POLAND SPRING 26 TH MAY -2 ND JUNE 2018 TOUR REPORT ORIOLE BIRDING

TOUR LEADER Neil Donaghy PARTICIPANTS Alice Liddle Alex Liddle Tessie Waring 26 TH MAY 2018 Following huge thunderstorms in the area throughout the morning, the flight was only around an hour late and once immigration formalities had been completed, we were on our way east in the early afternoon and although the rain was biblical at times, it cleared by the time we reached Wyszkow. As usual, the species seen en route consisted of Common Starlings, Fieldfares, Western Jackdaws, Common Swifts, Barn Swallows, White Wagtails, and the odd Common Buzzard and Hooded Crow, as well as a single Common Kestrel, and after we passed through Bransk, we began to see White Storks on a regular basis both in the meadows and on the nests. We arrived in Bialowieza in the early evening and following a hearty dinner, we met up with our local guide Mateusz Szymura and after hearing the local Thrush Nightingale, we were on our way to nearby Budy. A quick attempt at seeing Red-breasted Flycatcher brought only a couple of Chaffinches and a White Wagtail; presumably the bird had already gone to roost. We had more success though with Eurasian Pygmy Owl as the female showed superbly next to the nest hole for five minutes or so before entering the hole. We left and returned to Bialowieza flushing several roadside Hawfinches en route and a drive around the meadows at the northern end of the village produced two feeding European Bison. It is always a pleasure to see these huge beasts, but even more so when there is sufficient light to see them well. A male Red-backed Shrike and a Meadow Pipit rounded off proceedings for the day. 27 TH MAY 2018 A sunny but cool start on our pre-breakfast walk around the Narewka Bridge and Palace Park part of the village. Tree and House Sparrows, Goldfinches, Common Nuthatches, Common Chiffchaff and Blackcap were joined by a couple of showy Spotted Flycatchers and two singing male Common Rosefinches chasing a female around the canopy. A Thrush Nightingale, Common Cuckoo, Wryneck and Black Woodpecker all called but weren t seen, but we enjoyed excellent views of at least three Great Reed Warblers including one feeding its mate, a male Pied Flycatcher prospecting a nest hole and a really unusually showy Greenish Warbler that sang from much lower down than usual, but as always it proved impossible to film. A Great Spotted Woodpecker flew overhead at speed, as did a few Hawfinches and we rounded things off with very nice views of a couple of Icterine Warblers chasing each other through some birch scrub. Following breakfast, we set off in pursuit of woodpeckers. Our first stop was at Budy and we got lucky here as we enjoyed excellent views of a female White-backed Woodpecker, though the male was only seen briefly, as was a rather dowdy singing Red-breasted Flycatcher, which was constantly on the move through the canopy. We had better luck with our first Collared Flycatcher as a male gave excellent views as it perched on a dead branch in the decaying wet forest, singing occasionally. We also had nice views of a Sedge Warbler that was sunning itself at the top of a dead spruce, a pair of Common Rosefinches with a very bright male, a brief Northern Wren and a pair of Common Nuthatches going back and forth to a nest hole. We had the first of several stunning Poplar Admiral butterflies here too; these large insects were all very fresh, so had presumably emerged only today; fantastic!! We decided to give the adult male Redbreasted Flycatcher that we missed yesterday evening another go and this time we struck gold as it gave fantastic views right over our heads, quite often low down as it sang lustily. We also had nice views of a male Great Spotted Woodpecker and other butterflies here were Map, Green-veined White, Speckled Wood, Brimstone and Small Tortoiseshell. Our next stop was for lunch in Czerlonka, where we had another male Collared Flycatcher, a posing male Red-backed Shrike, a singing Wood Warbler and superb views of a female Three-toed Woodpecker flying into a nest hole deep in the forest. What a gorgeous and confiding bird we could see here panting in the now considerable heat as she poked her head out of the hole occasionally.

