1 Training and capacity building in Dauria International Protected Area (DIPA) (2011) Oleg Goroshko (Daursky State Nature Biosphere Reserve) The grant was realized successfully and helped us to improve staffs of ornithological research and monitoring in the Dauria International Russian-Mongolian-Chinese Protected Area (DIPA) and improve international cooperation for research and monitoring of the waterbirds in the DIPA. Short introduction DIPA includes three state nature reserves: Chinese Dalai Lake, Mongolian Mongoldaguur and Russian Daursky (Fig. 1). The DIPA have great importance for conservation of birds in Asia. Dauria Region includes hundreds of lakes (Fig. 2). Dauria is internationally important stopover site for some millions of waterbirds in East Asian-Australasian and Central Asian-Indian flayways. More than 20 globally threatened species of birds (IUCN Red List) inhabit in the DIPA. Figure 1. Dauria International Russian-Mongolian-Chinese Protected Area (DIPA).

2 Research ornithological staff of DIPA is very limited and includes some young not enough skilled specialists. Staff of Daursky NR includes one high-skilled ornithologist Oleg Goroshko, one young medium-skilled specialist for monitoring of birds Svetlana Balzhimaeva and some low-skilled rangers interesting watching waterbirds and assisting in monitoring of waterbirds. Staff of Mongol-daguur NR includes two generalist biologists Delgermaa and Urtnasan and some rangers-assistants. Staff of Dalai Lake NR includes medium-skilled ornithologist Liu Songtao and some not enough skilled researchers-assistants. Oleg Goroshko is the most skilled specialist for study and monitoring of birds in DIPA. Important actions needed for improvement of study, monitoring and conservation migratory waterbirds in DIPA are: 1) training of existing staffs; 2) including of new young staffs. 3 Realization of the project Training of staff of DIPA The grant funds were used during field research time during July-November 2011 for arrangement of the field trainings and lectures for 4 young research staff of the DIPA, for 3 university students and for 4 rangers interesting watching waterbirds and helping in monitoring of waterbirds in DIPA. Trainee research staffs are: 1. Svetlana Balzhimayeva (Daursky NR); 2. Liu Songtao (Dalai Lake NR); 3. Bao Ler (Dalai Lake NR); 4. Urtnasan (Mongol-daguur NR). Trainee rangers are: 1. Sergey Motorin (Daursky NR), 2. Bator Rigzinov (Daursky NR), 3. Sergey Sharkov (Daursky NR), 4. Chimid Tseren (Mongol-daguur NR). Trainee students of the Transbaikal University (Russia) are: 1. Artiom Komarov, 2. Maxim Komarov, 3. Yury Kuklin. Senior trainer is Oleg Goroshko (Ph.D., ornithologist, deputy-director for research work in Daursky NR); trainer-assistant is Svetlana Balzhimayeva. We organized 3 field trainings for research staffs: 1. In Dalai Lake NR (China) during July. Participants: Svetlana Balzhimayeva, Liu Songtao, Bao Ler, Urtnasan, Sergey Motorin, Oleg Goroshko. 2. In Mongol-daguur NR (Mongolia) during August. Participants: Svetlana Balzhimayeva, Urtnasan, Bator Rigzinov, Oleg Goroshko. 3. In Daursky NR (Russia) during 5-13 September. Participants: Svetlana Balzhimayeva, Sergey Motorin, Bator Rigzinov, Sergey Sharkov, Oleg Goroshko.

These trainings were organized during southward migration of waterbirds and were located on the 3 internationally important stopover sites of the waterbirds: 1) on the big Dalai Lake and Ulan-Nur

In Russia and China we also observed many small lakes and counted waterbirds there. Trainer was Oleg Goroshko. Training objectives: 1) identification of species of waterbirds; 2) methods of study and count of waterbirds; 3) observation of colour ringed and leg-flagged waterbirds; 4) study and description of condition of habitats (wetlands). For the all low-skilled staff, the trainings were very useful for increasing knowledge: 1) for identification of waterbirds; 2) methods of counting of birds; 3) watching of colour ringed and leg-flagged waterbirds; main part of people newer recorded leg-flagged shorebirds before; during training we observed 12 Red-necked Stints with orange and yellow plastic flags marked in Australia (Fig 3); 4) study and description of wetlands. For mediumskilled Svetlana Balzhimaeva, the training was very useful for study methods of count of birds: 1) count of numerous birds on the gathering sites with high density of birds; 2) count and estimation of number of birds on big lakes; 3) count of flying migratory birds; 4) choice and description of the monitoring sites for many-years duration monitoring of waterbirds. Figure 3. Red-necked Stint with orange plastic flag Important feature of our project was combination of training with real scientific study and monitoring of migratory waterbirds. In 2010, staff of Daursky NR started to work for establishment of the Transboundary Ecological Monitoring Network (TEMN) for long term monitoring of populations of migratory waterbirds and wetlands. During 2010 we started this work in Russia; we described there 88 long-term monitoring sites and made censuses of waterbirds there. In 2011, during our annual meeting of the three-lateral Working Group of DIPA, we planned a joint work for establishing of TEMN in Mongolia and China during 2011

