ECU NEWSLETTER December 2018 ECU COMMISSIONS AND NOMINATIONS TO FIDE COMMISSIONS The ΕCU Board welcomed the expression of interest by a large number of applicants and appointed the members for the ECU Commissions and the European representatives for the FIDE Commissions. The criteria that were used for the selections were: (a) The applications received through the open call of interest and the qualifications of the applicants (b) The proposals by the ECU Commissions Chairmen (c) The wide representation (d) The implementation of the ECU Board policies in key areas. ECU notes that a number of remarkable applicants had already applied and to FIDE and have been selected by FIDE for certain tasks, so they couldn t be selected and by ECU as the rule agreed with FIDE is that each individual could participate only to one FIDE Commission. The commissions compositions are as follows:

Sincerely, Theodoros Tsorbatzoglou ECU Secretary General CIRCULAR LETTER No COMMUNIQUE OF THE ECU BOARD Circular Letter No. 4/ Communique of the ECU Board The European Chess Union Board meeting took place on 7 th of December in Skopje, FYR of Macedonia. The meeting was held under excellent conditions in the hotel Aleksandar Palace during the European Individual Rapid & Blitz Chess Championship The President of the National Chess Federation, Mr. Blagoja Bogoevski, opened the meeting and welcomed the ECU Board in Skopje.

6 The main areas under discussion and decisions made were the following: Appointments Arkadij Naiditsch (AZE) is appointed as the ECU Commercial Director Erald Dervishi (ALB) appointed as ECU CEO and Ms. Tea Kipshidze (GEO) as ECU Marketing Director at the Board meeting in Batumi on 4 th of October The Chairmen of ECU Commissions appointed by the ECU President at the Board meeting in Batumi Educational Commission: Mr. Jesper Hall (SWE) Arbiters Council: Mr. Tomek Delega (POL) Events Commission: Mr. Blagoja Bogoevski (MKD) Women s Commission: Mr. Jean Michel Rapaire (MNC) The ΕCU Board welcomed the expressions of interest by a large number of applicants and appointed the members for the ECU Commissions and the European representatives for the FIDE Commissions. The commissions compositions will be announced in a separate press release.

7 Program of Support in National and European Level It was agreed that ECU in co-operation with the National federations-members will launch a program of communication in the ministerial level with the scope to boost the National chess programs supporting where is possible the members budgets through the National structures. Main point is to activate all members in chess projects assisting to financially strong, independent and transparent chess institutions. A working group was created under the supervision of the ECU Vice President Mrs. Dana Reizniece Ozola to establish contacts with the European Union institutions and submit proposals to the EU annual funding programs. ECU Board noted that EU is already one the biggest supporters of Chess in Schools projects approving a number of proposals as the Castle project and the Chess & Mathematics which results already have been adopted by the ECU Educational Commission. The preliminary work and the key actions for the main project to be submitted has already completed by the ECU Educational Committee. Standardization & Information Technology

8 The ECU Board emphasized the significance of standardization in various areas. Proposals discussed, planned and approved on the following directions: The dress code for the ECU Arbiters. Scheduled to be implemented by the European Teams Chess Championships 2019 in Batumi, Georgia. The development of special software for the selection and evaluation of the Chess Arbiters for the European Championships. The development of special statistical database for the broadcasting of the European Championships. The standardization of the TV and online productions for the ECU major Competitions. For that purpose, ECU Board decided to make an open nonbinding tender to receive proposals and offers. Innovative IT projects approved and will be announced on due time. European Championships The European Senior Team Chess Championship 2020 is awarded as a sole bid to Wroclaw, Poland. The European Youth Team Chess Championship 2020 is awarded as a sole

9 bid to Halkidiki, Greece. The option of the 2nd European Corporate Chess Championship is awarded to Minsk, Belarus to be organized from 1st to 4th March The winner of the event may qualify (with free entry) for the European Business Gala a new event under consideration. The European Small Nation Teams Championship 2019 will be organized in San Marino from 23rd to 31st March Due to many requests from players the European Club Cup 2019 scheduled to start in Montenegro on 6th November 2019, was moved for few days, in order to be enough time for convenient travel from the European Team Championship 2019 scheduled n Batumi, Georgia from 23 October to 3 November New dates for ECCC2019 are November 2019 (Saturday to Sunday). ECU Board decided to qualify for the World Chess Cup 2019 both players, rd who tied, with all tiebreak criteria the same, on the 23 position of European Individual Chess Championship 2018, GM Anton Guijarro David (ESP) and GM Mircea Emilian Paligras (ROU). ECU extraordinary General Assembly With reference to the decision of the ECU General Assembly 2018 in Batumi, Georgia and the postponement of bids decisions the ECU Board confirmed the ECU extraordinary General Assembly to be held in Skopje, FYR of Macedonia, during the European Individual Championship 2019, on Saturday 23rd of March with the following three (3) items: Decisions on the bids for the events which already have been submitted in April 2018 Reallocation of the ECU budget 2019 Amendments on the ECU Tournament rules The detailed invitation and the agenda of the meeting will be sent on due time. 10 Theodoros Tsorbatzoglou ECU Secretary General EUROPEAN RAPID&BLITZ CHAMPIONSHIP CONCLUDED INDIVIDUAL CHESS 2018 The European Individual Rapid&Blitz Chess Championships 2018 took place from 5th-9th December in Skopje, FYR of Macedonia. After four days of fights, the Winner of European Blitz Championship became twenty years old Russian player Artemiev Vladislav (RUS, 2825 blitz rtg), while the European Rapid Chess Champion became Popov Valerij (RUS, 2531 rapid rtg). The event has started with European Individual Blitz Chess Championship, which was played on 6th and 7th of December with participation of 311 players from 37 European federations. The winner of the event was already known after 21 played rounds, since Artemiev Vladislav had one and a half point more than the runner-

