Poland 17th - 24th May 2014 Tour Report ORIOLE BIRDING

TOUR LEADERS Neil Donaghy & Paul Roberts PARTICIPANTS Ashley Field Gareth Jenkins Rob Lewis Jim Morgan Alan Rosney Mike Wheeler Saturday 17th May. Early rain gradually giving way to bright spells. Our arrival in Warsaw saw heavy rain falling, quite a contrast to the clear conditions we left behind in the UK. Luckily, after collecting the transport and heading east out of the city - noting typical Polish city birds such as Hooded Crow, Swift and Starling - conditions gradually improved and we soon caught sight of our first White Storks feeding in the extensive fields. A roadside stop for lunch near Wyszkow produced several Common Redstarts, Great Spotted Woodpecker, European Robin, Blackcap and a Willow Tit at a nest hole. Once back on the road we were privileged to spot a European Honey-buzzard in full wing-clapping display. Further species noted while in transit included Golden Oriole, Common Buzzard, Northern Lapwing, Barn Swallow, Black Redstart, Fieldfare, Common Tern and Tree Sparrow. Our next planned stop was to be at a riverside location in the Bug Valley, but not before an impromptu halt in a lay-by to look at a harrier over an adjacent field. This transpired to be a Marsh, but even better were two Montagu's that floated into view, followed by an Ortolan Bunting obligingly perched close by, with a Common Kestrel, several Blue-headed Wagtails and numerous Sky Larks also noted. The Bug Valley proved productive, with European Bee-eater [two or three, and unexpected here], Thrush Nightingale, River Warbler, Barred Warbler [heard], Common Whitethroat, Icterine Warbler, Marsh Warbler, Great Reed Warbler, Red-backed Shrike, Common Cuckoo, Ortolan Bunting and Yellowhammer. Not bad assortment for a fairly brief roadside stop at a rather anonymous looking location. As we neared our final destination the journey was enlivened in Hajnowka by a thunderstorm accompanied by torrential hail and rain causing a flash flood in the town streets. However, this was thankfully fairly shortly lived and we pressed on for our home for the next few days - the lovely Dwor Wejmutka in Bialowieza. After freshening up we had time to relax in the vicinity of the hotel, where singing Eurasian Wryneck, Hawfinch, Icterine Warbler, Spotted Flycatcher, displaying Common Snipe, Song Thrush, Common Chiffchaff and Lesser Whitethroat added to the growing list. A River Warbler was reeling unseen in the hotel grounds, with Common Rosefinch and Thrush Nightingale also heard only before dinner was served. What an enjoyable first day and a great introduction to the avian riches of north-east Poland. Sunday 18th May Sunny and warm. A pre-breakfast excursion to the Narewka at the east end of the village and also around the hotel brought a fly over Great Grey Shrike, a calling Grey-headed Woodpecker, Dunnock, Common Raven, Willow Tit, Eurasian Hoopoe, and good numbers of the 'usual suspects' like River Warblers and Thrush Nightingales, among others. Our first few hours of the day after breakfasting were spent walking through Bialowieza village and around the Palace Park. Even before leaving the grounds of the hotel we were treated to fantastic views of a European Honey-buzzard that floated overhead. Birds came thick and fast along the side of the meadow at the west end of the village.

