Leslie has been President of the Downeast Chapter of Maine Audubon since 2004, and is fervent about environmental education and habitat preservation. Her images are stunning reminders of the delight in nature like this singing Northern Parula that we might find in our own backyards. 7 W elcome to the world of birding and art on Deer Isle! Although reachable by bridge, this island still retains the flavor of New England life in the 1950s: rural, neighborly, safe. Our welcome sign could read Welcome to Deer Isle, the way Life used to be. Lobstering is the mainstay of the economy and granite is still quarried here. Internationally renowned Haystack Mountain School of Crafts has brought many artists and artisans to the island. Their galleries, studios and workshops dot the island. A good way to get oriented to the local art scene is to attend the fabulous annual Wings, Waves & Woods exhibit on Friday evening. The archipelago of islands that comprises Deer Isle covers about 8 square miles. There is nothing linear about this convoluted granite shoreline, pocked by tiny coves and small working harbors, and rimmed with tidal flats, prime feeding grounds for shorebirds. By mid-may the spring migration has begun in earnest, bringing waves of warblers and other breeding songbirds from their wintering grounds to the south. More than a dozen pairs of Bald Eagles choose Deer Isle and surrounding islands to nest and rear their young. One such nest is very visible from the Causeway Beach with a spotting scope. Deer Isle is considered the southern boundary for boreal species like the Boreal Chickadee and Black-backed Woodpecker. Possible sightings along the shore include Purple Sandpiper, Black Guillemot, Ruddy Turnstone and Red-throated Loon. Offshore nesting islands and outer waters are likely to offer sightings of Arctic Tern, Atlantic Puffin, Razorbills, Northern Gannets, Common Murres and Great Cormorant. Some of the best birding is found on quiet, out-of-the-way dirt roads and there are miles of trails on the twelve nature preserves. Well-known trip guides Bob and Sandi Duchesne are with us all weekend, as well as naturalist Kathie Fiveash, and the most experienced and active birders in the area. Boat tours offer an up-close look at seabirds, as well as seals and porpoises. Thanks to a thriving arts community, we are able to offer a variety of workshops by artists who know this habitat and its creatures well. Wings, Waves & Woods is unabashedly informal, welcoming to beginners and families, and a great way to explore Deer Isle. Check the schedule for new offerings, including an exciting trip to Marshall Island, an outdoor sketching workshop, and a new walk at Goose Cove. A special birder s supper at the Harbor Café on Saturday (tickets available at IHT) is followed by Leslie Clapp s evening presentation right next door in the Stonington Town Hall. Leslie s Northern Parula on this year s poster is a sample of her remarkable photography. Registration packets ($) contain a wealth of useful information and resources, including a bird list, nature preserve info, maps, Island Guide, special weekend coupons offered by island businesses and the coveted WWW cap. Packets are available at the opening reception of FIELDWORK at the Deer Isle Artists Association Gallery and at Island Heritage Trust.