A rather loud call at the top of a large tree saw us bag a male Middle Spotted Woodpecker on a prominent branch but it flew just as we were getting the scope on it, and a male Black Redstart gave excellent views as it perched on the roof of a house. We also heard another Black Woodpecker here, along with a European Robin and another Northern Wren. It was a good site for butterflies too, as we added a fiery orange male Large Copper, a very worn Green Hairstreak and a hyper active Heath Fritillary. There were further Poplar Admirals here too. By now it was mid afternoon and really hot with virtually no bird activity, so we headed to the Miejsce Mosy to look at butterflies and were rewarded with a cracking Woodland Brown sat in an oak tree, a Wood White along the railway line where there were numerous Large Skippers, a Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary, a Red Admiral and other unidentified fritillaries that were frustrating us by not landing, along with more Green-veined Whites and Maps. We also heard Common Cuckoo and Garden Warbler and ended with great views of a singing Crested Tit before deciding to take a short break. A couple of the group went for a predinner walk along the railway line that produced a song flighting Barred Warbler, a nice male Hawfinch, a couple of Red-backed Shrikes and a heard only Golden Oriole. It was still hot for our evening trip to the bridge over the Narewka River at the Carska end of the town. As the sun set, it was a beautiful place to be, and we enjoyed watching several Hawfinches flying overhead including one that dive bombed a Eurasian Jay, and another had a go at a male Red-backed Shrike. A pair of Reed Buntings was busy feeding young, a Marsh Warbler showed a couple of times, but never sang, and finally, we heard a River Warbler, but couldn t find it as dusk descended at the end of an action packed day. 28 TH MAY 2018 It was decidedly cool on the pre-breakfast birding at the bridge at the end of the Czar s Lake despite the sunshine. The pick of the birds was a fly over Green Sandpiper, but we also saw a few Greenfinches, several Hawfinches and a singing Icterine Warbler. A pair of Blackcaps showed down to a metre or two, a silent Great Reed Warbler lumbered through the vegetation damp with dew and a Spotted Flycatcher gave the classic view by posing low on a branch over the road, while Beautiful Demoiselles were perched in riparian bushes. Following breakfast, we headed to the meadow at the entrance to the Strict Reserve, where a constantly calling Wryneck gave just brief flight views, while Whinchats and Red-backed Shrikes perched on overhead wires, a singing Common Whitethroat and a Common Blue was added to the butterfly list and we had further views of Poplar Admirals and Small Tortoiseshells. The highlight however was a superb Lesser Spotted Eagle that flew straight at us low overhead before perching in a small willow and surveying us closely before deciding that breakfast was more important and began hunting. Once inside, our guide Arek Szymura gave us a really educational and informative few hours laden with history and botany, as well as showing us a Middle Spotted Woodpecker nest hole where both adults were in attendance, and likewise a Collared Flycatcher hole where both adults once again were present. We saw several other males, at least five Great Spotted Woodpeckers and a splendid male White-backed Woodpecker that was drumming on a dead oak tree at close range, though it was very high up. We watched a few Wood Warblers, one of which went to a nest on the forest floor, heard a singing male Red-breasted Flycatcher, Northern Wrens and the most stubborn Firecrest that refused to show even though it was right above us at one point. We saw our first European Robins, more Common Nuthatches, Song Thrushes, Blackbirds, Hawfinches and a female Blackcap and a Red Squirrel that gave us excellent views before we left. Our next stop was at a Grey-headed Woodpecker hole, and we were treated to fantastic views of the birds and the male in particular as they did a changeover at the nest to end the morning on a real high. Following lunch back at the accommodation, we did a circular walk along the railway line to the second bridge and back via the path along the edge of the marsh and although it was very hot, we had some great birds and butterflies. We began with scope views of mating Blackveined Whites; such a delicately beautiful butterfly and there were good numbers of them today. We also saw our first Small Heaths and many Small Tortoiseshells. It took a while to see any birds other than passing Common Swifts, House Martins and Barn Swallows, but a soaring Lesser Spotted Eagle was nice though it was not as close as this morning s bird! A song flighting Barred Warbler in the same place as last night was brief and not particularly showy, and while we sat in the shade by the river there were large numbers of Banded Demoiselles on the wing, as well as Red-backed Shrikes, Sedge Warblers, Reed Buntings and a Common Chiffchaff.