A couple of Lesser Spotted Eagles allowed study of their salient identification features and a bright male Common Rosefinch gave exceptional views. Great Grey Shrike, Garden Warbler, Golden Oriole soon followed. A Marsh Tit was bringing food to a nest at the border with the Palace Park, while Red-backed Shrike, Eurasian Wryneck, Tree Pipit and Whinchat were also logged. Our first Black Stork made an appearance over the forest to the north, while European Serin and Black Redstart sang close by. On entering the Palace Park we soon found a White-backed Woodpecker, although the views were rather brief. A little further on we were treated to our first encounters with Collared Flycatchers, such smart little birds, and quite common in and around the village. Middle Spotted Woodpecker, Common Nuthatch, Common Redstart and European Serin were also present in the park. On leaving the park we headed for the nearby new tower hide by the Narewka and were able to enjoy a very showy Savi's Warbler, with a Great Reed Warbler proving less co-operative. Reed Bunting and Grey Heron were also here, with a Beaver's lodge just below the hide. Shortly after an adult Whitetailed Eagle soared over Palace Park Lake. All par for the course in Bialowieza! Dinner was to be taken early today, as the evening was to be spent on excursions to sites for European Roller and Great Snipe, accompanied by local guide Mateusz Szymura. Major road works between Hajnowka and Kleszczele, near where we were to search for European Roller, meant taking diversions along forest tracks abutting the Belarus border, with a Turtle Dove noted in both countries! Alas no Rollers were found at Rogacze - their last known site in the Bialowieza locale - but compensations came in the form of Northern Wheatears, Great Grey Shrike, Stock Doves, a pair of Turtle Doves, Blue-headed Wagtails and a colony of Fieldfares. The route back gave us another chance to take in the beautiful countryside and authentic villages with their ubiquitous White Stork nests, seemingly a relict from an earlier age and so typical of this part of Poland. Birds added here included a pair of Common Bullfinches, a Mistle Thrush and a purring Turtle Dove, our sixth turtur of the evening. Despite the road diversions we made it to the huge marsh at Narew in good time to install ourselves in situ for the Great Snipe lek. Typically they didn't really get properly going until dusk was imminent, but we were all able to eventually gain decent views of the jumping and calling males - with white outer tail marking obvious - at this traditional site. Mateusz thought that around eight males were at the lek on this occasion. Corncrakes were calling tantalisingly close by, a Grasshopper Warbler reeled and Common Cranes were bugling distantly - all very atmospheric. Further records before darkness fell included a roding Eurasian Woodcock, Northern Lapwing, Common Redshank, Willow Warbler and Wood Warbler. Monday 19th May Mainly sunny and warm, clouding over in the evening, with a few spots of rain. After breakfast we met up with our hugely knowledgeable local guide Arek Szymura [father of Mateusz], who was to accompany us into the Strict Reserve. This is the protected area of the Bialowieza National Park, which has remained almost unchanged for thousands of years. Just outside the entrance to the primeval forest we enjoyed great views of a family party of White-backed Woodpeckers, the adults feeding two young. A Corncrake called unseen nearby, with Red-backed Shrike, Eurasian Wryneck and Lesser Spotted Eagle rather more obliging. Once inside Arek supplied a wealth of information on the ecology of the forest [for example, that the forest birds are present in high diversity, but low density] while we picked up typical species such as Hawfinch, European Robin, Goldcrest, Song Thrush, Blackbird, Common Nuthatch and Great Tit. Eventually we arrived at a nest hole where Middle Spotted Woodpeckers were delivering food to their young. Nearby both Collared and Red-breasted Flycatchers showed well, although no fully mature red-breasted 'RBFlys' were found. Shortly after we were led to a Black Woodpecker nest hole and after ten minutes an adult flew in, giving a fantastic opportunity to study this oversized 'pecker. A Tawny Owl called distantly and a Common Treecreeper was also heard. Following lunch we headed into the forest at Miejsce Mosy, south-west of the village, parking in a clearing by the old railway line. We stopped to admire a Wood Warbler, before walking roughly south along the Sinicka Droga.

We were unable to locate any Three-toed Woodpeckers reported to be present, but did find a Crested Tit, Coal Tit and a family of Siskins. The area near the railway was productive for butterflies, with Chequered and Northern Chequered Skippers, Camberwell Beauty, Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary and Map recorded. Returning to the hotel for refreshments, we then opted to walk from there along the adjacent disused railway track that runs parallel to the Narewka. We were soon admiring a song-flighting Barred Warbler along with Common Rosefinch, Eurasian Wryneck, Thrush Nightingale, Common Whitethroat, Common Snipe and calling Corncrake. There was just time before dinner to visit another potential Threetoed Woodpecker location, at Wilczy Tryb, just north of Teremiski. Our target was again elusive, but a Black Stork and a Common Raven overhead were some recompense, before taking dinner at the hotel. After eating an evening excursion to look for Eurasian Pygmy Owl was scheduled. After picking our Arek up near the church he showed us a Grey-headed Woodpecker at a nest hole in the north of the village, before we headed west out of the village along forest roads. There was no activity at the first location - too early in the evening according