NP National Park * - Heard only birds Tinamous - Tinamidae *Brown Tinamou (Crypturellus obsoletus): Heard along mid-satipo Road Nov 6 th. Ornate Tinamou (Nothoprocta ornata): One flushed from puna grasslands en route to Jauja Oct 31 st, good looks of one at Lago Junin Nov 1 st and another observed near Junin Nov 4 th. Ducks - Anatidae Andean Goose (Chloephaga melanoptera): Fairly common in the high puna wetlands of upper Santa Eulalia, Ticlio bog, and the Lago Junin area. At Lago Junin 300 were estimated Nov 1 st. Crested Duck (Lophonetta specularioides): About 40 estimated at en route to Ticlio Bog Oct 31 st and 50 at Lago Junin the following day. 2

3 Crested Duck, Ticlio Pass Torrent Duck (Merganetta armata): A distant pair was observed from the Inca-Finch spot west of Huanuco Nov 3 rd and another pair observed at mid-satipo Road Nov 8 th. Cinnamon Teal (Anas cyanoptera): Ten were at Pantanos de Villa Oct 28 th and the same number at Jauja No 11th. White-cheeked Pintail (Anas bahamensis): Good looks of 15 at Pantanos de Villa on Oct 38 th. Yellow-billed Pintail (Anas georgica): Four seen at Lago Junin on Nov 1 st and 10 observed at Jauja on Nov 11th. Puna Teal (Anas puna): About 20 seen at Lago Junin Nov 1 st and 4 th, and over 100 at Jauja Nov 11 th. Yellow-billed (Speckled) Teal (Anas flavirostris): A few at upper Santa Eulalia valley Oct 30th, about 20 en route to Ticlio Bog Oct 31 st and common at Lago Junin Nov 1st: 100 s observed along the drying shores of Lago Junin. Around 75 were seen at Jauja Nov 11 th. Ruddy (Andean) Duck (Oxyura (ferruginea) jamaicensis): Six of the southern black-headed race of Ruddy Duck was observed at Pantanos de Villa Oct 28 th and 200 at Jauja Nov 11 th. Some consider the Andean race to be a separate species. Guans - Cracidae 3

4 Speckled Chachalaca (Ortalis guttata): Seven were at the San Ramon lodge grounds Oct 5 th and 10 seen the following day at lower Satipo Road. Andean Guan (Penelope montagnii): One observed mid-satipo Road Nov 7 th and another on Nov 9 th. Grebes - Podicipedidae White-tufted Grebe (Rollandia rolland): Four were seen at Lago Junin on Nov 1 st and five on Nov 4 th ; another two were at Jauja Nov 11 th. Pied-billed Grebe (Podilymbus podiceps): Five observed at the Pantanos de Villa wetlands on Oct 28th. Great Grebe (Podiceps major): Eight of this elegant grebe were observed at Pantanos de Villa wetlands Oct 28th, most still in alternate plumage. Flamingos - Phoenicopteridae Chilean Flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis) Near-threatened: Approximately 250 estimated at Lago Junin Nov 1 st and 50 on Nov 4 th. Penguins - Spheniscidae Humboldt Penguin (Spheniscus humboldti) Vulnerable: A few of these penguins were observed off of San Pedro Oct 27 th. Diving-Petrels - Pelecanoididae Peruvian Diving-Petrel (Pelecanoides garnoti) Endangered: One observed off of Lima Oct 28 th. Boobies - Sulidae Peruvian Booby (Sula variegata): Common along the coast hundreds observed offshore along Lima s coast Oct 28 th. Cormorants - Phalacrocoracidae Neotropic Cormorant (Phalacrocorax brasilianus): Common along the coast: 100 s at Pantanos de Villa. Red-legged Cormorant (Phalacrocorax gaimardi) Near-threatened: Six of this striking cormorant was seen off Lima s coast Oct 28 th. Guanay Cormorant (Phalacrocorax bougainvillii) Near-threatened: About 20 seen offshore along Lima coast Oct 28 th. Pelicans - Pelecanidae Peruvian Pelican (Pelecanus thagus) Near-threatened: Common along the coast. 4