11 ups and won the Championship with a round to spare. With a draw in the last round, Artemiev claimed the title of European Blitz Chess Champion 2018 with score of 18.5 points. The second place went to Cheparinov Ivan (GEO, 2618 blitz rtg), while Navara David (CZE, 2707 blitz rtg) took bronze medal. Final rankings European Individual Rapid Chess Championship 2018 was played on 8th and 9th December, with participation of 395 players coming from 37 countries. After 13 played rounds, another Russian player, Popov Valerij, emerged on the top to become European Rapid Chess Champion The dramatic and very intense finish of the Championship ended with four players tying for gold: Popov Valerij (RUS, 2531 rapid rtg), and three youth competitors- 16 years old Esipenko Andrey (RUS rapid rtg), 20 years old Sanal Vahap (TUR, 2476 rapid rtg) and 18 years old Moroni Luca Jr (ITA, 2482 rapid rtg). According to the tiebreak system, the Winner was Popov Valerij, Esipenko Andrey took silver medal, Sanal Vahap was bronze, while Moroni Luca Jr ended on the 4th place. Final rankings

12 The total prize fund of the events was EUR EUR of special prizes. The special prizes were awarded to the best ranked player rated under 2600, the best ranked player rated under 2300, the best ranked players rated under 2000, the best ranked players rated under 1700, the best female players, the best senior players, the best Junior players and the best Macedonian players. The event was opened by the President of European Chess Union, Mr. Zurab Azmaiparashvili, while the ECU was represented on the closing ceremony by ECU Vice President, Mr. Ivan Sokolov. 13 EUROPEAN INDIVIDUAL BLITZ&RAPID CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2018 STARTED European Rapid&Blitz Chess Championship 2018 has been opened on 5th December with Opening ceremony, and has officially started yesterday with European Individual Blitz Chess Championship Already 10 rounds have been played at the Blitz Championship, which participate 324 players coming from 37 European federations, among whom are 20 players rated 2600+, and 4 players rated Currently, top seeder, Artemiev Vladislav (RUS, 2825 blitz rtg) ties with Salgado Lopez Ivan (ESP, 2513 blitz rtg), each with 9.5 points, while Navara David (CZE, 2707 blitz rtg) and Lobanov Sergei (RUS, 2434 blitz rtg) tie for the third place, each with 9 points.

14 The event continues today, at 11:00 (local time), when the round 11 will be started. Each day and in each round, 36 games can be followed live through the official website of the championship. Pairings, Standings and Rankings

15 The event will be continued with European Rapid Chess Championship 2018, which will be played on 8th and 9th of December, according to the Swiss system, in 13 rounds with the time control 15 minutes game + 10 seconds per move starting from the first move. 417 players from 37 countries registered for the event which can be followed live through the official website of the Championship. ECU NEWSLETTER November 2018 MAGNUS CARLSEN RETAINS THE TITLE OF THE WORLD CHESS CHAMPION Magnus Carlsen defended the FIDE World Chess Champion title after defeating the challenger Fabiano Caruana in the tiebreak match with 3 consecutive victories and result 3-0.

19 After all the twelve games of the regular part of the Championship ended in a draw, Carlsen and Caruana proceeded to a 4 rapid-games tiebreak match. Magnus Carlsen had the white pieces in the first game of the tiebreak match and picked to play the English opening. Carslen gained the small advantage already in the opening, but after the middlegame, Caruana equalized the position and the players entered the rooks endgame with Carlsen having the pawn up. Although the position was drawish, Caruana missed right moves order for draw, and Carlsen used that opportunity to get the lead already in the first round.

20 Caruana started sharply in the game two, and players repeated the Sveshnikov variation, when Carlsen surprised with 11 Qb8 and took the advantage very shortly after. Fabiano tried to keep the position sharp, but eventually blundered in the move 26th, and already two moves after, resigned.

