5 math + < summer practice = # MATH ACTIVITIES Count by 10s off the decade (i.e. 23, 33, 43, etc.). Find geometric shapes, both 2-D and 3-D in your house. For 2-D shapes, count the sides and vertices (corners). For 3-D shapes, count the faces and edges. Name the shapes based on the number of sides vertices or facesedges. Look for examples of Friends of 10 when you re at the store (I see a 3 and a 7). Find the measurements of objects around the house using nonstandard units (i.e. paper clips, beans, toothpicks, - The book is 4 toothpicks long ). Conduct surveys (favorite ice cream flavor, best movie, beach or pool, etc.) and create graphs for your results. Build anything and focus on the shapes being used. Name the shapes Look at license plates with numbers addsubtract the numbers you see. Face Fluency for sums up to 10 Fact Fluency Practice The MOST effective way to do this is through games, not flash cards or workbooks. The games work best when kids and grown-ups are playing together. Have fun together. Practice addition fluency by strategy (+1, doubles, double +1, friends of 10, make a 10). Finish one strategy before going on to the next. Only introduce 2 new facts a day while still practicing the facts that have already been mastered. MATH ACTIVITIES FOR ALL GRADE LEVELS Sudoku puzzleslogic puzzlesbrainteasers Make a scrapbook that highlights the main topics of study from this year in math Play some games most games involve logic andor math skills examples: Monopoly, Clue, Checkers, Chess, Blokus, Cribbage, Mastermind, various card games, Dominoes, Yahtzee, Battleship, Life, etc. Play Guess my Number Like 20 questions, but with numbers. Talk about the type of question that will give information to make a good guess. Is it an odd number vs. Is it 5? Adjust parameters for different levels. OTHER WAYS TO ENCOURAGE MATHEMATICAL THINKING Ask your child how they came up with an answer or what they were thinking. Ask your child to come up with an alternative strategy to solve a problem. Ask your child to defend their answer or prove why they agreedisagree with an answer.