A Common Snipe was flushed from a roadside ditch, a pair of Lesser Whitethroats flew overhead and a different Barred Warbler gave us amazing views as it song flighted, perched in a willow and then remarkably landed on the timbers of a half built roof and proceeded to run along them and climb up the rafters before flying back out and out of sight!! A final stop after an unsuccessful attempt to get an ice cream [all the shops were closed] saw us back at our pre breakfast stop. Still no Wryneck present, but we got good views of more Hawfinches flying over, a singing Greenfinch, Tree Sparrows and finally a cracking male Eurasian Serin that was initially hopping around on the pavement but then sang from a telegraph wire before joining its mate in a dead tree. That was another really good bird to end the day, as we had already decided not to do an evening excursion today as we have a long day ahead tomorrow. 29 TH MAY 2018 With most of our targets in the forest achieved, we decided to go north to the areas around Siemenowka Reservoir on what was another cloudless blue sky, and today temperatures hit thirty one Celsius by mid afternoon. Our plan was to get to the peat bog at Leszne early so that we could view without heat haze, but upon arrival, it was soon apparent that work was taking place and we were asked to leave shortly after arrival disaster. However, we managed to bag a pair of Little Ringed Plovers, three Common Redshanks, a displaying Black-tailed Godwit, two Common Snipe and five Northern Lapwings before we left. With time now on our hands, we revised the schedule and headed straight to Bachury Fishponds, stopping only for a cracking Wood Lark that was singing from a wire by the side of the road. Upon arrival, we soon found displaying Sedge Warblers, singing Great Reed Warblers, Fieldfares and a female Pied Flycatcher, while singing Garden and Reed Warblers remained unseen. A few Tufted Ducks, Mute Swans, Mallards, Gadwall and a female Common Goldeneye were loafing on the water, a couple of Grey Herons and Great White Egrets gave nice views side by side or in the air together, a few Sand Martins hawked overhead, a Common Chiffchaff and Common Whitethroat sang from telegraph wires and a Common Hoopoe flew the whole length of one of the ponds giving nice views. A single Common Raven flew over and was followed shortly after by a Hooded Crow, a couple of cracking male Marsh Harriers quartered over the bunds, but all of these were eclipsed by three soaring White-tailed Eagles that included a bird carrying off what looked like a large duck in its talons though we didn t see it make the kill. Several Black-headed Gulls, Common and Black Terns gave nice views as they hawked back and forth and at least eight Caspian Gulls were present in a wide range of plumages and we studied them for a while to sort out the identification features which wasn t always easy in the strong light. We also saw our only new butterfly for the tour here in the form of a Sooty Copper. We left happy with what we had seen and headed to Cisowka at the northern end of the reservoir, via an ice cream stop at the shop in Syzmki though our timing could have been better as the local beer delivery lorry turned up and began blasting out loud techno music, so we moved on quickly... We took lunch by the side of the water watching mostly Whiskered Terns dip feeding, their stiff winged flight action a good feature in separating them from the more buoyant Black Terns. We also saw a couple of Common Coot families, a small number of Great Crested Grebes and Great Cormorants, Marsh Harriers doing a food pass involving an unfortunate tern chick and further fly over White-tailed Eagles. We also heard Great Bitterns booming but they were out of sight. After, a very brief stop on the southern side of the lake, where we heard a Corn Crake and saw a couple of Linnets and a lovely family of Blue-headed Wagtails, but not much else, we decided to head back as we really wanted to have a go at finding Ortolan Bunting. En route, we had superb views of a bull European Bison feeding in a meadow at Lesne, so we stopped to take the obligatory photos before heading to an area near Hajnowka, where after hearing a singing male, and getting brief flight views, we managed to get superb views of a male perched up in some dead vegetation. A real contender for bird of the trip as it has been very hard to find any in the traditional Podlaskie hotspots this year. We also had brief views of what was almost certainly a Syrian Woodpecker as we later found out there is a pair in this very spot...unfortunately, we didn t see enough of the bird to clinch it. Our final stop before dinner was back in Bialowieza, where we just about had time to get down to the horse paddock to find the male Citrine Wagtail of a recently established that was gathering food and perching on posts before dropping into the grass to what was probably the nest site. Following a delicious dinner, we headed back out on our last evening here and met up with Mateusz again for a visit to the Great Snipe lek near Narew.