to Arek - and we tried at a second location where a pair of Eurasian Pygmy Owls soon appeared, the male seen and the female heard only. Returning to the first location a Eurasian Pygmy Owl arrived on cue and we were able to get prolonged views of the tiny predator in the beam of Arek's powerful lamp. A roding Eurasian Woodcock flew through calling before darkness fell. A Red Deer in the vehicle headlights on our return to the hotel completed another great day. Tuesday 20th May Largely overcast, a few spots of rain, warm and humid, heavy overnight rain. Following breakfast - and after earlier productive forays in the vicinity of the hotel by some of the group - we headed to a bridge between the hamlets of Teremiski and Budy, which crosses a stream that traverses an impressive alder carr wood. A Green Sandpiper called unseen, but soon flew up into a nearby tree - always an odd sight for those of us only used to seeing nonbreeders. Both Collared and Spotted Flycatchers flitted about and a Common Raven 'cronked' overhead. Before long several woodpeckers revealed themselves, namely Black, White-backed and Middle Spotted. Driving on through Budy we pulled in at the west end of the village and walked down the road [no cars allowed] that leads north - seeing a Black Woodpecker on the way - as far as the bridge over the Lutownia. The stream at this location is accompanied by a belt of sedge marsh and alder carr. Here we were blessed with fantastic unhindered views of several courting Golden Orioles in a dead tree, while a pair of Redbacked Shrikes was building a nest close by. Our only Grey Wagtail of the trip was feeding on the roadside, harassed by a territorial White Wagtail. The walk back to the vehicle produced a singing Red-breasted Flycatcher near the parking place, albeit another non-redbreasted male. After a drink stop at the hotel we convened at the cafe by the Palace Park, where one of the group was fortunate to see a Northern Goshawk over. We opted to investigate Topilo Lake in the south-west of the forest, reached via Hajnowka. Just before Topilo village we pulled in at the bridge over the lake. We soon picked up two Green Sandpipers flying over the trees, with three Long-tailed Tits [race europaeus] moving though the adjacent scrub. Scanning down the lake a Common Goldeneye was revealed, although little else from this position except good numbers of dragonflies. Another vantage point can be found where the railway crosses the lake. Here a pair of Whooper Swans was a nice addition, although they took off and disappeared into the distance almost as soon as we arrived. More Common Goldeneyes were present at this part of the lake, including a brood of seven ducklings. We finished with a Grey-headed Woodpecker flying over the lake, before making our way back to Bialowieza. At the south-west edge of the village is an area of forest named on the map as Gierkowka, where we had heard that a fully adult singing Red-breasted Flycatcher was present. On entering the forest our attention was immediately drawn to an animal moving through the canopy that soon revealed itself to be a Pine Marten. We were able to enjoy wonderful views - accompanied by a cacophony of bird alarm calls - as it moved though the trees with great agility, even stopping to look at us at one point.

Eventually it ran down to the forest floor and vanished. This was a first for all present and we all remarked on its size [larger than imagined] and amazing litheness - what a privilege! The 'RBFly' had been temporarily forgotten, but gathering our wits we walked roughly 800 metres further along the forest track where we soon located a very showy full adult Redbreasted Flycatcher, red breast and all. Dinner was taken a little earlier than usual so that we could make an optimistic search for mammals before dark. After a short walk along the railway line for Corncrake [heard, not seen] we mounted the tower hide that overlooks the Beaver's lodge on the Narewka in the village. A twenty minute watch proved fruitless, so a decision was made to scan for Bison in the meadows north of the village. On arriving at 20:30 we were amazed to witness three Bison bulls moving slowly through the meadow, just a couple of hundred metres away. The bulls stopped to eye us up briefly once, before feeding and continuing on their way. Simply awesome! Wednesday 21st May Cloudy start, becoming sunny and warm. Today we were to transfer to Biebrza, via stops at Kosy Most and Siemenowka Reservoir. Saying goodbye to our hosts we headed roughly north along forest roads to the Kosy Most, an area of mixed forest where Hazel Grouse are known to be present. Sadly we dipped the elusive grouse but did record a fly over Northern Goshawk, Crested Tit and Middle Spotted Woodpecker. As the sun broke through plenty of butterflies emerged in the forest clearing including Pearl-bordered Fritillary and Sooty Copper. Had we more time a longer visit to this area would have doubtless turned up more, but with the marshes beckoning we pressed on northwards, seeing a Pine Marten run across the road as we left Kosy Most to rejoin the main forest road. A relatively short distance to the north is Siemenowka Reservoir. This is a large, shallow reservoir with, in the east, a broad strip of marshland. Towards the north and south, traditional meadows and fields dominate the landscape. At Siemenowka village we mistakenly took the first right turn instead of the second, which proved fortuitous as we soon ended up in an open sandy pine forest where we were able to enjoy a close up singing Wood Lark, one or two Eurasian Hoopoes and several Willow Warblers, with another Wood Lark added as we reoriented back to the village. Once at the reservoir a couple of convenient vantage points over the south-east corner of the reservoir brought a host of