Ecological significance of the Gwydir River floodplain Inland terminal delta wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention (832 ha listed in 1990) Supports an abundance of waterbirds (75 species, 50 breeding), 15 migratory species (JAMBA, CAMBA, ROKAMBA) Important colonially-nesting waterbird site - Key Biodiversity Area (KBA) in danger BirdLife Australia 2017 Diverse assemblage of floodplain wetland communities including critically endangered Marsh Club-rush Joanna Taylor /OEH

Integration of ecological criteria with hydraulic modelling Hydraulically defined floodway network before the application of the ecological criteria adjacent to Gwydir wetlands Ramsar sites and Gwydir Wetlands State Conservation Areas

Maintaining flood connectivity for important wetlands Hydraulically defined floodway network expanded to protect the passage of floodwater to semi-permanent wetlands to support annual near annual surface water requirements Floodway network modified to provide connectivity to flood dependent shrubland wetlands for periodic inundation

Maintaining flood connectivity for waterbird habitat Straw-necked Ibis, Threskiornis spinicollis in Lignum rookery, Upper Gingham Wetlands Floodplain management plan zones designed to protect the passage of floodwaters to known waterbird habitat breeding sites Waterbird breeding habitat Daryl J Albertson/OEH listed in statutory plans

Benefits and broader impacts Protection of flood connectivity for health of flood-dependent ecosystems: greater certainty for future e-water deliveries rules for assessing future flood-work applications require protection of flood connectivity to ecological and cultural assets and to facilitate fish passage. Floodway networks inform Long Term Water Plans being developed as part of the implementation of the Murray-Darling Basin Plan Process makes balanced plans for all floodplain users, including the environment Greater understanding of flood behaviour across the extent of major flooding achieved through extensive LiDAR capture and computer advancements to run hydraulic models.