It was wonderfully atmospheric as the sun went down, and we heard several River Warblers, a couple of Grasshopper Warblers and at least four Corn Crakes, and had good views of a Common Cuckoo, a roding Eurasian Woodcock and a couple of Great Grey Shrikes, but alas no snipe; the grass is simply too long in the meadow for them to lek. The way home also proved fruitful as a Polecat ran across the road in front of us and a Red Deer was also seen and a Tawny Owl dropped in front of the vehicle five kilometres along the road from Hajnowka. 30 TH MAY 2018 Today was our transfer day from the forest to the marshes, and with no pre-breakfast walk today, we had breakfast and headed to Hajnowka, where we bought supplies for lunch before heading to the meadows on the edge of the town on what was already a scorcher. We didn t have time to work the whole site, but we soon had the first of five Common Cranes flying overhead and we later had a pair doing a bugling duet; a beautifully atmospheric moment in this wonderful place. We also had very nice views of a Wood Lark on a sandy path in front of us, while a Wryneck once again proved to be highly elusive and we managed only brief flight views as it disappeared into dense vegetation, presumably due to the appearance of a male Red-backed Shrike on its territory. A couple of Common Buzzards and Marsh Harriers circled overhead and the huge female Northern Goshawk that is resident here was seen briefly and was carrying a large prey item; possibly a Brown Hare. We also saw a couple Whinchats, the ubiquitous Yellowhammers and a few Sky Larks. Surprisingly, not many butterflies were flying but, we did get brilliant views of a pair of mating Queen of Spain Fritillaries, which was followed by a red letter moment as we found a resting hairstreak. It was initially thought to be white-lettered but closer inspection of the under wing showed it was in fact a Black Hairstreak which was a life butterfly for everyone and the first of its kind recorded on the site. It may not have been hooching with birds, but it always turns up something of interest; and this was a brilliant moment. A buck Roe Deer fed unseen in a cereal field, five Great White Egrets passed purposefully overhead; undoubtedly migrants as there has only been one previous record and they looked resplendent against the deep blue of the sky, a Corn Bunting posed nicely as it sand and we heard Common Cuckoo in the distance, while also noting several Small Heaths and Small Pearl Bordered Fritillaries. A drive from Chytra to Borek was quieter than hoped for with just a sizeable number of Common Starlings, a couple of Blue-headed Wagtails and a flock of nineteen Common Cranes resting in a field, while Novoberezowo had four Common Ravens. We set off for Dojlidy Fishponds in Bialystok and had a fairly uneventful journey and once lunch was done, we walked the path around the ponds. As always, the Black-headed Gull colony was a hive of activity, and a few Black Terns were also hawking among them gulls. A couple of Great Reed Warblers showed briefly and we had our first sighting of Reed Warblers here. A few Sedge Warblers and an unseen Common Rosefinch also put in half hearted attempts at singing, but the heat was intense and there was little passerine activity. Thankfully, two pairs of gorgeous Red-necked Grebes were seen to keep our interest, as we were wilting in temperatures that had by now reached thirty four Celsius!! One pair were nest building, while the other pair already had a well grown chick...a few Great Bitterns were booming but always remained hidden, a Little Grebe was heard whinnying but was also out of sight, a female Common Goldeneye was among the gulls in the colony, a couple of Common Terns were resting on an island, Great Crested Grebes loafed with nothing in particular to do and we also found a preening drake Garganey among a sizeable flock of Mallards. Next was the journey across Bialystok which was slow and hot, but we made it through and once we were through Tykocin, we spent twenty minutes or so doing some road side birding between Lasy and Slomianka. There was no sign of any Turtle Doves this week, but we made up for it with very nice views of a Tawny Pipit perched on a telegraph wire, as well as a Great Grey Shrike that swooped down and caught something before being chased off by a Barn Swallow, while a few Black Terns were over a distant part of the meadow. Our final stop was the board walk at the Druga Luka reserve and we didn t have to wait too long for our first views of Aquatic Warbler. We saw four birds in total and got some very nice views of singing birds despite the difficult light. We also saw a male Montagu s Harrier, a couple of marsh Harriers, as well as Common Snipe and a few Reed Buntings before heading to the hotel for check in, shower, dinner and a cold, cold beer!!