sightings in rapid succession: numerous Great White Egrets, Grey Herons, Great Cormorants, a White-tailed Eagle harassed by two Marsh Harriers, Great Crested Grebe, Common Coot, a few Gadwalls among the commoner Mallards, Black-headed Gulls, a brief Caspian Gull, Northern Lapwings - the list goes on. Terns present here were mostly Whiskered, with smaller numbers of Black, and just a couple each of White-winged Black and Common. A Penduline Tit called nearby and standard fare [!] such as Common Cuckoo, Whinchat, Red-backed Shrike, Common Rosefinch and Corncrake were by the parking spot. A European Honey-buzzard flew directly overhead before we decided move on to have a look the north-west corner, including the adjacent Bachury Fish Ponds, where we would stop for lunch. The ponds themselves held Mute Swans, Greylag Geese, Common Pochard, Tufted Ducks and decent numbers of Black-headed Gulls and Common Terns. A Penduline Tit was busily nest building and two Great Bitterns boomed from the adjacent marshy inlet that forms the most northern part of the reservoir. Most of the terns here were Black, in contrast to the areas watched earlier. The rest of the journey to Biebrza, via Bialystok, was mostly uneventful, although a Little Ringed Plover by a small flood in an arable field was a nice addition. Arriving at our beautifully situated hotel on the Carska Droga [Csar's Road] mid afternoon, we took an hour to move into our rooms and freshen up, before heading to the famous boardwalk at Dluga Luka, in a southerly direction down the Carska Droga. This is the most convenient location in Biebrza to see the globally threatened Aquatic Warbler and, with a little patience; we were all able to connect with this flagship species, probably three birds in total.

Further sightings while on the boardwalk included a Eurasian Hobby eating a dragonfly on the wing, a male Montagu's Harrier, several Marsh Harriers, Common Cranes, Common Snipe, Black-tailed Godwits, Common Redshanks, Meadow Pipit, Savi's Warbler, Reed Buntings and Sedge Warblers. On our return to the hotel for dinner we made a brief stop at the nearby tower hide, hoping to see an Elk. None were showing, but it did give us the opportunity to appreciate the sheer scale of the marsh stretching out to the west - truly stunning. Before we left the hide a Eurasian Woodcock flew past and Odonata included Ruby Whiteface [aka Northern White-faced Darter]. Another rewarding day in this special corner of Europe. Thursday 22nd May Very warm and sunny, becoming breezy. Sightings in and around the hotel before heading off for the day included Ortolan Bunting, two Wood Larks, Black Redstart, Spotted Flycatcher, Icterine Warbler and Tree Sparrows. Heading north along the Carska Droga, our first port of call was to the National Park offices to collect permits, before driving the short distance to the tower hide and boardwalk at Osowiec. The area near the tower hide is often good for Bluethroat, but none were detected, possibly as a result of the brisk wind that had developed? However, as ever in north-east Poland, other birds filled the gap, such as a close Black Stork, three Garganey, Greylag Geese, Common Cuckoo, Penduline Tit and Savi's Warbler. From our elevated position we could see a group of terns over the other side of the road, where another tower hide is situated. From there we had better views of the terns, mainly White-winged Black [100+], plus two brief Ruff, Garganey, Great White Egrets, numerous White Storks, a couple of White-tailed Eagles and several Common Cranes. From here we headed to Wolka, north of Goniadz, an area of traditional farming, interspersed with marshes and woods. We didn't connect with any of the Spotted Eagles known to occur in the area, but did see White-tailed Eagle, Blueheaded Wagtail and Common Cranes, before heading for Mscicny on the west bank, near where we would take lunch. The area of Bialy Grad is a location of a big sedge marsh restoration project, where a rough track leads eventually to a tower hide. The meadows were home to Black-tailed Godwit, Common Snipe, Northern Lapwing and Common Redshank. Our first Elk was noted on the opposite side of the marsh, favouring the edge of the reeds, as is often the case. We negotiated several ditches in the vehicle before giving up where the track disappeared under water. However, several of the group were not deterred and removed boots and socks to cross the barrier in order to make it as far as the tower. These intrepid souls were to enjoy point blank views of terns, thirteen Garganey, a Eurasian Sparrowhawk and a Black Stork at the end of the trail. A Eurasian Hoopoe was also noted. Deciding it was high time for refreshments we relocated to the Dwor Bartla in Goniadz, where the rear of the hotel has a jetty that protrudes into the marsh, giving a fantastic vista over the area. Here marsh terns zipped past at eye level, a pair of Montagu's Harriers consorted and several Marsh Harriers hunted. What a great place to relax and enjoy the ambience of the marsh for an hour or so. With dinner time imminent, we briefly called in at a trail at Stojka - which appeared to have suitability for Nutcracker - before arriving back at the hotel, where a pair of Montagu s Harriers was noted at the rear of the garden. Friday 23rd May Very warm and sunny. Sightings from the vicinity of the hotel 'early doors' included Elk, Great Grey Shrike, Wood Lark, Ortolan Bunting and Black Stork. Our main destination of the morning was to be Kynzyn Fish Ponds, just east of the marshes. As we were unable to gain entry until 10am we opted to call in on route to Zajki, at the south end of the marshes. From the tower hide we were fortunate to have a White-tailed Eagle and two Elk [mother and calf] in the same 'scope view, plus small groups of terns well distributed.

