Brother Knights, I hope your summer was eventful and fun filled. I am looking forward to a nice and busy fall season. We have all heard a lot about all the issues regarding the attacks on our religious freedom. The November elections will be coming up soon. Make sure you exercise your right to vote and protect our rights as Christians and citizens of this great U.S.A. The Upcoming Events page lists some great ways to serve others and meet new people. Join us for a meeting or let me know ( and cell phone above) if you can lend a hand. At St. Patrick Church, there are baskets in the back of church to collect food and personal care items for the Portland food bank. Please, take time to donate a few items as often as you can. There is a great need for this program. The Knights of Columbus see that the food items are taken to the Portland Area Food Bank for distribution. Vivat Jesus, Bill Upcoming Degree Initiations: Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism To be a Knight is to say, I am a proud Catholic gentleman. We will be hosting an Admission (First) Degree Initiation on October 16 at 11:00 AM with Second and Third Degree at 12:30 PM with a light dinner to follow. First Degree costs include a $10 initiation fee and prorated annual dues. Second and Third Degrees are provided at no cost to candidates. These steps through your knighthood are great experiences that you shouldn t miss. Also, the Fourth Degree Exemplification will be held on Saturday, November 5 in Lansing. This is the patriotic degree. I feel this is the most amazing of all of the initiations. Fourth Degree members usually comment that they wished they would have gone through sooner. Additionally, some Fourth Degree members choose to participate in the color corps. I hope to hear from you about moving forward in your knighthood. Also, take a minute to ask someone to join or provide their names to me.

2 Ionia Social Club On October 19, Steve Goodman, with the help of fellow Knights, will host an annual event for the Ionia Social Club. The club is a special needs group that gets together a few times a year to share a meal and games. There are about 35 club members and about as many caretakers that participate for a great time. Contact Steve ( ) to lend a hand. Keep Christ in Christmas From SK Ken Watterson The 2016 Christmas season is fast approaching, and again we will have an opportunity to put a little something back. We will assist in bringing the gift of Jesus, the True meaning of the holiday, back into the Christmas season, through the posting of full size billboards around the State. 54 Councils and Assemblies in Mid-Michigan participated last year and we wish to build on that. As the Advent and Christmas seasons approach, watch for Knights after Mass, at Bingo, and Euchre parties, or contact Bill Vallier to purchase yard signs: plastic corrugated signs for $10 each and heavy cardstock signs for $5 each. Also, our council will be sponsoring a billboard at a discounted rate through Adams Outdoor Advertising. Message from Our Insurance Agent: Raising Awareness About Life Insurance Each September since 2003 has been designated as Life Insurance Awareness Month. Like most awareness-raising campaigns, Life Insurance Awareness Month was created because there is an overwhelming lack of understanding of life insurance, its uses, its benefits, and its variations among the general public. Each year, the Life Insurance Market Research from a recent survey, and unfortunately, the numbers they report continue to be discouraging. A recent survey found that more than 75 percent of people polled did not have a personal financial advisor, even though 68 percent of them said their opinion of the current economic conditions was somewhat unfavorable or very unfavorable. In other words, a majority of those surveyed were uncomfortable with the economy and the uncertainty it brings, yet they did not seek professional assistance. Maybe they spoke with their friends and family. Maybe they hoped the instability would go away on its own. Maybe they did not know to whom to turn. If you fall into this category, please remember that as a member of the Knights of Columbus, you have a full-time, professional agent you can call your own. My primary responsibility is the care and service of your family s life insurance, retirement and long-term care needs. I ll answer your questions because I want your decisions to be informed ones. I want to help. Another LIMRA statistic said 43 percent of people did not buy life insurance because they worry about making the wrong decision. 5 Knights of Columbus Portland Council 2168 Building Corporation 12 Month Raffle Each ticket costs $50 and automatically enters the ticket holder in 12 drawings over the next calendar year. Three tickets will be drawn at the regular business meeting each month at the Knights Hall, where Portland Council 2168 holds regular meetings. Monthly Prizes: 1 st Ticket Drawn - $100 2 nd Ticket Drawn - $50 3 rd Ticket Drawn - $50 Winning tickets are returned to the pool of 100 tickets and are eligible for each month s drawing! The raffle will begin Monday, December 5, 2016, immediately following the regular business meeting. You need not be present to win. Winners will be promptly notified by phone or mail following the drawing each month. This raffle gives you a chance to win cash prizes throughout the year as well as helping finance council expenses. Remember there will be twelve $ winners and twenty four $50.00 winners and the winning tickets will be put back into the drawing at the conclusion of each drawing. This enables you to win again another month. ONLY 100 TICKETS WILL BE SOLD. Ticket sales are on a first come first serve basis. Should your ticket request arrive after the last ticket was sold you will be first in line the following year if you are still interested.
