Cat Tien National Park April 2011 Tan Kok Hui, Danny Lau and Lau Jia Sheng Introduction In late February, on the last Saturday of the month, the idea of visiting Cat Tien was raised and within less than a week, we had a birdwatching trip to look forward to - all thanks to Richard Craik and Vietnam Birding for making all the arrangements. Logistics Accommodation For the trip, Richard had arranged for us 3-nights stay in a triple sharing room at the HQ and a 2nd(Sunday's) night stay in a triple-sharing room at Crocodile Lake, which we had to give a miss for reasons related to our objectives. Transportation To reach Cat Tien NP from Ho Chi Minh Airport, Richard had arranged a driver to pick us up. Although it is possible and cheaper to reach Cat Tien NP using the public transport, we felt more comfortable to have a prearranged vehicle and it just boils down to personal preference. Within the NP, we hired a jeep (aka lorry) to take us to the various sites. Below are the vehicle-hire fees we paid: a) HQ-Entrance of Bau Sau Trail (30min): 300,000VND b) Whole-day jeep hire (maximum of 8h): 1,000,000VND *Note: Only with Whole-day jeep hire will the driver stop as and when we requested. This would come to use in the wee hours of the morning on the dirt track to the entrance of Crocodile Lake or when birding along the Heaven's Rapid Track and the western grassland.

Initial Itinerary (Planned before trip) 02/04/11 - Day 1: Arrive at Cat Tien NP approx 1530h. Bird along main road to "bathing point". Owling along Main Road. 3 Day-to-Day Account 02/04/11 - Day 1 We arrived at Cat Tien NP at approx. 1500h. During the journey from airport to Cat Tien NP, we saw >3 pairs of Indian Rollers, 1 pair of Black-Winged Kites, 1 plain prinia, a couple of unid egrets, many Brown Shrikes, Eurasian Tree Sparrows, House Swifts and Streak-Eared Bulbuls. From h, we bird along the main road to the "1st Bathing Point", which is located at the 1st dry rocky stream after the Forest Lodge. Notable Birds seen along the main road: Heart-Spotted Woodpeckers (1 male and female), Rufescent Prinia (1), Golden-Fronted Leafbird (1 singing male), many Green-Billed Makolhas, White-Bellied Woodpecker (1), Rufous Treepie (1 squarish, long-tailed silhouette seen by Danny and it responded to playback with a short song from deep inside the forest.), Japanese Sparrowhawk (1 juvenile with short 6th primaries.), Great Slaty Woodpecker (1) and White-Throated Rock-Thrush (1 beautiful male moulting into breeding plumage). Notable Birds Seen at "1st Bathing Point" Tickell's Blue Flycatcher (1 pair), Scaly-Crowned Babbler (>2), Siberian Blue Robin (1 pair) and White-Rumped Shama (1) were seen bathing from h. Walking around the bathing point using the rock path, I had distressed many skulkers, which may have led to a rather poor turnout during the bathing session. Additionally, from my previous experience of bathing forest birds, last light would be the best time to see the elusive skulkers bathing ie forest crakes and thrushes. We had left a bit too early, seeing only the early bathers, e.g. flycatchers, robins and babblers. Worth visiting especially for photographers. Notable Birds during last light Spot-Bellied Eagle Owl (1 suspected bird flew from tree to tree, across the main road before calling deep inside the forest.) and many Great-eared Nightjars.

03/04/11 - Day 2 Notable Birds seen along the journey ( h) from HQ to entrance of Bau Sau Trail Siamese Fireback (1 beautiful male was flushed as the jeep could not be stopped) Notable Birds seen along the Bau Sau Trail ( h) Germain's Peacock Pheasant (1 pair was seen crossing the trail by Kok Hui), Tickell's Blue Flycatcher (1 singing male) Notable Birds seen along the boardwalk from the Ranger Station to the Watch Tower ( h) Racket-Tailed Treepie (1 pair), Grey-Faced Tit Babbler (1 pair came up so close that from the boardwalk, we could touch the vine that it spent a few seconds climbing. During those moments, the distinction between this species and the commoner striped tit babbler is evident: Short, faint streaks limited to breast, Grey supercilium. Maybe the rufous-fronted babbler would pose a greater challenge?), Asian Golden Weaver (2 glorious breeding males embracing the sun on the elephant grass), Buff-Breasted Babbler (1 pair seen hopping around the piping on the left side of the boardwalk) On the return journey, 1 worn dusky warbler (Brownish rear-end of supercilium and greyish upperparts were used to confirm the id) was seen near the bamboo thickets at the side of the Ranger station. Notable Birds seen from Watch Tower ( h) Pied Kingfisher (2 seen chasing each other), Little Cormorant (1) and Oriental Darters (A total count of 11 sunning individuals on the bamboo.) Notable Birds seen along the HQ Trail ( h) Abbott's Babbler (1 pair seen in the bamboo at the entrance), Tickell's Blue Flycatcher (1 male joined a mini birdwave at the 3- way junction.) Notable Birds seen along the 25-km Elephant-Signed Trail ( h) Narcissus Flycatcher (1 gorgeous male gave us prolonged views for digestion of the subtle differences between its underparts, including its graduated undertail, and the spring yellow-rumped flycatcher's.), Blue-Rumped Pitta (Nothing short of spectacular to see a pitta hopping like a babbler and freezing upright when alerted. On hindsight, its peach-coloured face resembles that of the adorable peach-faced lovebirds. - Jia Sheng) Additionally, Jia Sheng flushed 1 unid dark-coloured, thrush-sized, shortish-tailed and dark-billed bird which gave an alarm metallic blue-flycatcher-like flight call. At that point of time, he suspected that it was a White-tailed Robin or a Whistling Thrush.