5 Herons - Ardeidae Fasciated Tiger-Heron (Tigrisoma fasciatum): One was observed on a riverbed en route to Satipo Nov 5 th. Great Egret (Ardea alba): Two at Pantanos de Villa Oct 28 th, one at Lago Junin on Nov 4 th, 15 roosting along the river near Satipo the following day and one at Jauja Nov 11th. Snowy Egret (Egretta thula): Fifteen at Pantanos de Villa on Oct 28 th and five at Jauja Nov 11 th. Little Blue Heron (Egretta caerulea): Twenty observed at Pantanos de Villa Oct 28th. Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis): A single at Pantanos de Villa Oct 28 th, two near Jauja Oct 31 st and two at Lago Junin Nov 1 st and 4 th. Black-crowned Night-Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax): Approximately 20 were at Pantanos de Villa Oct 28th; two were in upper Santa Eulalia valley Oct 30 th and four seen at a lake en route to Ticlio Bog Oct 31 st. Ibises - Threskiornithidae Puna Ibis (Plegadis ridgwayi): A few at Pantanos de Villa Oct 28 th and at upper Santa Eulalia/Ticlio Oct st. A high of 300 were in the puna grasslands at Lago Junin Nov 1 st and hundreds seen Nov 4th. Twenty at Jauja Nov 11 th. New World Vultures - Cathartidae Black Vulture (Coragyps atratus): Common on the coast Oct 28 th and Nov 11 th, and five in the Satipo area Nov 5 th. Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura): About 30 seen in the Satipo area Nov 5 th. Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus) Near-threatened: Two seen at the gorge area, Santa Eulalia valley Oct 29 th and five others were observed the following day further up the valley including the Polylepis patch. Hawks - Accipitridae Pearl Kite (Gampsonyx swainsonii): One perched on a wire outside Satipo Nov 5 th. 5

6 Pearl Kite, Satipo Road Swallow-tailed Kite (Elanoides forficatus): Four at the Carpish trail on Nov 2nd, and one at San Ramon Nov 5 th. Plumbeous Kite (Ictinia plumbea): Around 20 at San Ramon area Nov 5 th, and five seen at lower Satipo Road Nov 6 th. Solitary Eagle (Buteogallus solitarius) Near-threatened: One soaring adult observed at a distance mid Satipo Road Nov 6 th. Roadside Hawk (Rupornis magnirostris): A couple was seen each day at San Ramon and Satipo Road Nov 5 th to 9 th. Harris s Hawk (Parabuteo unicinctus): Eight were present at the Pantanos de Villa marsh on Oct 30th. White-rumped Hawk (Parabuteo leucorrhous) Good looks of an adult soaring at Carpish Pass Nov 2 nd. Variable Hawk (Geranoaetus polyosoma): A few of these buteos were observed of both races at upper Santa Eulalia valley, Jauja area, and Lago Junin area. Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle (Geranoaetus melanoleucus): Four were observed in the Santa Eulalia valley, Oct 29th. White-throated Hawk (Buteo albigula): One observed soaring at Carpish Pass Nov 2 nd. Rails - Rallidae 6