5 (the Minutes of the meeting is enclosed). The joint training of the international team in 2011 combined with censuses on TEMN were very successful because censuses helped to trainings, trainings helped to censuses and they both helped to improvement of international cooperation in DIPA. During this work: 1) staffs were trained for identify of birds and methods of counting during real research census work; 2) during such joint work we formed good international DIPA research team for future long term study and monitoring of waterbirds in DIPA; 3) staffs studied methods of research and monitoring of waterbirds and wetlands; 4) the team selected and confirmed joint integrated methods for international long term monitoring. 5) the team described 171 new monitoring sites and made monitoring censuses of waterbirds there.) At present time the TEMN includes 168 waterbird monitoring sites in Russia, 70 sites in Mongolia, and 51 sites in China (Fig. 4). Main tasks of the long-term TEMN are: 1) monitoring of number and condition of populations of migratory waterbirds; 2) study of condition and dynamic of habitats (wetlands); 3) study of influence of the global climate change and human impact to waterbirds and wetlands; 4) international conservation of biodiversity. The TEMN covers big area of Dauria Region (much bigger than DIPA). Now, the TEMN is a base for long term international monitoring in Global Transboundary Steppe Dauria Ecoregion. Therefore, in 2009, Daursky started a special program of education to train students of Transbaikal University for identification and census of waterbirds.

DIPA and Daursky NR need much more specialists for study and monitoring of birds, but it is very difficult to get new specialist in Siberia. Therefore, in 2009, Daursky started a special program of education to train students of Transbaikal University for identification and census of waterbirds. We plan to educate new enough skilled specialists for staffs of the DIPA. Since 2009, we have educated and trained Artiom Komarov. In 2011, we educated and trained Artiom and two new young students more. Artiom was a leader of this student group, he helped us to train young students. The training of students in 2011 was much more intensive, manifold and long that in previous 2009 and It had very good result; now Artiom can identify all common species of waterbirds and know main methods of counting of birds. Since end of 2011 he is accepted for employment with part-time work in Daursky NR as staff for monitoring and research of waterbirds. Artiom will also continue his study in the University up to Including of the Artiom to staff of the Daursky NR helps much for activity of DIPA for study and monitoring of migratory waterbirds. In 2011, we organized 3 field trainings for all 3 students of the Transbaikal University and one special training for Artiom Komarov: 1. During 2-12 August (for all 3 students);

7 2. During September (for all 3 students); 3. From 27 September to 8 October (for all 3 students); 4. During October (special training for Artiom Komarov). These trainings were organized during southward migration of waterbirds and were located on the internationally important stopover site of the waterbirds on the Torey Lakes in Daursky NR. Main trainer was Oleg Goroshko, assistant trainer was Svetlana Balzhimayeva. Training objectives were: 1) identification of species of waterbirds; 2) methods of count of waterbirds; 3) observation of colour ringed and leg-flagged waterbirds; 4) methods of banding of birds. During 2-12 August and during September, trainers taught and trained the students during joint with them field monitoring censuses. Such training censuses were conducted twice per day: in morning and evening. From 13 August to 14 September, students continued monitoring twice per day without trainers. Using of grant funds The funds were used for arrangement of the field trainings and lectures and for equipment: 1. Travel cost for field training of staff of DIPA and students 1160 $ US. 2. Living expenses and other accommodation expenses during field training 930 $ US. 3. Lecturer and trainers costs (Oleg and Svetlana) 300 $ US. 4. Equipments: 4.1. Small photo-camera Nikon Coolpix P500 with big zoom (36x) for taking of images of birds 450 $ US. This camera is used by Svetlana Balzhimaeva, Artiom Komarov and students during their independent counts (without Oleg Goroshko) for taking of images of birds difficult for identification. Than, this images are analyzed together with Oleg for identification of species and training. The photo-camera will be used also for taking of images of banded and leg-flagged waterbirds Eight Field guides to the waterbirds of Russia, Е.Е. Siroechkovsky Ed., 2011, 223 pages $ US. It is a good quality Field guides which are very important for training and future monitoring in DIPA. IN TOTAL 3,000 $ US.

8 We planned to use 1,100 $ US for travel cost (airplane tickets) for education and training of Svetlana Balzhimaeva in National Banding Center in Moscow, but we used this money for more training of Svetlana and other staff in DIPA it is more important. We also did not use money for buy small field equipments for arrangement of training in Mongolia in tent camp (sleeping bags, polypropylene tourist mattresses and other). This and other equipment (computer and multimedia projector for lectures, binoculars, telescopes, tents and other) were rent in Daursky NR free of charge. We used this money for buy field guides.
