2 Bolivia - Highlands Tour Leader: Jose Antonio Padilla Naturetrek guide Participants: Debby Reynolds David Copas Lesley Staves Jane Andrews Tour summary Our tour successfully covered Bolivia s topographical diversity and great variety of highland habitats. We stayed in four different cities: Cochabamba, Oruro, La Paz and Coroico. A dozen endemics were recorded including marvellous views of the endangered Black-hooded Sunbeam, Cochabamba Mountain-Finch and Berlepch s Canastero, and Rufous-faced Antpitta was heard. We also recorded numerous regional endemics. Some shared with Southern Peru were Three-striped Hemispingus, Orange-Browed Hemispingus and Light-crowned Spinetail whilst others shared with northwest Argentina included, Rufous-bellied Saltator, Wedge-tailed Hillstar and Maquis Canastero. Other group favourites during the trip included Golden-collared Tanager, Chestnut-bellied Mountain Tanager, Rosy-billed Pochard, Crested Quetzal and Titicaca Flightless Grebe. Day 1 Tuesday 28 th October The group arrived at Cochabamba and we spent the night at the Regina Hotel. Day 2 Wednesday 29 th October We spent the day at Cerro Tunari exploring montane forest, polylepis forest, puna grassland, lakes and rocky scree. Our maximum altitude during the day was 4,400 metres. Day 3 Thursday 30 th October Today we spent a full day exploring the new road to Santa Cruz, Tablas Monte, elfin forest and montane (Yungas) cloud forest. Our maximum altitude was 3,170 metres. We again spent the night at the Hotel Regina. Day 4 Friday 31 st October Again we visited the new road to Santa Cruz and at km96 explored the San Jose power pipeline road and secondary montane forest. We were at a lower altitude of 1,900 metres. Overnight at the Regina Hotel. Day 5 Saturday 1 st November Today was a travelling day as we drove from Cochabamba to Oruro crossing altiplano and puna grassland.