04/04/11 - Day 3 Notable Birds seen at HQ ( h) Changeable Hawk Eagle (1 dark-morphed individual was seen flying across the HQ from the Dong Nai River. Dark plumage and lack of obvious barrings /markings on upperwing /uppertail /underwing /undertail are conclusive identification features for birds in Singapore but in Vietnam, we are leaving it as a probable CHE due to our lack of exposure to the occurring raptors.) Notable Birds seen along the HQ Trail ( h) Asian Barred Owlet (1 individual was seen being chased to a bare perch by smaller birds. Our first owl for the trip and the group's 2nd owl species sighted outside Singapore.) Notable Birds seen along the 25-km Elephant-Signed Trail ( h) Puff-Throated Babbler (1 bird came to check out Jia Sheng's whistle but proved too skittish for tame views.) Notable Birds seen along the 1st 2.5km of Bau Sau Trail ( h) Germain's Peacock Pheasant (1h), Siamese Fireback (1 pair), Bar-Bellied Pitta (1 pair was flushed from higher rocky ground to a mossy fallen log, about 7-8m from the trail. The male pitta stayed for few seconds on a mossy rock, allowing good views of the yellow, thinly-barred underparts, blue central belly/vent and its light jade-green head. Unfortunately, only JIa Sheng and Kok Hui saw the birds.), Orange-Breasted Trogon (1 male was seen boring holes on a dead standing trunk- aptly described by its name, "trogon", which means "nibbling... refer to the fact that these birds gnaw holes in trees to make their nests" [Abstracted from Wikipedia] Maybe the boring is a sign of breeding activity?), Red-Headed Trogon (1 redhindnecked male was flushed together with the pittas.) and Scaly-Crowned Babbler (1 pair was seen busily constructing a nest.)

Notable Birds seen at the entrance of Bau Sau Trail ( h) Violet Cuckoo (1 adult female was seen trying to locate the nest of a pair of gerygones in a tree. The sneaky bird was finally chased away by one of the owners.), Black Hooded Oriole (1 nesting pair. Nothing is more memorable than watching the pair taking turns to incubate the eggs in an ant-nest like nest while being swarmed by bees attracted to our sweats.) Notable Birds seen along Heaven's Rapid Trail ( h) Pale-Headed Woodpecker (1 individual was heard before flying across the trail onto an exposed section of a trunk to give us some brief views of his red crown and red wing. We would love to have seen the bird on foot but due to the legislated maximum of 8 working hours per day, we could not afford time to walk the trail - birding on the jeep was the best option then. Subsequently, we had a calling pair that took turns to check us up after we playbacked their song - our first notable success with playback.) Notable Birds seen along the Western Grassland trail at the ranger station ( h) Chestnut-Capped Babbler (1 of this beautiful grassland babbler gave us good views when it perched at the top of the elephant grass.) and Indochinese Cuckooshrike (1 male bird called his lungs out on a bare perch.)

Notable Birds seen at the Western Grassland ( h) Pied Bushchat (1 breeding male was spotted from afar and was cooperative to give us good views on the scope.), Plain-Backed Sparrow (1 male), Bright-Headed Cisticola (1 breeding individual was brave enough to reveal itself to Kok Hui. Otherwise, a typical heard-only species.), Thick-Billed Warbler (1 individual popped out from the grasses at last light and stayed in the open briefly, allowing us to identify this bulbul-like warbler sp.), Blossom-Headed Parakeet (1 large flock of 7 individuals perched on a bare tree for a prolonged period of time. Thankfully, Kok Hui took the hassle to check this parakeet flock and discovered that they were different from the red-breasted parakeet. With experience of escapees from this species in Singapore, he easily identified them as Blossom-Headed Parakeet. Distinguishing feature would be the maroon wing-patch. This may be the first record of this species in the Cat Tien NP.) Notable Birds seen at HQ (1830h onwards) Brown Hawk Owl (1 bird was seen leaving his roost on a tree beside the badminton court. A reproduced call by Jia Sheng got the excited calling bird to perch on a bare tree in front of us. Thereafter, it flew off to join another individual on another tree and they playfully hopped about on the branches. What a sight and our 3rd owl species sighted outside of Singapore.)

05/04/11 - Day 4 Notable Birds seen at HQ (0550h-0600h) Changeable Hawk Eagle (probably the same dark-morphed individual) Notable Birds seen along the Main Road to the entrance of Lagerstroemia Trail ( h) Grey-Throated Babbler (1 pair of calling birds) Notable Birds seen along Lagerstroemia Trail ( h) Greater Yellownape (1 pair), Tickell's Blue Flycatcher (1 singing female), Siberian Blue Robin (1 adult male and female) Notable Birds seen along Main Road to HQ ( h) Large Cuckooshrike (1 singing bird on a bare perch.) and we heard the Scaly-Breasted Partridge singing in the bamboo opposite the entrance of Lagerstroemia Trail. Notable Birds seen along the 25-km Elephant-Signed Trail ( h) Bar-Bellied Pitta (1 pair was seen by Jia Sheng, attempting to cross the road until his presence changed their mind.), Orange-Necked Partridge (1 individual was seen by Jia Sheng "scratching" the ground by the side of the trail near the pittas before it sensed danger and ran off into the thickets. At a point of time, it looked at Jia Sheng, giving him good views of its throat gorget/ contrasting black eyestripe, bright collared-laughingthrush orange breast band and red legs. What a rare find!) Thereafter, we concluded our trip and home sweet home.
