1 North France and The Netherlands 16 th -19 th November 2016 Introduction This report covers a 4 day, part-birding and part-holiday trip to the Netherlands, passing through northern France and Belgium on the way. With 3 full days available, approximately half the time was spent birding, and the other half taking in various cities and sites. The idea came about after reading Josh Jones report from March 2015, and with my girlfriend never having visited France or Belgium a plan was hatched to get away for a few days. My initial target species were the possible lifers, primarily category C Dutch and French species (Black Swan, Bar-headed Goose, Reeve s Pheasant and Alexandrine Parakeet) as well as Lesser White-fronted Goose. In the days leading up to the trip it emerged a wintering Bufflehead had returned to its favoured site for a 13 th year running and, accepted as wild by the Dutch, it became an addition to the target list. Waarneming.nl was essential to finding most species most of the wildfowl don t have regular sites, so previous locations can be useless, as it proved for me. The weather was largely overcast, with some showers, including appalling ones on the second and last evening. The days were short sunlight only from about 08:15-16:30, and given the time of year I was very pleased to not only secure all of my targets, but also bag a couple of vagrant birds and hit the 100 species mark. For a more in depth review of each day, including photos and detailed species location, please visit my blog godalmingareabirds.blogspot.com. Accommodation and transport The trip was done by car. Petrol costs are much cheaper on the continent, and a Wednesday evening outbound journey on the Eurotunnel from Folkestone to Calais, with a late Saturday night return, was less than 100. All the birding sites were easily accessible by car. The roads in the Netherlands in particular are very good, and in the countryside access is easy. The trip was very much a budget one, and thus we used Air BnB for our Thursday and Friday night accommodation (in Antwerp and Dordrecht respectively) which was typically wonderful both cost effective and homely. This also allowed us to cook. Indeed, we brought all our food for the trip with us from England. For the Wednesday night we used Booking.com, which found Le Trianon hotel in Hesdin. It was basic, but for 40 very much did the job. Literature I used no books for the trip, but I cannot stress the usefulness and help (in some cases essential) Waarneming.nl was for finding some of my targets. This database is used by many Dutch birders to record birds, from common species to rarities, and each sighting comes with a GPS reference. Thus, a quick search and punching of a GPS into the sat-nav can take you to a bird with ease. Itinerary

After searching Waarneming before my trip, it seemed a family party was present in the Nationaal Park De Biesboch, south of Dordrecht, with a couple of reports in the week before I arrived. However, an extensive drive through this beautiful network of floods and river marsh on the 18 th failed to locate any. Without a backup plan, and failing to locate any whilst birding elsewhere, I was very fortunate to learn of a bird reported back in the Nationaal Park De Biesboch on the morning of the last day. We arrived there mid-afternoon, with the Waarneming GPS reference of , taking us to the exact flood where 1 adult was feeding with 62 Mute Swans. Lesser White-fronted Goose the main target of the trip, Lesser White-fronts took some hard graft in the field before pinning down. A couple of hours of thorough searching, from dawn at Oudeland Van Strijen on the 18 th, failed to pick any out. However, upon returning mid-afternoon, I was eventually able to find 5 at roughly , 4.522, on the west side of the Vlaamseweg track. A scope is absolutely essential for this site the uneven polder land is deceptive, and birds can vanish. Furthermore, there are 10 s of 1000 s of Geese here, so careful scanning is required to make sure you have Lesser s. Also, bring layers it s exposed, and any wind leaves you bitterly cold! Bar-headed Goose Similarly to Black Swan, I had few sites, and failed with my first couple of attempts. Josh Jones listed the River Lek at Culemborg as good for them, but I had none there, and also failed on a recently reported individual south of Strijen. However, Waarneming came good again, with a report of 12 in Kade, Zevenhoven coming in late on the 18 th. Thankfully this was en route to Amsterdam, so we were able to stop off on the way there on the 19th. We pulled up at the GPS reference , and 8 birds were feeding with 2 Mute Swans at a farm. Later in the day, we had 3 at Mijdrecht from the car.
5 Bufflehead the returning drake, back for its 13 th winter on Gaatkens Plas, Koedood, in Barendrecht, was the easiest bird. Reported daily, it took less than 5 minutes to pick him out on the southern side of the lake on the 18 th, where he regularly dived and displayed to female Tufted Ducks. Reeve s Pheasant after a bit of a wait, eventually no less than 14 of these spectacular Pheasants were seen in Foret d Hesdin, northern France, in the early morning of the 17 th. The track on the west side of the forest is the best access point, and after parking by the gate and walking along it, before deviating into the woods, we had no Pheasant species at all. However, further up, about half-way between the gate and the crossroads, I had my first female next to the track. A little further on in a young plantation 4 female-types and 2 males, all very wary, were seen, before 2 more (a male and female) were seen on the track. At the crossroads, 5 males showed very well, down to a few feet from the car. Alexandrine Parakeet this species is present in at least 3 parks in Amsterdam. I eventually pinned down about 5 in Vondelpark on the 19 th, after no joy in Oosterpark before. Many Ring-necked Parakeets are present, but the Alexandrine s differing call, size and pink wing patch make them easy to pick out. Dips None, though Black Swan had me worried! Bonus birds Red-breasted Goose - with up to 3 reported in the vast Oudeland van Strijen flocks this winter, I was determined to see one, and got lucky when a bird was reported on Waarneming at around midday on the 18 th. It still took some finding, and after only a few minutes view in the scope it disappeared into a dyke and was not seen again. It wasn t far from the Lesser White-fronts. American Wigeon very much the bonus bird of the trip, a drake was reported at Snel en Polanen, near Utrecht, on the 19 th. Remarkably, when news came through we were heading back from Amsterdam and just 19 minutes from the site, so decided to stop by. I was rewarded with crippling views, with the bird sleeping a couple of hundred feet from the sure. Summary For anyone who considers themselves a Western Palearctic lister, the Netherlands (and Foret d Hesdin) are necessary for certain category C species, and the ease of access in the country, combined with the wonderful Waarneming website, makes finding the birds relatively easy and enjoyable. To counter this listing style, the Netherlands also offers captivating landscapes and habitats, on which proper birding can take place. Birds like Hen Harriers, Great White Egrets, and 10 s of 1000 s of wildfowl (no less than 10 Geese species all trip) are seemingly everywhere. My trip in particular was a 100% birding success, and done on a very small budget too. Despite seeing all my Dutch targets, I would certainly visit the country again for a session in Oudeland van Strijen, itself alone worthy of enticing a British birder over.
