3 The Ramsar Convention The Ramsar Convention is an international agreement to protect wetlands around the world. It was signed in 1971 in Ramsar, Iran, and provides protection to 192 million hectares of wetland habitat to this day. Originally, the convention was signed to protect waterbird habitats, but has been broadened to include the protection and wise use of all wetland biodiversity.
