2 Colombia - Multicolored Tanager Tour Tour participants: Ferney Saigado (manager), Edwin Campbell (local guide) and Hector (driver) with eight Naturetrek clients. Day 1 Thursday 9th Overnight flight from London to Bogota. Day 2 Friday 10th We arrived at Bogota International Airport and walked to the domestic side to meet one of the tour participants who had arrived a day early to see Bogota a tour she had enjoyed. The flight to Cali was delayed by around 40 minutes, but we were met at Cali Airport and made our way to the Cali Campestre Country Club for a very nice breakfast in beautiful surroundings. We familiarised ourselves with good views of a number of species, and then had a walk around the extensive and beautiful grounds, as the sun broke through the clouds. Huge iguanas resting in the tree tops and Agouti running around on the ground, together with a variety of stunning butterflies, added to the biodiversity. After three hours we had made a good list. We then left for Finca Lolita at KM18 (San Antonio). This is a beautiful little hotel, with lots of character and excellent food. On arrival at Lolita, we had great views of a Crimson-rumped Toucanet and masses of different hummers (hummingbirds). After a very nice, rather late, lunch we explored the grounds for a number of additional species, including Yellow-faced Grassquit at the only site we saw them on the trip. Day 3 Saturday 11th We left early for the Queremal Anchioaya road, stopping at Casa Donna for a good breakfast and more hummingbirds and tanagers, then in somewhat misty conditions down the road, stopping and walking around the road at various spots for a rich array of species. We had a packed lunch and later in the afternoon returned to Casa Donna for tea, and views of a pair of Toucan Barbets. The big tree on the property was laden with unripe fruit and in a few weeks other tours should find this a magnet for many fruit eaters. On the way back to Lolita, we stopped to see a male Lyre-tailed Nightjar roosting against a roadside cutting. Day 4 Sunday 12th We left Finca Lolita after dawn today, so a quick check of the feeders, where a family of Inca Jays had decided to drop by. We headed to Alejandra de Chorio along a narrow rural road on the ridge from San Antonio. This is a popular Sunday venue with locals, coming in groups for breakfast/lunch and to photograph the wonderful range of birds on the feeders. Here we met with a pair Multi-colored Tanagers giving excellent views and our only pair of the trip. We explored a length of the country road, seeing locals out cycling or walking the area too, and found a number of forest birds new to the trip. After lunch we drove to Laguna de Sunso wetland reserve which protects a beautiful area of swamps and savanna-style gallery forest (reminiscent to me of the Llanos in Venezuela) with Snail Kites, Apical Flycatcher Naturetrek December 17 1

3 and a good range of new species for the trip. A thunderstorm crashed about nearby, but we kept dry, and as darkness rapidly settled, we were on our way to Buga for overnight in a rather grand old hotel. Day 5 Monday 13th We left before dawn for Montezuma Mountain in Tatama National Park, changing to our four-wheel drive vehicles at Peublo Rico. In a small town north of Virginia, we learnt about the Colombian game Teha which we were to see again in a number of other places. A heavy pie-shaped iron weight is thrown at a wet clay target and the aim is to hit the white ceramic triangle filled with gunpowder which explodes when you get a bullseye. A fine roadside tree in fruit had a variety of colourful birds, including the only Turquoise Dacnis for the trip, and we made a point of stopping here again on the return journey on day six. As we headed up the mountain road to Montezuma, thick cloud enveloped us and the rain started and did not really stop until we left 48 hours later. However, despite the rain, the hummers and tanagers around the lodge were busy feeding and we had an enjoyable hot lunch watching them. Some preferred to spend the afternoon here where coffee and teas were constantly available, whilst others faced the rain in the forest. Our local guide knew the forest well, and Black Solitaire was quickly found, along with woodcreepers and other forest birds. At a bridge he put out a little rice and called to a pair of Olive Finches who popped out of the under-growth to give excellent views of this normally retiring bird. Day 6 Tuesday 14th We left in the dark for the road end at the summit, just after which is a military post. The rain eased down to a mist for a