31 ST MAY 2018 We took the decision to do an early morning visit to the marshes at Osowiec to try and catch up with some target species before it got too hot and this paid off handsomely, as we enjoyed fantastic views of reeling Savi s Warblers, a male Penduline Tit gathering nest material, and a Thrush Nightingale gathering food from the side of the boardwalk. We also had fantastic views of a displaying male White-spotted Bluethroat that was song flighting, perching in dead vegetation occasionally and also making forays to the boardwalk when the nightingale wasn t present. So, we had all four target birds here, and also had nice views of Reed Buntings, Sedge Warblers, a flyover Common Cuckoo, a few Northern Lapwings, three distant Great White Egrets, a male Marsh Harrier and a very brief Garden Warbler. Following a very good breakfast, we headed to Kynzyn Fishponds, arriving mid morning on another blisteringly hot day, though there was a pleasant breeze unlike yesterday, having seen a Common Hoopoe en route. The prospects didn t look great on the first pond as the water levels had been subject to a big increase, but there were still a few shorebirds present. Pick of the bunch was the first of two Black-tailed Godwits seen today, while at least three Wood Sandpipers gave excellent views as they fed on islands that were also occupied by sitting Common Terns. The next pond had lower levels and some mud and consequently more birds; most of which were Northern Lapwings with an estimate of at least thirty birds. A couple of pairs of Little Ringed Plovers were constantly displaying, a drake Tufted Duck was on the water and a Marsh Warbler gave excellent views as it sang from some cow parsley before dropping out of sight. The next pond had a nice mix of mud and water and held the most birds with a Green Sandpiper being observed right next to a Wood Sandpiper for excellent comparison opportunities, two Common Greenshanks were in the deeper water, a couple of Reeves fed distantly and we spent a considerable amount of time watching two breeding plumaged Little Stints. Not a familiar plumage to a lot of UK birders, the rufous wash to the upperparts and clean white underparts contrasted beautifully in the superb light and we could also make out the black legs and short black bill and a hint of tramlines down the mantle. As we were watching these, a full breeding plumaged Dunlin with complete black belly walked through where the scope was pointed. Four Caspian Gulls dropped in and while watching these we found a roosting drake Garganey alongside a drake Common Teal and a lone Whooper Swan allowed a reasonably close approach before flying off to another pond. A hunting raptor caught our eye and this was an unexpected bonus bird in the form of a ringtail Hen Harrier, and this bird was later seen being harassed by a male Montagu s Harrier which we found sat on a grassy bank after the other harrier had moved off. A Grey Plover was feeding on a small island, but this bird showed little sign of summer dress, and a few Northern Shovelers and Great Crested Grebes were seen, while a Little Grebe was heard whinnying and a single Black Tern flew through. A Common Hoopoe low over the water was a surprise and as we were leaving an adult White-tailed Eagle sailed overhead. Following an al fresco lunch and delicious ice cream in Tykocin, we drove the short distance to the sand quarry on the out skirts of town and didn t have to wait long at all before we had three European Bee-eaters flying around overhead after initially being found on a telegraph wire. The birds gave a great display and we had one sat in a tree at one point while it devoured a bee; such stunning birds. Several Sand Martins were visiting nest holes and we heard a Grey Partridge calling and a purring Eurasian Turtle Dove but although the quarry wasn t active today, we felt it better not to proceed past the warning signs. Our final stop was at Wolka near Goniadz, but the only raptors we saw