operator of Diep in a direct reaction answered 'no'. After some discussion the play was continued under the supervising eye of the tournament director. The result was draw by repetition. Thereafter the position was rebuild up to the popping up of the window and the tournament director gave the answer yes. The same variation was played. So the tournament director established and decided that the game was drawn. The explanation by Vincent Diepeveen (for personal reasons he is not present in Turin) over the telephone was that the pop-up window had to do with the way of storing the moves in the data structure. The Junior team appealed for another result. The cie of appeal rejected the appeal by Junior and stated that the decision by the tournament director to declare the game a draw was correct. The cie of appeal gave the tournament director the task to give the operator of Diep an official warning for answering questions

16 without prior informing the tournament director. In the tournament Shredder drew with Zappa which resulted in no change at the top positions. Rajlich and Jonny arrived at a top position by defeating their opponent Crafty and ParSOS respectively. In the lower part Ikaros Uragano3d and Chaturanga improved their position by winning their game. Chiron and Delfi played a draw. The four top matches all ended in a draw. It was not a question that they did not fight or did not want to fight but simply of being of equal strength. The result of the four draws is of course that there was no significant change in the interrelated standings at the top. So, Shredder and Junior remain in the lead as if Zappa had not existed in Reykjavik in 25. The new programs Zappa and Rajlich (the experimental version of Rybka) are now in the role of rummer-up. They are accompanied by Jonny and Diep who both have also 4 points. Metaphorically speaking it was a black day for the tournament since the other four matches had a black player as a winner. This implied that Crafty, Delfi, Uragano and

22 ParSOS considerably approved their position. It is now clear from the standings after round 6 that the new Italian programs are not experienced in playing such tough tournaments as the other programs.