7 Plumbeous Rail (Pardirallus sanguinolentus): Heard at Pantanos de Villa Oct 28th and Lago Junin Nov 4 th. Two observed at Lago Junin Nov 1 st. Common Gallinule (Gallinula galeata): About 10 seen at Pantanos de Villa Oct 28 th and the same number at Lago Junin Nov 1st. Giant Coot (Fulica gigantea): Two seen at a small pond near Ticlio Pass Oct 31 st. Slate-colored (Andean) Coot (Fulica ardesiaca): Common at coastal and altiplano marshes. Hundreds at Lago Junin Nov 1 st and 4 th and 200 estimated at Jauja Nov 11 th. Avocets - Recurvirostridae Black-necked Stilt (Himantopus mexicanus mexicanus): Fifteen were at the ponds by the beach at Pantanos de Villa on Oct 28th. Oystercatchers - Haematopodidae American Oystercatcher (Haematopus palliatus): Eight were at the beach at Pantanos de Villa on the Oct 28 th. Blackish Oystercatcher (Haematopus ater): Three on the rocks along the coast south of Lima Oct 28 th. Plovers - Charadriidae Andean Lapwing (Vanellus resplendens): Common in the altiplano: five were at Ticlio Bog on the Oct 31st, over 20 were in the grasslands surrounding Lago Junin on the Nov 1 st, and eight Nov 4th. Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus): Two at San Pedro on Oct 27 th. Sandpipers - Scolopacidae Spotted Sandpiper (Actitis macularius): Two were at Pantanos de Villa on Oct 28th, and two were seen by PJ along the river near San Ramon Nov 5th. Greater Yellowlegs (Tringa melanoleuca): Singles were at Pantanos de Villa Oct 28 th, Lago Junin on Nov 4 th and Jauja Nov 11th. Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus): A hundred were at the beach at Pantanos de Villa on Oct 28th. Ruddy Turnstone (Arenaria interpres): Two were at Pantanos de Villa Oct 28 th. Baird s Sandpiper (Calidris bairdii): Two seen in fields near Junin Nov 1 st. Semipalmated Sandpiper (Calidris pusilla): A single was at the edge of the beach pond at Pantanos de Villa Oct 28th. Puna Snipe (Gallinago andina): One was flushed from Ticlio Bog area by PJ Oct 31 st. 7

8 Wilson s Phalarope (Phalaropus tricolor): About eight were seen at pools at San Pedro on Oct 27 th. Gulls - Laridae Andean Gull (Chroicocephalus serranus): Fairly common at high Andean lakes and marshes. Gray-hooded Gull (Chroicocephalus cirrocephalus): About 30 seen around Pantanos de Villa Oct 28th including immature and breeding plumaged birds. Gray Gull (Leucophaeus modestus): About 10 mostly immatures observed with other gulls at the beach area, Pantanos de Villa Oct 28 th. Franklin s Gull (Leucophaeus pipixcan): Common along the coast: about 50 at Pantanos de Villa Oct 28 th. Belcher s (Band-tailed) Gull (Larus belcheri): Common along the coast. Kelp Gull (Larus dominicanus): A few immatures were observed with Band-tailed Gulls at Pantanos de Villa beach ponds on Oct 28 th. Inca Tern (Larosterna inca) Near-threatened: Common offshore with 40 seen along Lima south coast Oct 28 th. Black Tern (Chlidonias niger): One winter plumaged individual observed off the beach Pantanos de Villa Oct 28 th. South American Tern (Sterna hirundinacea): Three adults were flying past Pantanos de Villa beach Oct 28 th. Pigeons - Columbidae Rock Pigeon (Columba livia) Introduced: Common and widespread in towns and villages. Spot-winged Pigeon (Patagioenas maculosa): Small numbers (10-30) observed daily at Santa Eulalia valley and Tarma Oct 29-Nov 1 st. Band-tailed Pigeon (Patagioenas fasciata): Three observed in flight along the Carpish trail Nov 2nd and fairly common at upper Satipo Rod with more than 50 seen Nov 8-9 th. Plumbeous Pigeon (Patagioenas plumbea): Good looks of one perched at the side of the road Satipo Road Oct 6 th. Plain-breasted Ground-Dove (Columbina minuta): Two observed in flight along the river west of Huanuco on Nov 3rd. Ruddy Ground-Dove (Columbina talpacoti): One seen on the grounds of our lodge in San Ramon Nov 5 th. 8