were single Marsh Harrier and Common Buzzard and not the eagles we were hoping for. We did get excellent views of several Blueheaded Wagtails feeding in a newly cut meadow, as well as several White Storks, and a couple of Linnets and Fieldfares but not much else, so we decided to spend some time chilling out back at the hotel at the end of a really enjoyable and relaxed day. 1 ST JUNE 2018 We met with our local guide Adam for our final day of birding and headed straight to the southern basin of the Biebrza Marshes at Msischy. Once again the sky was cloudless, but with more of a breeze, it felt just a little bit more comfortable than on previous days. Before we left, we had an adult White-tailed Eagle soaring over the National Park Headquarters in Osowiec, and we saw a few Eurasian Jays, a couple of Mistle Thrushes and other common species.

Upon arrival, we were met with a raptor low overhead and this bird immediately began to pose questions. The all dark plumage was good for Greater Spotted Eagle, but the five primaries indicated Lesser Spotted Eagle, and after much deliberation, we concluded that it must have been a hybrid; disappointing but almost certainly the right conclusion. A further three White-tailed Eagles were seen here, along with a few Marsh Harriers and a couple of Common Buzzards, while a party of twenty nine White Storks were loafing around the tower, along with two Great White Egrets and we had three Common Cranes in total. It was quite amazing to see just one Whiskered Tern here, as it is usually one of the better sites for marsh terns, but with so little water perhaps it wasn t so surprising. There was just one Common Redshank too, though Northern Lapwings reached double figures and there were plenty of displaying Sedge Warblers and we also saw our first Willow Warbler of the trip. Other new additions to the trip list were a Common Moorhen with three chicks and several Greylag Geese, and we had brief but very acceptable views of a pair of Citrine Wagtails as they flew past us before landing deep in the marsh, and a Black Stork that soared overhead in excellent light, allowing us to see the plumage details very well despite the height the bird was at. The only butterfly of note was a Red Admiral. We moved on to Brzostowo, where we enjoyed lunch alongside the Biebrza River, and thankfully, there were some terns here. Mostly Black Terns, but at least three White-winged Black Terns and a couple of Whiskered Terns, as well as a Little Tern and a few Common Terns, which all gave fantastic views as we sat quietly and let them come to us with them only being ten metres away at times. We also had brief but very acceptable flight views of another Black Stork, while a few Black-tailed Godwits, Common Redshanks, Little Ringed Plovers and Northern Lapwings provided the shorebird interest. By now it was mid afternoon and hot again, so we headed for Pulwy Marshes, but other than for a few Black Terns, Grey Herons, Blue-headed Wagtails, a very distant drake Garganey and an amazing Noctule Bat that dive bombed the car a couple of times as we got out, there was little to see, so we decided to try the sandy heath near Piaski for Large Blue butterfly and perhaps a Eurasian Turtle Dove. We had no joy with either but we did get at least three Tawny Pipits, another Willow Warbler and a singing Corn Bunting, while butterflies included Chestnut and Pearly Heaths, Comma, Black-veined White, Dark Green, Glanville and Assman s Fritillaries and a Large Copper to round off another excellent day. 2 ND JUNE 2018 We took a later breakfast in readiness for the journey to the airport but were somewhat surprised to see it had been raining. It made no real difference to our day as we had no time for birding other than from the road and this brought just a few common species as well as White Storks, Hooded Crows, Common Buzzards and a Common Kestrel before we arrived early at Modlin where we said our farewells at the end of a really enjoyable week.