We then took the highly scenic minor road east, which runs parallel with the Narew, where we chanced upon the charming sight of a family of Common Cranes [pair plus two young] close to the vehicle. The fish ponds are invariably productive, and today was no exception. The first pool held two Whooper Swans, two Ruff, several Little Grebes, plus nesting Common Terns and Black-headed Gulls. A Common Raven dropped in and stole a gull egg, while some Great Reed Warblers were the showiest of the trip so far. Our first Reed Warblers were also logged here. Further along a drained pond held a smart Temminck s Stint, Wood Sandpiper, two Little Ringed Plovers and a Common Redshank, while a Common Greenshank flew over calling. Good numbers of Northern Lapwings were scattered about, with two Stock Doves, a Eurasian Hoopoe and a Linnet also noted. Six Black Terns dropped in briefly and a further nine Whoopers were present. A Large Copper butterfly was found. White-tailed Eagles were seen soaring to the north towards Jezioro Zygmunta Augusta, a reservoir by which the species nests. Our lunch stop was made just outside Tykocin, where another tower hide overlooks the Neresl and its adjacent marshes. Here we enjoyed the wonderful sight of three Otters playing in a river channel at close quarters. A short distance south of Tykocin is a complex of sand quarries, now active and supplying material to the adjacent road works. Luckily, this doesn't appear to have put off the colony of European Bee-eaters that nest here, with around seven of these multicoloured marvels observed prospecting nest holes. The scrub in the quarry was alive with passerines, most obviously Thrush Nightingales. A Tawny Pipit perched up on a wire above a field, before dropping back into the arable crop. While waiting for the pipit to reappear, Great Grey Shrike, Northern Wheatear, Whinchat and Yellowhammer were also seen on the same wires. A Common Quail called from a couple of fields over, where several Blue-headed Wagtails were also present. The remainder of our day in the field was to be spent making our way up the west bank of the Biebrza. Turning right just before Wizna, we were soon at Burzyn, where a tower on glacial moraine, at one of the highest points locally, offers a spectacular panorama over the Biebrza valley - greatly aided by having the afternoon sun behind us. Whilst admiring the scene a White-tailed Eagle put up a large flock of ducks, mainly Mallard, but also at least six Garganey, several Northern Shovelers and some Gadwall. Three Elks, Marsh Harriers, Great White Egrets, terns and the like, were also noted. Continuing north we arrived at Brzostowo, at a place on the Biebrza where cattle cross, affording close views of the river and marshes. Here the farmer has constructed several small watchtowers, which can be accessed for a few Zlotys. Three breeding-plumaged Ruddy Turnstones made an incongruous sight and a Dunlin dropped in, while nearby some noisy Black-tailed Godwits displayed nearby. Five species of tern were recorded here, including at least five Little Terns. With time at a premium we dragged ourselves away and continued north to Osowiec, for another attempt at Bluethroat. Our luck was in and one was located, although it always remained rather skulking. This proved to be our last new species of the trip and we headed back to the hotel for our final dinner of what had been a fantastic trip. Saturday 23rd May Our flight home left in the early afternoon, so we drove straight to Warsaw after breakfast. The drive was uneventful and we arrived in good time at the airport for our onward journeys home.