9 Croaking Ground-Dove (Columbina cruziana): Three observed in the lower Santa Eulalia valley on Oct 28 th ; fairly common in mid Santa Eulalia valley with 10 Oct 29 th, and a few the following day. Bare-faced Ground-Dove (Metriopelia ceciliae): Two observed in the upper Santa Eulalia valley Oct 29 th. Black-winged Ground-Dove (Metriopelia melanoptera): Twenty seen in the upper Santa Eulalia valley Oct 29 th and 30 th, and Lago Junin Nov 4 th. A pair was seen at Junin Nov 1 st. White-tipped Dove (Leptotila verreauxi): One was flushed from the road while driving up the Santa Eulalia valley on Oct 29th and another was seen at San Ramon Nov 5 th. West Peruvian Dove (Zenaida meloda): Common and widespread along the coast. Eared Dove (Zenaida auriculata): Common and widespread along the coast, around Hacienda Santa Cruz and in the fields at upper Mantaro Road Nov 8th. Cuckoos - Cuculidae Squirrel Cuckoo (Piaya cayana): Two observed at San Ramon Nov 5 th and another at lower Satipo Road Nov 6 th. Smooth-billed Ani (Crotophaga ani): Fifteen observed en route to Satipo Nov 5 th and a few were seen lower Satipo Road Nov 6-7 th. Groove-billed Ani (Crotophaga sulcirostris): Five at Pantanos de Villa Oct 28 th and a few at Hacienda Santa Cruz Nov 2-3 rd. Owls - Strigidae Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus): One observed roosting in a eucalyptus above the gorge Santa Eulalia valley Oct 29 th and another in the garden of La Florida Nov 1 st. Peruvian Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium peruanum): Two observed at including scope looks at Santa Eulalia valley on Oct 30th. Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia): Two observed en route to Ticlio via Jauja Nov 1 st. Nightjars - Caprimulgidae Sand-colored Nighthawk (Chordeiles rupestris): Nice looks of this beautifully patterned nightjar were had at Satipo: A loose flock of 40 was observed foraging over fields outside Satipo, on the evening of Nov 5 th. *Band-winged Nightjar (Systellura longirostris): One heard at the grounds of Hacienda Santa Cruz Nov 2 nd by TP. Swifts - Apodidae 9

10 Chestnut-collared Swift (Streptoprocne rutila): About 10 along the river en route La Quinua Nov 3 rd, 20 at lower Satipo Road Nov 6 th, five at upper Mantaro valley Nov 8 th and 10 at upper Satipo Nov 9 th. White-collared Swift (Streptoprocne zonaris): Forty along the river en route to La Quinua Nov 8 th, 75 at San Ramon Nov 5 th and a single at upper Mantaro valley Nov 8 th. Andean Swift (Aeronautes andecolus): Ten observed at the gorge/bridge area Oct 29 th and 30 at upper Santa Eulalia valley on Oct 30th. Fork-tailed Palm-Swift (Tachornis squamata): Two were seen in fields near Satipo by PJ Nov 5 th. Hummingbirds - Trochilidae Green Hermit (Phaethornis guy): One observed mid Satipo Road Nov 6 th, and another seen higher by PJ, AG on Nov 8 th. Sparkling Violetear (Colibri coruscans): Four seen along mid Satipo Road Nov 6 th. Amethyst-throated Sunangel (Heliangelus amethysticollis): Two along the Carpish trail Nov 2 nd and one Nov 3 rd ; one at mid Satipo Road Nov 7 th and upper Nov 10 th. Speckled Hummingbird (Adelomyia melanogenys): One at mid Satipo Road Nov 6 th and another higher up slope on Nov 8 th. Long-tailed Sylph (Aglaiocercus kingii): One seen as a fly-by at Carpish pass Nov 2 nd ; and TP and LK had great looks beside the road near the lodge at Calabaza Nov 9 Bronze-tailed Comet (Polyonymus caroli) ENDEMIC: Good looks were obtained in the Santa Eulalia valley on Oct 29th with two seen. Andean Hillstar (Oreotrochilus estella): One perched bird observed briefly at La Quinua Nov 4 th. Black-breasted Hillstar (Oreotrochilus melanogastor) ENDEMIC: One at upper Santa Eulalia valley Oct 30 th, another in puna grasslands en route to Jauja Oct 31 st, and a female at Lago Junin Nov 1 st. Green-tailed Trainbearer (Lesbia nuna): Two were seen at Hacienda La Florida Oct 31 st and four Nov 1 st. Tyrian Metaltail (Metallura tyrianthina): One female was identified as this species above the gorge Santa Eulalia Oct 30 th ; five were at Carpish Pass Nov 2 nd and two Nov 3 rd ; two others seen at upper Satipo Road Nov 10 th. 10