while and allowed us to have close views of Munchique Wren, a picnic breakfast of hot coffee sat in picnic chairs that our drivers had brought with them, new hummers, new tanagers, and some fabulous orchids. However, as the rain returned and made birding rather difficult, we headed by vehicle back to the lodge for a hot lunch, where some decided to stay, whilst others returned to the forest trail. Our guides worked hard, and we had misty views of Gold-ringed Tanager, a party of six Black Solitaires, and a few new birds for the trip, but unfortunately the rain probably reduced bird activity. However, with over six metres of rain per year in this area of Columbia, one is bound to meet it sometimes. Day 7 Wednesday 15th It was still raining at breakfast, so we left as soon as we had finished for Otun-Quimbaya in the foothills of the Central Range. First, we had to brave a few landslides on our road, which our drivers managed with spades and machetes, and we admired the rivers now as torrents. Approaching Otun, we stopped to have views from a quiet bridge of a pair of Torrent Ducks with White-capped Dipper and Torrent Tyrannulet and Black Phoebe busy feeding around the few still emergent rocks. At Otun we had lunch, and then headed into the nearby forest, where we quickly met half a dozen Red-ruffed Fruit-crows, and even heard the males booming. The endemic Cauca Guan showed up nicely, and we had the chance to compare them with the more widespread Sickle-winged Guan. As the sun dropped, the sky cleared, and we birded until too dark to see around the grounds, where a couple of Red Howler Monkeys were perched in a tree. 2 Naturetrek December 17

4 Day 8 Thursday 16th Our luck finally changed; the only rain was during our indoor lunch, and whilst it was misty in the mountains, our binoculars remained dry and the cameras could really come into play. We left in the dark, had a hot breakfast in a roadside café and headed into Los Nevados National Park. We went up until the visitor centre and toll-gates where there was no reason to go further, as a few Buffy Helmetcrests did their stuff on the Espletias. One of the group met a Tawny Antpitta so close to her on the track she was unable to focus on it. A flock of endemic Rufous-fronted Parakeets perched in low trees, Andean Teal, Stout-billed Cinclodes and Plumbeous Sierrafinches roamed the tiny mountain school, and the flora was stunning in this beautiful paramo environment. We had lunch at the hotel Temales de Ruiz an unexpected highlight I ll say no more. Wonderful! The afternoon was overcast and misty, but we descended the mountain on a quiet road, finding lots of birds and admiring the flora, particularly the ferns and many different fuchsias. Day 9 Friday 17th We left our very comfortable hotel in Manizales 30 minutes later than planned, held up further by busy traffic jams at 6.30am, and too late for the Bicoloured Antpitta feeding at our next destination, the Rio Blanco reserve a water catchment area with about 30% consisting of cleared farmland but with plenty of sub-tropical forest. The Chestnut-crowned, Slaty-crowned and Brown-banded Antpittas all appeared on cue for their worm breakfast, and we admired the hummingbirds. There was a cry of excitement and, hurrying up the road to the forest area, we had brief views of a Masked Tanager, one of the most difficult to find tanagers of the trip. The whole day was spent birding the roadsides. A Tayra was seen collecting fruits, and Sickle-winged Guan and Black-billed Mountain Toucans also paid a visit. At intervals there appeared to be no birds around and then the next, we were surrounded by a feeding mixed flock and trying to get on to all the various species before they moved on and the next arrived. It was classic tropical forest birding at its best and we had a great day. Day 10 Saturday 18th We headed out of Manizales towards Pereira and stopped at the Came Guadua lake and wetland, where we had breakfast and lunch, watching a great variety of wetland and woodland birds. The sun briefly put in an appearance and it was relaxing. We were still getting new species for the trip when we had to tear ourselves away for the airport for the flight to Bogota, where some were staying overnight to join the Santa Marta trip, and others were leaving Naturetrek for new destinations. Day 11 Monday 19th Arrival back in the UK. Another fabulous Naturetrek tour had ended, but great memories and some evocative photographs to remember it by. Total species for the trip species were heard only but mainly difficult birds to get other than by call.