21 Magnus Carlsen needed a draw in the last game, to remain the World Chess Champion position. He picked to play 1. e4 and Caruana answered with Sicilian with trying to find any possibility to prolong the fight. After a lot of exchanges, the position was equal, but it wasn t enough for Caruana to stay in the match, because he tried to find a way to break the position of whites. 22 EUROPEAN SENIOR CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP Official Regulations The European Senior Chess Championship 2019 will be held in the island of Rhodes, Greece, from 5th-15th April, simultaneously with European Amateur Chess Championship The events will be held in the Conference center of Olympic Palace Hotel, as the official hotel of the Championship. The European Senior Chess Championship is open to all players representing ECU Chess Federations who have been born in the year 1969 or earlier, regardless of their title or rating. There is also no limit in the number of participants per federation. Applications have to be sent by the National federations or to be approved by the National federations.

23 The registration for the event shall be done online by filling the entry form and sending it fulfilled to the organizers. Entries must be sent by the registration deadline 20 February 2019 by to: In accordance with the ECU tournament rule the Championship will be played in two categories: one for those who shall have reached the age of 50 (category SENIOR 50+), and one for those who shall have reached the age of 65 (category SENIOR 65+) by the end of the year Players who have reached the age of 65 by the 31st December 2019 are allowed to participate in the category SENIOR 50+ if they request it. In each age category an Open and a Women s competition is organized. There is also no limit of participants per federation.

24 The Championship is based on Swiss system in accordance with the ECU Tournament Rules and FIDE Rules of Chess. The playing time will be 90 minutes for 40 moves plus 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move, starting from move one. Women tournament will be played separately. If in total the women participants are less than nine they will play in the Open tournaments with separate prizes. The total prize fund of the event will be EUR.

26 CHAMPIONSHIP Official Regulations The European Amateur Chess Championship 2019 will be held in the island of Rhodes, Greece, from 5th-15th April, simultaneously with European Senior Chess Championship 2019.The events will be held in the Conference center of Olympic Palace Hotel, as the official hotel of the Championship. The Championships are open tournaments for players registered or approved by their federation. ECU member federations shall have the right to send as many players as they wish. All players must not hold any title above CM (or WCM for women) in the sections Under-1700 and Under All players must not hold any title above FM (or WFM for women) in the section Under-2300.

27 A player must not have a published FIDE rating of 2300 or greater for at least one year prior to the registration deadline of the event. For the Under-2000 section, a player must not have a published FIDE rating of 2000 or greater for at least one year prior to the start of the Championship. For the Under-1700 section, a player must not have a published FIDE rating of 1700 or greater for at least one year prior to the start of the championship. In case a player exceeds the rating of 1700 or 2000 after the registration deadline, he/she will play the upper rating category.

28 The registration for the event shall be done online by filling the entry form and sending it fulfilled to the organizers. 30 FIDE WORLD CHESS CHAMPION 2018 TO BE DETERMINED IN TIEBREAK MATCH After twelve rounds fulfilled with fights and harsh struggles, the reigning World Chess Champion, world number one, Magnus Carlsen, and the challenger, world number two, Fabiano Caruana, are still in a tie with a result 6-6, after all the games of the regular part of the Championship ended in a draw. Without a single decisive game, the defender of the title and the challenger will proceed to the tiebreak match of four games, which will determine the 2018 FIDE World Chess Champion. The tiebreak match will be played tomorrow, on 28th November, with time control 25 minutes for each player for the whole game, plus 10 seconds of an increment for each move, starting from move one.

31 Immediately after the last game of the regular match, the drawing of lots for the tiebreak match determined defender of the World Chess Champion title, Magnus Carlsen, to be white in the first game of tiebreaks. By the regulations of the event, if the first tiebreak match of four games ends in a

32 tie, the players will play a new match of 2 games with time control 5 minutes for the whole game, with 2 seconds of an increment for each move, starting from the move one. If event this match ends in a tie, the Champion will be determined in the Armageddon game. The last four games of the FIDE World Chess Championship match ended in a draw even were moments of complications and high tension. The game nine started with English opening, with Magnus having the white pieces. Caruana equalized the position very early, and kept it around the draw until the dead draw in the endgame with opposite color bishops and two pawns on the both sides.

33 Caruana took the white pieces in the 10th game, and started with open Sicilian. Carlsen managed to create the attack on the White king, but without a realization, and the players proceeded to a drawish rooks endgame where Caruana had a useless pawn up and the game ended in a draw.

34 The penultimate 11th game of the match ended in a tie very fast, with exchange of the Queens in the 13th move. After exchange of the rooks, Carslen took the pawn, but couldn t use the advantage in the endgame with opposite color bishops. The last game of the match again started sharply, with Caruana entering the open Sicilian. Even though expectations were big, Magnus took the advantage in the very early part of the middlegame, but in the move 31 offered a draw in a slightly better position, which was accepted by Caruana.

35 The tiebreak match which will determine who will take the title of FIDE World Chess Championship 2018 will take place tomorrow and can be watched online through the official website of the Championship together with live commentary done by GM Judit Polgar and IM Anna Rudolf.