11 Tyrian Metaltail female, Satipo Road Fire-throated Metaltail (Metallura eupogon) ENDEMIC: One observed in the elfin forest at upper Mantaro valley Nov 8 th. Black Metaltail (Metallura phoebe) ENDEMIC: Three were seen at the polylepis forest at upper Santa Eulalia valley Oct 30 th, and two at La Florida Oct 31 st and Nov 1 st. Sapphire-vented Puffleg (Eriocnemis luciani): One observed perched at upper Mantaro valley Nov 8 th. Shining Sunbeam (Aglaeactis cupripennis): Around 10 seen at the montane scrub of the upper Mantaro valley Nov 8 th. Collared Inca (Coeligena torquata): Four observed at Carpish Pass Nov 3 rd and three on Nov 9-10 th at upper Satipo Road. Violet-throated Starfrontlet (Coeligena violifer): Eight along the Carpish Pass trails Nov 2 rd and three on Nov 3 rd. Two were seen at mid Satipo Road Nov 7 th and at upper Satipo Road Nov 10 th. Mountain Velvetbreast (Lafresnaya lafresnayi): Singles observed at Carpish Pass Nov 2-3 rd. Sword-billed Hummingbird (Ensifera ensifera): PJ observed one flying by at upper Satipo Road Nov 9th. Great Sapphirewing (Pterophanes cyanopterus): One observed at upper Satipo Road Nov 7 th. 11

12 Booted Racket-tail (Ochreatus underwoodii): One female observed by LK at mid Satipo Road Nov 6 th. Giant Hummingbird (Patagona gigas): Observed in upper Santa Eulalia Valley on Oct th ; and a few daily in the gardens of Hacienda La Florida Oct 31 st and Nov 1 st. Purple-collared Woodstar (Myrtis fanny): Three female-type birds observed at Santa Eulalia valley Oct 29 th and four on Oct 30 th. Oasis Hummingbird (Rhodopsis vesper): One of these largish hummers was observed at lower Santa Eulalia valley Oct 29 th. Peruvian Sheartail (Thaumastura cora): One female observed at Santa Eulalia Valley on Oct 29th. White-bellied Woodstar (Chaetocercus mulsant): One observed along the river west of Huanuco Nov 3 rd. Amethyst Woodstar (Calliphlox amethystina): One female observed and photographed mid Satipo Road Nov 6 th. Grey-breasted Sabrewing (Campylopterus largipennis): One observed perched along mid- Satipo Road Nov 6 th. White-bellied Hummingbird (Amazilia chionogaster): One observed on the grounds of Hacienda Santa Cruz Nov 2 nd and another along the river west of Huanuco Nov 3 rd. One was seen and photographed by TP at mid Satipo Road Nov 6 th. Amazilia Hummingbird (Amazilia amazilia): Three were seen at the grounds of Santa Eulalia Gardens Nov 29 th. Trogons - Trogonidae Golden-headed Quetzal (Pharomachrus auriceps): Great views of one perched in trees close to the road mid Satipo Road Nov 6 th and another higher up the valley Nov 9 th. 12

14 Puffbirds - Bucconidae Rufous-capped Nunlet (Nonnula ruficapilla): One observed by TP along the trail behind the lodge at San Antonio. Jacamars - Galbulidae Bluish-fronted Jacamar (Galbula cyanescens): One observed perched along lower Satipo Road Nov 6 th and another was seen by PJ, AG on the trail behind the lodge the following day. New World Barbets - Capitonidae *Gilded Barbet (Capito auratus): Heard along mid Satipo Road Nov 7 and 9 th. Versicolored Barbet (Eubucco versicolor): Singles observed in bird flocks along Satipo Road Nov 6-8 th. Toucans - Ramphastidae Emerald Toucanet (Aulacorhynchus prasinus): One seen at San Ramon Nov 5 th, four at the lower sections of Satipo Road Nov 6 th and a single higher up on Nov 8 th. Chestnut-tipped Toucanet (Aulacorhynchus derbianus): Singles seen along Satipo Road Nov 6-8 th. Blue-banded Toucanet (Aulacorhynchus coeruleicinctuis): One seen along Satipo Road Nov 6 th, and two Nov 8-9 th. 14

