Unfortunately, the dugong suffers from human actions such as poaching, collision with boats and loss of its habitat, which consists of underwater sea grass meadows. It s closest relative, the tellers sea cow, became extinct in the th century due to overfishing, and the dugong itself has already disappeared in a number of countries! oday it is our responsibility, and foremost that of the nations and territories where the dugong can still be found, to save this charming and harmless animal from the same fate, should we keep on harming it this way. hat is why an action plan to save the species has been developed by the Pacific Regional Environment Program (PREP) in partnership with member nations. It is within this framework that has been declared Pacific Year of the Dugong. In New Caledonia our conservation activities have been ongoing now for quite some time. Protecting the dugong is a priority for environment management organizations, and in 0 numerous actions have been carried out in that line by the southern Province and its partners, including awareness-raising actions such as a drawings competition launched in schools. Hundreds of children expressed themselves on that theme, this calendar is their voice, let us listen to them!