Woodpeckers Picidae Ocellated Piculet (Picumnus dorbignyanus): Three observed in bird flocks lower Satipo Road Nov 6 th. Little Woodpecker (Veniliornis passerinus): One observed at San Ramon Nov 5 th. Falcons - Falconidae Black Caracara (Daptrius ater): Three observed perched on and with cows along lower Satipo Road Nov 6 th. Red-throated Caracara (Ibycter americanus): A group of six was observed in trees by the highway outside Satipo Nov 5 th. Mountain Caracara (Phalcoboenus megalopterus): Fairly common in the altiplano with one or two observed at upper Santa Eulalia valley, Ticlio Bog and Lago Junin area Oct 30 th -Nov 1 st and Nov 4 th. Hooded Mountain Tanager (Buthraupis montana): Five observed along the Carpish Trail Nov 2 nd and two on the 3rd; and another couple observed at upper Satipo Road Nov 7 th. Hooded Mountain-Tanager, Satipo Road Grass-green Tanager (Chloronis riefferii): A few of this great tanager were seen in bird flocks in the highlands: One in a bird flock along the Carpish Tunnel trail Nov 2 nd, and singles along the Satipo Road Nov 7 th and 8 th. Lacrimose Mountain-Tanager (Anisognathus lacrymosus): Two seen along at the Carpish trail Nov 2 nd and eight Nov 3 rd ; three seen at upper Satipo Road Nov 7 th and two Nov 8 th and 9 th. Scarlet-bellied Mountain-Tanager (Anisognathus igniventris): This stunning bird was fairly common at upper Satipo Road with 10 seen Nov 7 th and 8 th, and six on Nov 10 th. Buff-breasted Mountain Tanager (Dubusia taeniata): One observed in a bird flock at upper Satipo Road Nov 9 th and two on the 10 th. Chestnut-bellied Mountain Tanager (Dubusia castaneoventris): Two were at the Carpish Tunnel area on Nov 2 nd. Yellow-throated Tanager (Irodosornis analis): Three observed low in the shrubs along Satipo Road Nov 8 th and two seen the 9 th. 34

Yellow-scarfed Tanager (Iridosornis reinhardti) ENDEMIC: Another pretty tanager of cloud forest with two along the Carpish Tunnel trail Nov 2nd and six on the 3 rd. Fawn-breasted Tanager (Pipraeidea melanonota): One seen by PJ at Carpish Pass Nov 2 nd. Blue-and-Yellow Tanager (Thraupis bonariensis): Fairly common in the Santa Eulalia valley and on the grounds of Hacienda La Florida, outside Tarma. Several were seen daily Oct 29 th to Nov 1st. Three en route to La Quinua Nov 4 th. Orange-eared Tanager (Chlorochrysa calliparaea): One observed by TP along Satipo Road Nov 6 th. Blue-grey Tanager (Thraupis episcopus): Two observed at lower Santa Eulalia Road, five at Hacienda Santa Cruz, Huanuco; and fairly common along Satipo Road Nov 5-8 th the Lima area Oct 30 th and four were at Hacienda Santa Cruz Nov 3 rd. Common in the Tingo Maria area. Palm Tanager (Thraupis palmarum): Over 10 seen in the San Ramon area. Blue-capped Tanager (Thraupis cyanocephala): Eight along the Carpish trail Nov 2nd and three on Nov 3 rd ; fairly common along Satipo Road Nov 7-10 th with a high of 20 seen on Nov 9th. Blue-capped Tanager, Satipo Road Golden-naped Tanager (Tangara ruficervix): Two observed in a bird flock along Satipo Road Nov 6 th. 35

Swallow Tanager (Tersina viridis): Eight in the Satipo area Nov 5 th and 10 the following day. Cinereous Conebill (Conirostrum cinereum): Three at the Santa Eulalia valley on Oct 29 th and two on Oct 30 th ; 10 on the grounds of Hacienda La Florida Oct 31st, and five Nov 1 st ; one at upper Satipo Road Nov 8 th. Blue-backed Conebill (Conirostrum sitticolor): Ten observed at upper Satipo Road Nov 9 th. 36
